Download or read book Multiscaling in Molecular and Continuum Mechanics: Interaction of Time and Size from Macro to Nano written by G.C. Sih and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-29 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time, a book is being edited to address how results from one scale can be shifted or related to another scale, say from macro to micro or vice versa. The new approach retains the use of the equilibrium mechanics within a scale level such that cross scale results can be connected by scale invariant criteria. Engineers in different disciplines should be able to understand and use the results.

Download or read book Small Fatigue Cracks written by K.S. Ravichandran and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-09-30 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the fully peer-reviewed papers presented at the Third Engineering Foundation Conference on Small Fatigue Cracks, held under the chairmanship of K.S. Ravichandran and Y. Murakami during December 6-11, 1998, at the Turtle Bay Hilton, Oahu, Hawaii. This book presents a state-of-the-art description of the mechanics, mechanisms and applications of small fatigue cracks by most of the world's leading experts in this field. Topics ranging from the mechanisms of crack initiation, small crack behavior in metallic, intermetallic, ceramic and composite materials, experimental measurement, mechanistic and theoretical models, to the role of small cracks in fretting fatigue and the application of small crack results to the aging aircraft and high-cycle fatigue problems, are covered.

Book Synopsis Methods of Analysis and Solutions of Crack Problems by : George C. Sih
Download or read book Methods of Analysis and Solutions of Crack Problems written by George C. Sih and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1973-01-31 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is weH known that the traditional failure criteria cannot adequately explain failures which occur at a nominal stress level considerably lower than the ultimate strength of the material. The current procedure for predicting the safe loads or safe useful life of a structural member has been evolved around the discipline oflinear fracture mechanics. This approach introduces the concept of a crack extension force which can be used to rank materials in some order of fracture resistance. The idea is to determine the largest crack that a material will tolerate without failure. Laboratory methods for characterizing the fracture toughness of many engineering materials are now available. While these test data are useful for providing some rough guidance in the choice of materials, it is not clear how they could be used in the design of a structure. The understanding of the relationship between laboratory tests and fracture design of structures is, to say the least, deficient. Fracture mechanics is presently at astandstill until the basic problems of scaling from laboratory models to fuH size structures and mixed mode crack propagation are resolved. The answers to these questions require some basic understanding ofthe theory and will not be found by testing more specimens. The current theory of fracture is inadequate for many reasons. First of aH it can only treat idealized problems where the applied load must be directed normal to the crack plane.
Book Synopsis Fracture and Fatigue Control in Structures by : John M. Barsom
Download or read book Fracture and Fatigue Control in Structures written by John M. Barsom and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation An introduction for practicing engineers or students at the beginning graduate or advanced undergraduate level, emphasizing the application of fracture mechanics to preventing fracture and fatigue failures in structures, rather than the theoretical aspects of the field. The topics include stress analysis for members with cracks, resistance forces, fatigue crack initiation, and fitness for service. Among the case studies are bridges, oil tankers, and steel casings. The earlier editions were in 1977 and 1987. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

Book Synopsis Investigation of Engine-exhaust-airframe Interference on a Cruise Vehicle at Mach 6 by : James M. Cubbage
Download or read book Investigation of Engine-exhaust-airframe Interference on a Cruise Vehicle at Mach 6 written by James M. Cubbage and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results from an investigation of the effects of underexpanded engine exhaust flow on the aerodynamic performance and stability of a cruise airplane at Mach 6 are presented. The influence of wing reflex angle and nozzle geometry on exhaust flow interference effects was investigated on a flat-plate model. The experiments were conducted at a free-stream Reynolds number of 17.05 X 10 (to the 6 power) based on the length of the airplane model over a model angle-of-attack range of 0(degrees) to 10(degrees) and at nozzle static-pressure ratios from 1 to approximately 4.
