Book excerpt: This qualitative study explores the question, What is the lived experience of an actor's personal growth through the process of role immersion in live theatre? The heuristic research method was utilized in order to gain a rich understanding of the phenomenon, as well as to allow the primary researcher's personal experience to be included in the findings. Included in the study is an extensive review of the relevant topics in the literature including identity development and personal growth, expressive arts therapy, and psychodrama. Other topics covered include acting methods for role immersion as well as examples of professional actors' achieved personal growth through role immersion. Research comparing the personal growth of actors in a show and the personal growth of clients in therapy was also reviewed and evaluated. The experiences of 12 women and men were explored utilizing in-depth individual interviews and extensive analysis of interview data. A review of the trustworthiness of the study, or the validity and reliability measures utilized, was also provided. In keeping with the methodology of heuristic research, common themes representing the co-researchers' experiences were identified and described. Three individual depictions, or narrative descriptions of the phenomenon by individual co-researchers, were presented. In addition, a composite depiction, or an amalgam of the experiences of all of the co-researchers, was also offered. Three exemplary portraits were also included that illustrate the themes of the study and highlight specific examples of the phenomenon. A creative synthesis of the experience was also presented. Finally, a summary chapter detailing comparison findings to relevant literature, limitations of the study, implications of the research for psychology and other related disciplines, and suggestions for future research, as well as a comment on the primary researcher's personal growth via the process of this study was offered.
