This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The permeability of hot mix asphalt (HMA) is of special interest to engineers and researchers due to the effects that water has on asphalt pavement performance. Significant research has been done to study HMA permeability. However, most of the studies primarily focused on relating permeability to the average percent air voids in the mix. Such relationships cannot predict permeability accurately due to the different distributions of air void structures at a given average percent of air voids. Air void distribution is a function of many factors such as mix design, compaction method, and aggregate properties. Recent advances in X-ray computed tomography and image analysis techniques offer a unique opportunity to better quantify the air void structure and, consequently, predict HMA permeability. This study is focused on portraying permeability as a function of air void size distribution by using a probabilistic approach that was previously developed by Garcia Bengochea for soils. This approach expresses permeability as a function of the probability density function (pdf) of the air void size distribution. Equations are derived in this thesis to describe this relationship for laboratory specimens compacted using the linear kneading compactor (LKC) and Superave[superscript]TM gyratory compactor (SGC) as well as for field cores (labeled as MS). A good correlation exists between permeability and the pdf of the air voids that formed the flow paths (i.e. connected voids). The relationship between moisture damage, air void structure, and cohesive and adhesive bond energy is also investigated in this study. Moisture damage is evaluated by monitoring changes in mechanical properties due to moisture conditioning. The influence of air void structure on pore pressure is studied using a recently developed program at Texas A & M University that simulates fluid flow and pore pressure in a porous medium. The surface free energy of the aggregates and asphalt are calculated from laboratory measurements using the Universal Sorption Device (USD) and the Wilhelmy Plate method, respectively, in order to test the compatibility of the aggregates with the asphalt in the presence of water.

This book was released on 2009 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The water permeability of asphalt pavements has been of interest to both researchers and practitioners because the ingress of water into the pavement and its impact within pavement layers can potentially result in moisture induced damage and pavement premature failure. The uncertainty and diversity of permeability in asphalt pavements have motivated scholars to investigate various test methods to reliably determine pavement permeability and the coefficient of permeability. An important question related to such testing is whether the permeability of laboratory prepared specimens can be correlated to the permeability of constructed pavement. If such a correlation can be developed, determining the permeability of laboratory prepared specimens could be included as part of the asphalt mix design process. It has been the focus of the research presented in this thesis to investigate existence of such correlation and to determine if the permeability of lab-compacted specimens can be applied to predict the permeability of field compacted specimens. This research exploits an experimental approach to derive the correlation. This study tested three sets of asphalt concrete mixes from three different counties in Pennsylvania representing three mixes with different aggregate gradations and types, and with different asphalt binder contents. The sets included field cores from constructed pavements as well as loose materials obtained behind the paver. The loose mixes were compacted in the laboratory to prepare specimens. Test results indicated that the permeability of field cores with a 12.5 nominal maximum aggregate size have a reasonable relationship with the permeability of corresponding lab compacted specimens. However, the two other mixes with 9.5 mm nominal maximum aggregate size had significantly lower permeability and did not exhibit a meaningful relationship between the permeability of field cores and lab compacted specimens. Finally, this research also investigated the impact of aggregate size, gradation, specimen thickness, and air void on the permeability of Hot Mixed Asphalt.
Book Synopsis Moisture Damage in Asphalt Concrete by : Russell G. Hicks
Download or read book Moisture Damage in Asphalt Concrete written by Russell G. Hicks and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1991 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to pavement designers, construction engineers, maintenance engineers, and others interested in avoiding or limiting moisture damage in asphalt concrete. Information is provided on physical and chemical explanations for moisture damage in asphalt concrete, along with a discussion of current practices and test methods for determining or reducing the susceptibility of various asphalt concrete components and mixtures to such damage. Moisture damage in asphalt concrete is a nationwide problem which often necessitates premature replacement of highway pavement surfaces. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the underlying physical and chemical phenomena responsible for such damage. Current test methods used to determine the susceptibility of asphalt concretes, or their constituents, to moisture damage are described and evaluated. Additionally, current practices for minimizing the potential for moisture damage are examined.

This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The infiltration of water in asphalt pavements promotes moisture damage primarily through damaging the binder cohesive bond and the adhesive bond between aggregates and binder. Moisture damage is associated with excessive deflection, cracking, and rutting. The first step in addressing the problems caused by the presence of water within pavement systems is quantifying the permeability of hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixes. This dissertation deals with the development of empirical-analytical and numerical approaches for predicting the permeability of HMA. Both approaches rely on the analysis of air void distribution within the HMA microstructure. The empirical-analytical approach relies on the development of modified forms of the Kozeny-Carman equation and determining the material properties involved in this equation through three dimensional microstructure analyses of X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) images. These properties include connected percent air voids (effective porosity), tortuosity, and air void specific surface area. A database of materials and permeability measurements was used to verify the developed predicting equation. The numerical approach, which is the main focus of this study, includes the development of a finite difference numerical simulation model to simulate the steady incompressible fluid flow in HMA. The model uses the non-staggered system that utilizes only one cell to solve for all governing equations, and it is applicable for cell Reynolds number (Re[subscript]c) values that are not restricted by Re[subscript]c [greater than or equal to] 2. The validity of the numerical model is verified through comparisons with closed-form solutions for idealized microstructure. The numerical model was used to find the components of the three-dimensional (3-D) permeability tensor and permeability anisotropy values for different types of HMA mixes. It was found that the principal permeability directions values are almost in the horizontal and vertical directions with the maximum permeability being in the horizontal direction.
