Book excerpt: A computer simulation model developed for determining the manner in which undesired spread spectrum signals affect the performance of conventional narrowband AM and FM voice communication systems is described. Direct-sequence, frequency-hopping and hybrid, frequency-hopping/direct-sequence, spread spectrum interference signals were modeled. Binary phase-shift keying and minimum-shift keying were included for the carrier modulation of the direct-sequence signals and the direct-sequence portion of the hybrid signals. In addition to the spread spectrum interference, pulsed interference and white Gaussian noise were modeled. Using articulation index as the measure of performance, comparisons are made between system performance for direct-sequence interference and white Gaussian noise. System performance for frequency-hopping or frequency-hopping/direct-sequence interference is compared with that for pulsed interference. (Author).

Book excerpt: With the increasing density of communications systems in the wireless spectrum, the ability for two communications systems to share the same frequency space will become critical. To accommodate this, it becomes necessary to understand the nature of impairments introduced when two systems share the same spectrum. Traditionally, the performance of a communication system is analyzed in the presence of random interfering noise (Gaussian, Rayleigh, etc.), specific channel impairments like multipath or fading, or narrowband interferers. This work will focus solely on the wideband interference of one communication system on another. Wireless communications systems are increasingly bifurcating along two primary paths: OFDM and Spread Spectrum. This thesis will analyze three parameters of an OFDM system to understand their impact on a forward-path, single-transmitter DSSS system, both analytically and empirically. Ultimately, the effect of these parameters on probability of error and a method to reject the interference of each system on the other will be presented.

Book excerpt: This thesis investigates the anti-jam performance of an adaptive spread spectrum communication's system. The adaptive filter is assumed to be ideal in that it perfectly locates the jamming signal and adapts its bandwidth to exactly filter out the jamming signal. The colored-noise (jammer) and bandlimited white noise are considered to have flat power spectral densities within their respective bandwidths. The spread spectrum technique considered is that of direct sequence modulation. Three criteria are used to evaluate the system: autocorrelation peak degradation, signal-to-noise ratio, and intersymbol interference. The results indicate that an adaptive spread spectrum communication's system is able to provide an increased jam resistant communication system. (Author).

Book excerpt: The communication effectiveness of words processed through two modems of a spead spectrum radio system during various jamming conditions was measured in the presence of the simulated noise of an aircraft cockpit. Results indicate that the intelligibility of words processed through the two modems is differentially affected at various jammer-signal (J/S) power ratios by the presence of the simulated F-15A cockpit noise. Word intelligibility decreased with corresponding increases in the J/S power ratio, although the effect is not a simple one, i.e., it is not the same at all J/S levels. It is also indicated that high levels of the simulated cockpit noise produce greater decrements in word intelligibility than low levels for all the J/S power ratios evaluated. The importance of evaluating potential Air Force voice communication systems in as realistic an acoustical environment as practical is emphasized. (Author).

Book excerpt: The relationship between measures of degradation (for digital systems: error probability; and for analog systems: articulation score) has been examined for the purpose of establishing quantitative criteria for satisfactory performance of various modulation systems in the presence of various types of interference. Two empirical relationships are proposed which, with adjustment of only two parameter values, provide good correspondence between signal-to-interference ratio and the performance measure for each case. The hype is starting to fade, and the hard work of deploying new systems and services for personal communications is underway. In the United States, the FCC propelled the wireless era from infancy to mainstream with a $7.7 billion auction of 60 MHz of radio spectrum in the 180011900 MHz band. With the largest single sale of public property in the history of mankind mostly complete, the resources of the entire world are being called upon to develop inexpensive, rapidly deployable wireless systems and sub scriber units for an industry that is adding subscribers at greater than 50% annual rate. This growth is commonplace for wireless service companies throughout the world, and in the U.S., where as many as 7 licensed wireless service providers may be competing for cellularfPCS customers within the next couple of years, differentiators in cost, qual ity, service, and coverage will become critical to customer acceptance and use. Many of these issues are discussed in the papers included in this book.
