In this book little or nothing is said of any of these matters; they do not interest me; they are superficial, and I do not care for surface things they are what divide, and truth is what unites. It is of the humanity which India shares with the rest of the world, the hearts that beat always the same under whatever skin, the ideals that can never be choked by no matter what customs or religions, that this book is concerned with. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Undercurrents of the Second Empire: Notes and Recollections Even before the fall of the Second Empire, historians of high attainments like Lanfrey and Taxile Delord were "whittling" the gigantic figure of Napoleon I. They were probably prompted by a desire similar to that which caused Jacob to pill white strakes in the rods of green poplar and hazel and chestnut tree in Laban's field. With this difference, though, that Lanfrey and Taine after him did not set the whittled Titan before the mentally strongest progenitors of the coming generations, but before the mentally weakest. Lanfrey and Taine have had a kind of reward, notably among French Republicans, who have brought forth a generation which keeps yelling that the Napoleonic gods are dead. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grenadier a Story of the Empire Good reader, I'll not burden you with a long preface nobody likes a long preface. This is a story of the Empire. Follow with me, then, the French eagles, from the towers of Saragossa to the Kremlin's gilded dome at Moscow, in that stirring epoch which, as even the Prince de Metternich was forced to admit, can receive no more fitting appellation than The Age Napoleon. If when you have finished you feel that you have derived some pleasure and some profit from my labor, I shall say, like Gaspard in my story, That will be nice. I would like that - and so, good-bye. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Court Life of the Second French Empire Nearly every royal palace of any antiquity has its ghost. Hampton Court has three - those of Katherine Howard, Jane Seymour, and Mrs. Penn (nurse of Edward VI.). The old Schloss of Berlin is haunted by the White Lady, Agnes of Orlamunde, who was buried alive in its vaults, and whose appearance always forebodes death to some member of the Prussian Royal House. Further, a spectral Capuchin, connected perhaps with the monastery where the Hapsburgs have so long been buried, is said to flit at times along the corridors of the Imperial Hofburg at Vienna. In France the Palace of the Tuileries was likewise haunted by a familiar spirit. The Little Red Man, who, although he mostly remained unseen and unheard while he prowled through the splendid chambers, considerately revealed his presence every now and again in order to foretell some great change or disaster. Occasionally, when there was nobody of any consequence at the Tuileries, the Little Red Man went roving. He followed the ruler of the time to other palaces and places. He once journeyed as far as Egypt to advise General Bonaparte to return to France. He also visited the cliffs of Boulogne to foretell the failure of the projected invasion of England; and, again, in the last years of the First Empire, he showed himself both at Fontainebleau and at Waterloo. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patriotism and Empire History and poetry, we may be sure, will not willingly let die the antique tale of the three hundred who at Thermopylae held out for Sparta against the Persian host, knowing that there could be but one end, and facing it with a stern exaltation, combing their long hair for that, the last festival, and singing the while - 'Singing of death and of honour that cannot die.' It is true, there are offsets. There was no military wisdom in defending the pass after the Persians had got behind it; and if it was to be defended, it should have been, as before, from the narrows, not, as was finally done, by way of a sortie. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oneonta Memories and Sundry Personal Recollections of the Author The early settlers little thought they were forming the nucleus of a town which, within one hundred years, would maintain a population greater in extent than could be found at any other given point, within a section of the Empire State, extending from Kings ton, oh the east, to Cortland, on the west; from Amsterdam on the north, to Binghamton on the south. Oneonta village is Situated upon ground more or less hilly and The Plains a few miles west thereof has often been looked upon as a more natural place for a large town. In a purely physical sense, applied locally, this may be correct, but in considering the respective merits of the two points, in their relation ship to the general topography of the country sur rounding, a person of good judgment, if expressing an opinion, would decidedly answer in the negative. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Struggle for Imperial Unity: Recollections and Experiences Some fifteen years ago the late Dr. James Bain, Librarian of the Toronto Public Library, urged me to write my reminiscences. He knew that, as one of the founders of the Canada First party, as Chair man of the Organising Committee of the Imperial Federation League in Canada, then President of it, and after its reorganisation, under the name of the British Empire League in Canada, still President, I had much private information, in connection with the struggle for Imperial Unity, that would be of interest to the public. He was therefore continually urging me to put down my recollections in order that they should be preserved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections and Observations of General Nelson a Miles Embracing a Brief View of the Civil War, or From New England to the Golden Gate This Book is largely the result of a desire to comply with the wishes of friends who have expressed the opinion that such a work would find a goodly number of interested readers. It was no part of my purpose to write my memoirs or a history; but rather to retrace, with such readers as shall choose to accompany me, some portions of the journey of life that now lie in the past. It is impossible in a single volume to do justice to all my companions who were engaged in the great cause of the Civil War, or those who engaged in the war for civilization along our western frontier; yet it has been my endeavor to do injustice to none. I have by no means exhausted the important features that marked the original journey, but have aimed to point out briefly, as far as practicable, the more interesting and instructive events so that the time of the reader may be spent not only agreeably, but with some degree of profit. In presenting these thoughts and observations I have hoped to meet the favor of the intelligent, generous American, who I know to be most considerate, and I trust I may rely upon his liberal consideration, especially when it is remembered that I have been obliged to gather and prepare much of the material at spare hours during the time largely taken up with the cares or exacting official duties and responsibilities. In this I have had the earnest assistance of Mr. N. E. Dawson, and for his faithful and zealous labor I desire to express my appreciation. If this narrative shall inspire thought or promote a taste for further research and study along the diversified lines of development in our great and growing country, my efforts will not have been in vain. I have also endeavored to illustrate the difficulties and dangers to which my companions in arms were exposed, in order that, if possible, their services and achievements might be more fully appreciated by the beneficiaries who are now enjoying the fruits of their heroism and sacrifices.
