Book excerpt: Accelerated bridge construction has quickly become the preferred method for the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) as well as many other DOT's across the United States. This type of construction requires the use of full depth precast panels for the construction of the bridge deck. The segmented deck panels produce transverse joints between panels and have come to be known as the weakest portion of the deck. Cracking often occurs at these joints and is reflected through the deck overlay where water accesses and begins corrosion of the reinforcement and superstructure below. For this reason post-tensioning of the deck panels is becoming a regular practice to ensure that the deck behaves more monolithically, limiting cracking. The current post-tensioning used by UDOT inhibits future replacement of single deck panels and requires that all panels be replaced once one panel is deemed defective. The new curved bolt connection provides the necessary compressive stresses across the transverse joints but makes future replacement of a single deck panel possible without replacing the entire bridge deck. To better understand the behavior of the new curved bolt connection under loadings, laboratory testing was undertaken on both the curved bolt and the current post-tensioning used by UDOT. The testing specimens included full-scale, full-depth, precast panels that were connected using both system. The testing induced typical stresses on the panels and connections, subjecting them to negative bending and shear. The overall performance of the curved bolt proved satisfactory. The moment capacity of both connections surpassed all theoretical calculations. The yield and plastic moments were 17% and 16% lower, respectively, than the UDOT post-tension system while at those moments deflection was relatively the same. Due to the anchorage location of the curved bolts, the reinforcement around the transverse joint received up to 5 times the strain of that of the post-tension connections. Although both systems performed well when subjected to shear forces and as compared to the theoretical capacities, the post-tension connection greatly surpassed the curved bolt in shear capacity.

Book excerpt: The Accelerated bridge construction (ABC) techniques are gaining popularity among the departments of transportation (DOTs) due to their reductions of on-site construction time and traffic delays. One ABC technique that utilizes pre-cast deck panels has demonstrated some advantages over normal cast-in-place construction, but has also demonstrated some serviceability issues such as cracks and water leakage to the transverse joints. Some of these problems are addressed by applying longitudinal pre-stressing. This thesis evaluates the service and ultimate capacities in both flexure and shear, of the finite element models of the post-tensioned system currently used by Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and a proposed curved-bolt system to confirm the experimental results. The panels were built and tested under negative moment in order to investigate a known problem, namely, tension in the deck concrete. Shear tests were performed on specimens with geometry designed to investigate the effects of high shear across the joint. The curved-bolt connection not only provides the necessary compressive stress across the transverse joint but also makes future replacement of a single deck panel possible without replacing the entire deck. Load-deflection, shear-deflection curves were obtained using the experimental tests and were used to compare with the values obtained from finite element analysis. In flexure, the ultimate load predicted by the finite element model was lower than the experimental ultimate load by 1% for the post-tensioned connection and 3% for the curved-bolt connection. The shear models predicted the ultimate shear reached, within 5% of the experimental values. The cracking pattern also matched closely. The yield and cracking moment of the curved-bolt connection predicted by the finite element model were lower by 13% and 2%, respectively, compared to the post-tensioned connection in flexure.

Cracking often occurs at the transverse connections of these panels, resulting in corrosion, and decreased bridge life. Previous laboratory testing of these connections was performed at Utah State University for the Utah Department of Transportation to determine maximum shear and moment capacities, cracking behavior, and cracking loads for five different connections. Two connections are Utah Department of Transportation standard connections. These connections are post tensioned and welded tie connection using shear studs. A different type of welded tie connection using rebar was also tested, along with two prototype connections using a curved bolt to apply post tensioning. As part of this research finite element models were created using ANSYS software to confirm the tested results, and provide models for future analysis. Moment-deflection and shear force-deflection curves were created using the results from the laboratory testing, and were compared with the results from the finite element analysis. The finite element models produced similar behavior and cracking loads when compared to the laboratory results. The curved bolt connections were found to be a good way of applying post tensioning.

Currently, there is a need for repair and expansion of the existing highways, which include all bridges along its path. Because of the high demand for the highway system, repair and expansion must occur rapidly and efficiently. In recent years, precast bridge deck systems have become an efficient way to reduce construction time during repair. This thesis presents the experimental research of the behavior of the U-Bar joint detail used in precast bridge deck systems. This detail consists of staggered reinforcement extending beyond the precast deck portion into the joint. Six specimens utilizing the U-Bar detail were constructed and tested. Three specimens were tested in flexure to simulate the forces applied in a longitudinal deck joint, while three specimens were tested in pure tension to simulate the forces experienced in a transverse deck joint located over an interior pier. A tight 180° bend at 3d[subscript b] was desired in order to minimize the thickness of the deck. To achieve this tight bend, deformed wire reinforcement was chosen for the U-Bar detail due to the favorable material properties of deformed wire reinforcement. The purpose of the testing was to determine if the joint details could generate a precast deck system that could emulate the monolithic cast-in-place deck systems already in use. For monolithic behavior in a precast deck system, the joints must be able transfer shear, tension and moments. In this research, the joint overlap length was the most dominant variable, and should not be less than 152.4 mm (6"). The precast bridge deck joint should consist of high strength concrete with f'[subscript c] of at least 68.9 MPa (10 ksi). The longitudinal reinforcement spacing should be no greater than 152.4 mm (6").

