Tampoco ha contado con mucha tradición en la discusión teórica taxonómica; sobre cómo, por qué y en qué han de basarse y conformarse las ordenaciones y el estudio del registro arqueológico. Todavía hoy la mayor parte de la labor de clasificación arqueológica sigue desarrollándose de forma parcial, obviándose algunas escuelas taxonómicas y principios esenciales para toda ciencia histórica en la que el propio cambio es un factor fundamental. Este libro explica detenidamente por qué y cómo la teoría de la evolución darwiniana constituye un marco filosófico y metodológico de gran relevancia y enorme potencial, no sólo en el camo de la biología, sino también en el de las ciencias sociales, como en la antropología y, particularmente aquí, en la arqueología. Desglosa pormenorizadamente cómo los parámetros darquinianos son eficaces para el estudio de la transmisión de información social y del cambio cultural en la poblaciones humanas del pasado y del presente, e introduce al lector humanista en un panorama de reflexión totalmente novedoso de cara al desarrollo metodológico y al estudio sistemático de la variación y diversidad culturales. La propuesta metodológica principal que desarrola la obra es la aplicación de la filogenética, especialmente de la cladística , a los conjuntos de rasgos que conforman los sistemas culturales de las poblaciones humanas, ya sean aquellos de naturaleza material (objetos y utensilios, estructuras del registro arqueológico, etc.) u otros de índole más intangible (lenguajes, sistemas simbólicos, religiones, etc.) Dicha metodología, que engloba técnicas eficaces para secuenciar y ordenar datos arquelógicos y antropológicos al amparo de las leyes del parentesco, no sólo permite clasificar y reconstruir la evolución de estos conjuntos y sistemas culturales (como por ejemplo la de una determinada tecnología), sino también proponer hipótesis contrastables sobre el dónde, el cuándo, el cómo y, lo más importante, el porqué de sus cambios fundamentales. Posiblemente se trate de una de las herramientas de investigación con más potencial hoy en día en el campo de la antropología.
