Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the Earth’s biosphere is characterized by low temperatures. Vast areas (>20%) of the soil ecosystem are permanently frozen or are unfrozen for only a few weeks in summer. Permafrost regions occur at high latitudes and also at high ele- tions; a significant part of the global permafrost area is represented by mountains. Permafrost soils are of global interest, since a significant increase in temperature is predicted for polar regions. Global warming will have a great impact on these soils, especially in northern regions, since they contain large amounts of organic carbon and act as carbon sinks, and a temperature increase will result in a release of carbon into the atmosphere. Additionally, the intensified release of the clima- relevant tracer gas methane represents a potential environmental harzard. Significant numbers of viable microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, p- totrophic cyanobacteria and green algae, fungi and protozoa, are present in per- frost, and the characteristics of these microorganisms reflect the unique and extreme conditions of the permafrost environment. Remarkably, these microorg- isms have been reported to be metabolically active at subzero temperatures, even down to ?20°C.

Book Synopsis Bridge Foundations in Permafrost Areas, Moose and Spinach Creeks, Fairbanks, Alaska by : Frederick E. Crory
Download or read book Bridge Foundations in Permafrost Areas, Moose and Spinach Creeks, Fairbanks, Alaska written by Frederick E. Crory and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under a joint research project between the Alaska Department of Highways and the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, cooperative field observations and tests were conducted during and following construction of the Moose and Spinach Creek bridges, Fairbanks, Alaska. Site investigations and bridge foundation designs of the Alaska Department of Highways, bridge pile installation data, and ground temperature conditions for a one-year period are presented. Two test piles and three anchor piles were installed in close proximity to the Moose Creek bridge and load settlement tests were performed. The capacity of a sand-water slurried test pile was less than 10 tons, while that of an adjacent driven pile was about 45 tons. Greater capacities could have been easily achieved by driving the piles to bedrock rather than a specified elevation. To prevent frost heaving of the shallow piles at Spinach Creek an anti-heaving soil-oil-wax mixture was employed to a depth of 10 feet.

Book Synopsis The Strength of Permafrost Under Building Foundations by : Vsevolod Glebovich Berezant︠s︡ev
Download or read book The Strength of Permafrost Under Building Foundations written by Vsevolod Glebovich Berezant︠s︡ev and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The strength of permafrost is basically determined by the force of cohesion which usually varies between 2.5 and 18 kg per cm2. The angle of internal friction does not exceed 20° either in frozen clay or in frozen sandy soils, and may be disregarded whenever the cohesion force is expressed by the magnitude of 2.0 kg per cm2, or more. A modified revision is given of Prandtl?s formula to determine the critical load on frozen ground foundations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monograph describes the various kinds of foundations used for structures on permafrost with a brief discussion of foundations in areas of seasonal frost. Special attention is given to piled foundations in permafrost and the design of ventilation systems for controlling thaw under heated buildings. Appendixes outline techniques for computing the depth of freezing or of thawing, the design of refrigeration systems for artificial freezing, and the recommended procedure in the USSR for static pile tests. Included in the main text are 51 figures and 62 selected references. (Author).
Book Synopsis Thermal Design Considerations in Frozen Ground Engineering by : Thomas G. Krzewinski
Download or read book Thermal Design Considerations in Frozen Ground Engineering written by Thomas G. Krzewinski and published by ASCE Publications. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Technical Council on Cold Regions Engineering of ASCE. The design of engineering projects in frozen ground requires thermal design considerations in addition to standard geotechnical design. Factors that influence the thermal characteristics of a site include climatological data, microclimatic characteristics, local hydrology, soil properties, and disturbance. This monograph presents ground temperature observations, procedures for temperature monitoring, analytical methods for ground thermal regime calculations, and ground thermal properties. Active and passive techniques for ground temperature control and ground thawing methods are also presented, followed by case histories of ground temperature effects.
