Book excerpt: A diverse array of factors may influence both earnings and consumption; however, this work primarily focuses on the impact of investments in human capital upon an individual's potential earnings and psychic income. For this study, investments in human capital include such factors as educational level, on-the-job skills training, health care, migration, and consideration of issues regarding regional prices and income. Taking into account varying cultures and political regimes, the research indicates that economic earnings tend to be positively correlated to education and skill level. Additionally, studies indicate an inverse correlation between education and unemployment. Presents a theoretical overview of the types of human capital and the impact of investment in human capital on earnings and rates of return. Then utilizes empirical data and research to analyze the theoretical issues related to investment in human capital, specifically formal education. Considered are such issues as costs and returns of investments, and social and private gains of individuals. The research compares and contrasts these factors based upon both education and skill level. Areas of future research are identified, including further analysis of issues regarding social gains and differing levels of success across different regions and countries. (AKP).
Book Synopsis Investment in Learning by : Howard Bowen
Download or read book Investment in Learning written by Howard Bowen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The value of higher education has been under attack as seldom before in American history. We are told of the overeducated American, of the case against college, and of the failure of education to contribute significantly to the reduction of inequality. In this environment, republication of an exceptionally comprehensive and judicious analysis of all that has been learned and not learned about the consequences of American higher education comes at a most appropriate time. Investment in Learning more fully covers the various aspects of this subject than any yet to appear. Howard Bowen is optimistic about higher education, but his viewpoint is based on profound knowledge of both the economic and social aspects of education. Unlike some economists who insist on a strict cost-benefit analysis of expenditures on higher education in relation to outcomes, Bowen argues that the non-monetary benefits are far greater, to the point that individual and social decisions should be made primarily on those broader indicators. Cameron Fincher, in his new opening for the book, notes that "Publication of Howard Bowen's Investment in Learning was like a break in a long summer drought. . . . It was a comprehensive rebuttal to return-on-investment studies with negativistic findings." And in the foreword to the book, Clark Kerr simply says, "Howard Bowen is better prepared to survey the overall consequences of higher education in the United States than anyone else."

Book Synopsis Estimating the Returns to Education by : Harry Anthony Patrinos
Download or read book Estimating the Returns to Education written by Harry Anthony Patrinos and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typically estimates of the benefits of education investments show average private rates of return for the average individual. The average may not be useful for policy. An examination of the distribution of the returns across individuals is needed. The few studies that have examined these patterns focus on high-income countries, showing investments to be more profitable at the top of the income distribution. The implication is that investments may increase inequality. Extending the analysis to 16 East Asian and Latin American countries the authors observe mixed evidence in middle-income countries and decreasing returns in low-income countries. Such differences between countries could be due to more job mobility in industrial countries, scarcity of skills, or differential exposure to market forces.
Book Synopsis Investing in All the People by : Lawrence H. Summers
Download or read book Investing in All the People written by Lawrence H. Summers and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Bank Technical Paper 244. This report on the experiences of several Pacific island nations indicates that in remote villages, solar photovoltaic (PV) technologies are supplying reliable power at costs lower than those of the more commonly used diesel systems. Although the supply of electricity to households is limited, PV does provide isolated peoples with access to light and to information through television and VCRs. The study shows that the success of these programs depends not only on the technology itself but on personnel training, good fee collection systems, and careful financial management. Where managerial and technical expertise was lacking, maintenance by local, cooperatively owned utilites proved to be the best option. The authors present a case study from Tuvalu, where the solar PV system exemplifies the program's effectiveness in serving remote areas. The successful Tuvalu Solar Electric Cooperative Society (TSECS), formed in 1984, has been maintained by a well-trained technical staff with local and visiting technicians. It has also benefited from fee collection through an outside agency that prevents diversion of funds to other projects, local user committees to communicate with the utility, and an exclusive focus on PV systems. Environmentally attractive at both the global and local levels, PV solar technology appears highly promising for small-scale applications in developing countries.
