Book Synopsis Fifteenth-Century Persian Painting by : B. W. Robinson
Download or read book Fifteenth-Century Persian Painting written by B. W. Robinson and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1993-03 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, B.W. Robinson traces the development of the different styles of Persian painting during the fifteenth century, and considers a number of the problems and issues involved in establishing a methodology and system of classification for Persian painting of that period. Robinson begins, by way of background, with a review of the schools of Herat and Shiraz up to the middle of the century, and then proceeds to tackle in order the three main fields of controversy: painting under the Turkmans, Timurid paintings in Transoxiana and Timurid painting in India. The uneasy fusion of contrasting characteristics of Herat and Shiraz that resulted in the emergence of Turkman court painting is traced through the origins, development, and branching of the Turkman style into a definitive form. Then the author reviews a branch of the art almost entirely neglected up to now, which he identifies as originating in Transoxiana. Finally he provides a new approach to the study of pre-Mughal Indian painting in Persian style by dividing the material into five stylistic groups.

Book Synopsis Perspectives on Persian Painting by : Dr Barbara Brend
Download or read book Perspectives on Persian Painting written by Dr Barbara Brend and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a detailed study of the illustrations to Amir Khusrau's Khamsah, in which twenty discourses are followed by a brief parable, and four romances. Amir Khusrau (1253-1325) lived the greater part of adventurous life in Delhi; he composed in Persian, and also in Hindi. From the point of view of manuscript illustration, his most important work is his Khamsah (Quintet'). Khusrau's position as a link between cultures of Persia and India means that the early illustrated copies of the Khamsah have a particular interest. The first extant exemplar is from the Persian area in the late 14th century, but a case can be made that work was probably illustrated earlier in India.
Book Synopsis Persian Miniature Painting by : Laurence Binyon
Download or read book Persian Miniature Painting written by Laurence Binyon and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "No section of Persian art was so brilliantly and completely represented at Burlington House in 1931 as the section of Miniatures. It was the largest and finest collection ever displayed in Europe, and could claim to be fully representative. . . The Bodleian Library, the Libraries of Edinburgh University, the Royal Asiatic Society, and the India Office, lent precious manuscripts and single drawings; but the richest contribution came from that of a private owner, Mr. Chester Beatty. This material was largely new and unpublished; and its juxtaposition with the splendid loans from private collections in Europe and America, especially famous Paris collections like those of M. Vever, the late M. Claude Anet, and M. Cartier, afforded an unparalleled opportunity for comparative study such as was greatly needed." -- Introduction.

Book Synopsis New Perspectives on Safavid Iran by : Colin P. Mitchell
Download or read book New Perspectives on Safavid Iran written by Colin P. Mitchell and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2011-03-03 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dedicated to the renowned Safavid historian Roger Savory, this book brings together a collection of studies on the Safavid state of Iran (1501-1722) from the perspectives of political, social, literary, and artistic history. Savory, a doyen of Safavid studies in the 1960s and 1970s, was responsible for expanding and popularizing the study of Iran in the 16th and 17th century. To celebrate this legacy, well-established scholars of medieval and early modern Iran have contributed specific studies reflecting an array of research interests and specializations, which include critical re-examinations of issues of gender, literature, art and architecture, cultural and linguistic currents, illustrated historical chronicles, and courtly and administrative practices under the Safavid dynasty. This unique compilation is indicative of a growing interest in Iran and Iranian studies in both the academic and public spheres, and as such contains a number of new perspectives which will serve to supplement and re-interpret the existing corpus of Safavid scholarly literature to date. It will be an important text for scholars of world history and Middle East studies, as well as to historians in general.
Book Synopsis Islamic Law and Society in Iran by : Nobuaki Kondo
Download or read book Islamic Law and Society in Iran written by Nobuaki Kondo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between Islamic law and society is an important issue in Iran under the Islamic Republic. Although Islamic law was a pivotal element in the traditional Iranian society, no comprehensive research has been made until today. This is because modern reformers emphasized the lack of rule of law in nineteenth-century Iran. However, a legal system did exist, and Islamic law was a substantial part of it. This is the first book on the relationship between Islamic law and the Iranian society during the nineteenth century. The author explores the legal aspects of urban society in Iran and provides the social context in which political process occurred and examines how authorities applied law in society, how people utilized the law, and how the law regulated society. Based on rich archival sources including court records and private deeds from Qajar Tehran, this book explores how Islamic law functioned in Iranian society. The judicial system, sharia court, and religious endowments (vaqf) are fully discussed, and the role of ‘ulama as legal experts is highlighted throughout the book. It challenges nationalist and modernist views on nineteenth-century Iran and provides a unique model in terms of the relationship between Islamic law and society, which is rather different from the Ottoman case. Providing an understanding of this legal system in Iran and its role in society, this book offers a basis for assessing the motives and results of modern reforms as well as the modernist discourse. This book will be of interest to students of Middle Eastern and Iranian Studies.
