Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personality in Literature Mr. Balfour does, indeed, make a proper distino tion between art as technical dexterity and art as related to the sublime, the beautiful, the pathetic, the humorous, the melodious, and admits that 'it is possible to apply an objective test to technical skill - to decide that this line scans, that this 'rhyme is flawless, that these bars in music are in such-and-such a key. But he will allow no objective grounds of excellence to art in the more important sense. If you say that this poem is beautiful or sublime, you are asserting what is only true for you, a mere personal preference which others need not be expected to share. Not only do men of trained sensibility differ from the uncultured, but they differ equally from one another. He cites the evidence of Greek music to show how widely the cultured of one nation and epoch may differ from the cultured of other nations and epochs. Having laid it down as an axiom that our aesthetic judgments are for the most part immediate, and, so to speak, intuitive, and observing that the fastidious differ among themselves, and that their delight in fine objects is no more intense than the delight of the vulgar in coarser themes, he proceeds to the con elusion that there can be no valid right or wrong in taste, no absolute standard of beauty. He even maintains that art is not based upon any special faculty for perceiving the true. I can find no justification in experience for associating great art with penetrating insight. It was seen, however, that this would make a volume altogether too long, and the plan of a two-volume book was for a time entertained. Finally it was decided to give each work a separate title, since they so greatly differ in style and subject matter, and since purchasers would then be enabled to order them singly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Personality of Thoreau True, Lowell, who printed this anonymously in 1848, left the two Concord names blank; but those who read what the younger friends of Emerson had then published - Channing two volumes of verse and some prose in the Dial, and Thoreau his Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers in part, in the Dial, with other papers, a few original verses, and some translations from the Greek - could not doubt for whom these shafts of satire were meant. The points of resemblance between the written style of Charming or of Thoreau and that of Emer son, whether in verse or prose, were very few; but a like-mindedness existed among the three, and careless or prejudiced observers, like young Russell Lowell, fancied resemblances and bor rowings where none could afterwards be seen. Even so did others fancy a resemblance between Emerson and Carlyle, which Lowell, in the same. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Culture of Personality The decay of the outworn forms Of religious belief does not signify spiri tual decay, as so many timorous folk would have us believe. On the con trary, it is a sign of spiritual renais sance, of increased vigor Of religious vitality, too potent to be longer con fined in the Old formulae and so, forced to overflow into the larger moulds Of science and philosophy, of literature and art, thus tending to spiritualize the general consciousness of men as, through purely ecclesiastical channels, it has never been able to do. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Idea of Personality If the philosophy of life, built upon the recent biologi cal and sociological premises, has been unsatisfactory, this has been due to an apparent unwillingness to take the time required to distinguish what is of permanent value from what is simply the exaggeration of controversy, in the anxiety to establish a theory. It is conceivable that men should wish, under the impulse of fresh evidence, to re-ex amine their notions of God, the nature of human progress, society, and free-will; but it is not conceivable that conclu sions, reached so rapidly and with so little discrimination between fact and hypothesis, should be always accurate and should really reflect life's problems and complexities. For either he is going round and round from savagery to civilisation and back again to savagery, as is conceived by the discoverer of Penguin Island, or he is moving upward in ages that are but repetitions on a higher level of older and simpler forms of life, or he is advancing onward in stages that can best be shown by lines, though these may be straight or curved according to individual fancy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Personality Man's interest in character is founded on an intensely practical need. In whatsoever relationship we deal with our fellows, we base our intercourse largely on our understanding of their characters. The trader asks concerning his customer, "Is he honest?" and the teacher asks about the pupil, "Is he earnest?" The friend bases his friendship on his good opinion of his friend; the foe seeks to know the weak points in the hated one's make-up; and the maiden yearning for her lover whispers to herself, "Is he true?" Upon our success in reading the character of others, upon our understanding of ourselves hangs a good deal of our life's success or failure. Because the feelings are in part mirrored on the face and body, the experience of mankind has become crystallized in beliefs, opinions and systems of character reading which are based on physiognomy, shape of head, lines of hand, gait and even the method of dress and the handwriting. Some of these all men believe in, at least in part. For example, every one judges character to a certain extent by facial expression, manner, carriage and dress. Binet's has already rendered service in the original, both in the way which he indicates in his preface - as a resume of results in the very interesting field which it covers - and also as a handbook of the topic for the general reader. In this latter capacity it is eminently suited to its place in this series. It should have a wide reading by educated persons who are not psychologists, but who yet wish to know the sort of experiments the psychologists and medical men are making in this extraordinary department of investigation. M. Binet, who is now Director of the Laboratory for Physiological Psychology at the Sorbonne, Paris, is already so well known to readers of English that it would be quite out of place to speak either of his scientific position or of his power of popular statement except in reference to this particular book, now for the first time made accessible in English. The work appeared in France in 1891, and was at once welcomed as an authoritative statement of the best results by one of the investigators who had done much to discover them.