Book excerpt: Large numbers of vintage reinforced concrete deck-girder bridges remain in the national bridge inventory. Many of these exhibit diagonal cracking and other distress. Due to the design practices of the time, it is common to observe cracks at locations where flexural reinforcing steel is terminated along the span. The presence of diagonal cracking increases the demand in the flexural steel and some details may be susceptible to anchorage failure. Recent developments in load rating using Load and Resistance Factor Rating (LRFR), which incorporates Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT), require a check of the flexural steel in the presence of shear. This practice has resulted in tensile anchorage or flexural capacity checks controlling some load ratings. Previous tests performed by OSU indicate that failure for many girders exhibiting steep initial diagonal cracking is eventually controlled by shear-moment interaction which evolves into a much more shallow crack at failure. It is hypothesized that this is due to an underestimation of the bond stress in developing bars. To test this hypothesis, four full-scale tests were performed on specimens with a pre-cast crack and cutoff tensile bars. These tests indicate that the bond stress in the developed bars is greater than that predicted by current specifications. Failure behavior and subsequent load-induced cracking of each specimen was found to be independent of the initial diagonal cracking. Analysis indicates that current code procedures are sufficient to predict failure modes. However this must be done using a more appropriate estimate of bond stress.

The procedure for selecting durable closure pour (CP) materials for the connections is discussed firstly. The accelerated construction is quantified as two categories: overnight cure and 7-day cure of CP materials. Candidate materials are selected first based on literature review as well as tests of compressive strength and flow and workability. Then, performance criteria for selecting durable CP materials for both categories are developed based on durability tests of selected candidate materials. These durability tests include freezing-and-thawing durability, shrinkage, bond, and permeability tests. To investigate the longitudinal U-bar joint details, four pairs of full-scale slabs connected by a U-bar detail with one of the selected CP materials, overnight cure and 7-day cure, were tested. The loading demand necessary in the slab testing is determined based on the maximum forces in the longitudinal joint from an analytical parametric study. Static and fatigue tests under four-point flexural loading and three-point flexural-shear loading were conducted. Test results were evaluated based on flexural capacity, curvature behavior, cracking, deflection and steel strain. The transverse U-bar joint details are investigated to provide negative moment continuity in the multi-span bridges. Four full-scale specimens connected by a U-bar detail with one of the selected CP materials, overnight cure and 7-day cure, were tested. Static and fatigue tests under tension loading were conducted. The loading demand necessary in the beam testing is determined based on the maximum forces in the transverse joint from an analytical study. Test results were evaluated based on tension capacity, cracking, displacement and steel strain. Based on the test results, the developed longitudinal and transverse U-bar joint details are viable connection systems.

However, orthotropic decks have experienced various fatigue problems, resulting from high cyclic stresses in conjunction with inadequate welding details. In particular, crack at rib-to-deck welded joints due to wheel load is a concern because inspection and repair of the back side of this weld for closed ribs is not practical due to lack of access. Fatigue resistance of rib-to-deck joints can be significantly influenced by fabrication effects including weld melt-through and distortion control measures (for example, precambering and heat-straightening). Current design practice is to use empirical approach for fatigue safety assessments by conforming to the detailing requirements [for example, at least 80% partial-joint-penetration (PJP) weld at the rib-to-deck joint]. However, little experimental and analytical research has been done as to the code-specified requirements and fabrication procedure effects on the fatigue resistance of the PJP joint. Six 2-span, full-scale orthotropic steel deck specimens (10 m long by 3 m wide) were fabricated and subjected to 8 million loading cycles to study the effects of both weld melt-through and distortion control measures on the fatigue resistance of the PJP joint. Test results showed that six cracks initiated from the weld toe outside the closed rib. Only one crack developed at the weld root inside the rib; this crack initiated from a location transitioning from the 80% PJP to 100% penetration. Weld melt-through appeared to be detrimental in fatigue resistance. Precambering was beneficial as two effectively precambered specimens did not experience cracking in the PJP welds. Finite element analysis using effective notch stress method showed a good correlation with the observed crack pattern in testing. Bending stresses were dominant at the PJP joint ; shear and membrane stresses were very small. Parametric study showed that the fatigue resistance of the PJP joint can be significantly influenced by transverse loading location, deck plate thickness, and weld penetration ratio. Increasing the deck plate thickness was efficient in reducing the stresses, while the rib plate thickness had a little effect. Shallower weld penetration at the PJP joint appeared to have a positive effect in enhancing the fatigue resistance.
