Book excerpt: The following Diary covering the interesting period of the Civil War from January 1, to December 31, 1864, and a portion of 1865 to the surrender of General R. E. Lee at Appomattox Court House, Va., was kept by the Author at the age of twenty-two when an officer of the Tenth Regiment Vermont Volunteer Infantry, Third and First Brigade, Third Division, Third and Sixth Corps respectively, Army of the Potomac, and is a brief war history as seen by a young soldier literally from the front line of battle during General U. S. Grant's celebrated campaign from the Rapidan River to Petersburg, Va., and Gen. P. H. Sheridan's famous Shenandoah Valley campaign in the summer and fall of 1864. During this time the Author passed from the grades of Second to First Lieutenant and Captain, and commanded in the meantime in different battles five or more companies in his regiment which afforded an excellent opportunity to make a fairly interesting general diary of the fighting qualities of his regiment and especially of the companies which he commanded during that most interesting period of the Civil War when the backbone of the Rebellion was broken, which, together with Sherman and Thomas' cooperations led to the surrender of General R. E. Lee at Appomattox C. H. April 9, 1865.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from War as Viewed From the Ranks: Personal Recollections of the War of the Rebellion, by a Private Soldier In preparing this volume for publication, the author, to be frank, must confess that he had several motives in view. Chief among them, no doubt, is the selfish ambition to put in as permanent form as may be what he saw and did during the country's greatest storm and struggle. And also in this to show what the thousands of comrades did whose modesty and possible inability prevent them from a public display of their gallantry and heroism, before which his would pale away into oblivion. Another motive actuating him is to set before the public mind in as true and clear a light as may be what actual part the private soldier took in the great civil war. It is a well known fact that history generally accords the toils and honors, as well as achievements, to the officers of the army. It is not intended by this volume to pluck one laurel from the noble brow, nor detract one ray of glory from the lustrious fame of any brave and gallant commander of the teeming hosts in that mighty conflict. No! No! But if one star may be added to the crown of the private, if his intrinsic worth may be put forward and his name be made endearing and lasting, surely no one will object. The author had in view also, the edification of the present generation. And the many little incidents related will go far to explain much that otherwise must be obscure to tho.se who have not had personal observation of war. With a hope that it may be accepted and appreciated by a generous public, as we already have the guarantee that it is by our comrades, we present it to you. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published by UNC Press in 1989, Fighting for the Confederacy is one of the richest personal accounts in all of the vast literature on the Civil War. Alexander was involved in nearly all of the great battles of the East, from First Manassas through Appomattox, and his duties brought him into frequent contact with most of the high command of the Army of Northern Virginia, including Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and James Longstreet. No other Civil War veteran of his stature matched Alexander's ability to discuss operations in penetrating detail-- this is especially true of his description of Gettysburg. His narrative is also remarkable for its utterly candid appraisals of leaders on both sides.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections of the War: A Record of Service With the Ninety-Third New York Vol; Infantry and the First Brigade, First Division, Second Corps, Army of the Potomac Rich vied with poor to prove their American manhood, and enrolled their names side by side on the recruiting lists which were open on every hand. Company by company they marched to the camps of instruction and there formed into regiments in which they were to win a deathless fame, but not until they had been taught the rudiments of the science of destructive war. None were yet educated enough to know why they could not at once march on to sweep from the face of the land the hosts which were organizing to oppose what they thought must be an ever victorious march, from which the should quickly return, clothed in a halo of glory, and welcomed by the plaudits of the grateful country, which was supposed to be ready to crown them with the victors laurels, as its conquering heroes. The writer shared in the aspirations and patriotic ardor of many of his fellows, and early in the fall of 1861 became one of the multitude of which was sung: "We are coming, Father Abraham, Three hundred thousand more." Having opened an office for the practice of law in Whitehall, Washington County, N. Y., early in the spring, and beginning to see a practice opening before him, it was something of a sacrifice, but youthful blood and patriotic desire were the stronger, and the call was obeyed. A county convention was called and held at Argyle, where, after brisk, stirring and patriotic speeches, it was resolved to raise a regiment to represent the County of Washington, New York, in the war, and John S. Crocker, of Cambridge was selected to recruit, organize and command the regiment. The holding of this convention was the only step taken by the count to forward the cause, and it made no appropriation of means, nor did it give any financial assistance to those who commenced the labor of recruiting for the "Washington County regiment."
