Book excerpt: The seismic behavior of reinforced concrete shear walls in Chile generally demonstrated adequate performance as seen from the response of most Chilean multistory shear-wall reinforced concrete buildings after the 1985 and 2010 earthquakes. While shear walls are widely used in building construction, models for simulating the nonlinear response of shear walls have seen limited advances. The need to accurately model shear wall behavior is becoming more important as increased confidence in the seismic behavior of RC walls has led to more relaxed requirements for reinforcement and confinement of typical wall configurations. For example, walls built prior to the 1985 earthquake in Chile were based more on traditional practice and were not necessarily enforced by seismic codes. The majority of post-1985 construction was based on ACI-318 guidelines with relaxed provisions for the confinement of the walls. The changes in the structural configurations and reinforcement details of post-1985 shear-walls in Chile resulted in different behavior and observed damage compared to the pre-1985 walls. In this study, typical Chilean walls are modeled and analyzed so to evaluate the effectiveness of a wall macro-model developed to reproduce the observed behavior of those walls during the 2010 Chilean earthquake. Due to its simplicity and lower computational cost, a multi spring macro-model is used for the simulation. Since the modeling of an entire building presents numerous modeling and computational challenges, a 2D section of the building is modeled using OpenSEES. The calibration of the 2D section model is performed through comparison of the dynamic properties with a 3D elastic model of the entire building developed in SAP2000. The macro-model development includes recommendations for modeling shear behavior of selected structural walls. The research also provides guidelines for calibrating the spring properties of the macro-element as a function of the slenderness ratio of the wall, and the wall web reinforcement ratio. Findings from the study will be useful in advancing nonlinear simulation models for analysis of shear wall structures.

Book excerpt: Reinforced concrete structural (shear) walls are commonly used as lateral load resisting systems in high seismic zones because they provide significant lateral strength, stiffness, and deformation capacity. Understanding the response and behavior of shear walls is essential to achieve more economical and reliable designs, especially as performance-based design approaches for new buildings have become more common. Results of a case study of 42-story RC dual system building, designed using code-prescriptive and two different performance-based design approaches, are presented to assess expected performance. Median values and dispersion of the response quantities are, in general, well-below acceptable limits and the overall behavior of the three building designs are expected to be quite similar. However, the ability to define shear failure and collapse proved difficult and provided motivation to conduct additional studies. For both design of new buildings and evaluation/rehabilitation of existing structural wall buildings, an accurate assessment of median (expected) and dispersion of wall shear strength and deformation capacity are needed. A wall test database (124 specimens) was assembled to investigate the influence of various parameters on wall shear strength and deformation capacity, and to recommend alternative relations for strength and deformation capacity depending on expected wall behavior. Test results indicated that ACI 318-11 underestimates the shear strength of the shear-controlled walls. Mean curvature ductility ratios were obtained as about 3 and 7 for shear- and flexure-controlled walls, respectively. The new relations will allow improved damage and failure assessment of buildings utilizing structural walls for lateral load resistance. Failure assessment of RC shear walls also was conducted for the 15-story Alto Rio building which collapsed in the 2010 Chile earthquake. Possible reasons for collapse were identified using post-earthquake observed damage, structural drawings, and nonlinear static and dynamic response analyses. Analysis results indicate that collapse was likely influenced by various factors, including compression failure at the web boundary of T-shaped walls on the east side of the building, large shear demands at the filled-in corridor walls at the first level, and tensile fracture and splice failures at the west side of the building. Nonlinear modeling and analysis of the four-story RC building that was tested on E-Defense shaking table (2010) was investigated to assess current modeling approaches and assumptions, and to identify issues that require additional study. Including concrete tension strength, stiffness degradation, and strength degradation significantly improved the correlation between the analytical and test results.

Book excerpt: Following the February 27, 2010 Mw 8.8 Maule earthquake, an international effort was undertaken to better understand reasons for observed damage to concrete structural walls in buildings located in the affected region of Chile and to address potential design implications. The Chilean building code for concrete structures is based on the U.S. ACI 318 building code; however, based on the observed performance of over 400 buildings in the March 1985 earthquake-impacted Viña del Mar, Chilean Code NCh433. Of96 included an exception that special boundary elements (SBEs)--which are commonly required for walls in U.S. buildings--need not be provided. By taking exception to the special boundary element detailing provisions, the Chilean code allowed thin wall boundary zones with relatively large (typically 20 cm) spacing of transverse reinforcement (essentially unconfined) to be constructed. Given these differences, the 2010 earthquake is an excellent opportunity to assess the performance of reinforced concrete buildings designed using modern codes similar to those used in the United States. Data from damaged and undamaged buildings, as well as from parametric and experimental studies, are used to provide recommendations to improve the efficacy of U.S. provisions designed to inhibit structural damage at wall boundaries. Seven Chilean buildings were selected to investigate the performance of boundary elements during the 2010 earthquake. Several walls from each of the seven buildings were chosen to evaluate the ACI 318-11 Section 21.9.6.2 displacement-based trigger equation for determining if SBEs would have been required and if observed damage was consistent with the evaluation result (i.e., SBE required, no damage; SBE required, damage observed). The propensity of boundary longitudinal reinforcement to buckle was also investigated, taking into consideration the influence of boundary transverse reinforcement configuration and longitudinal reinforcement strain history. In conjunction with assessments of in-situ wall performance, parametric studies we conducted on wall sections with various attributes and laboratory tests were performed on prisms representative of wall boundary elements using NEES@UCLA facilities to further investigate structural wall boundary element performance under reverse-cyclic demands. The evaluation indicated that Chilean wall sections where the neutral axis depth exceeded the limit imposed by ACI 318-11 equation 21-8 and SBE-level detailing was not provided typically suffered significant concrete crushing and longitudinal bar buckling. Rebar buckling studies showed that, under large magnitude strain reversals, longitudinal reinforcement in flanged, tension-controlled walls is susceptible to buckling at non-flanged wall boundaries. Test results demonstrated that spacing-to-bar-diameter (s/db) ratios of 10.7 (8" spacing) and 8.0 (6" spacing) led to concrete cover loss initiated by longitudinal bar buckling upon reloading into compression from tension strains of approximately 2% or larger, followed by substantial strength loss on the subsequent loading cycle into compression. Specimens that did not exhibit damage initiated by bar buckling eventually failed due to global out-of-plane buckling (lateral instability), or by sudden crushing failure after cover concrete spalling. Results from analyses and experimental studies suggest compression reloading strains greater than 2% may initiate buckling of longitudinal reinforcement if spacing of transverse reinforcement is extended to the maximum permitted by ACI 318-11 for non-SBE configurations, and bar buckling may be possible in SBEs with reloading strains greater than 4%.

In the 1994 Northridge earthquake, examples can be found where walls possessed too much overstrength, leading to unintended failure of collectors and floor systems, including precast and post-tensioned construction. In the 2010 Maule Chile earthquake, many structural wall buildings sustained severe damage. Although Chilean design standards result in different reinforcement detailing than is common in U.S. walls, the failure patterns raise concerns about how well conventionally reinforced structural walls in U.S. buildings will perform during the next earthquake. Alternative wall design philosophies that offer more predictable response, with better damage control, should be investigated. After the Mw 8.8 Chile earthquake, the 15-story Alto Rio building in Concepción sustained failures near the base, overturned, and came to rest on its side. The collapse of the Alto Rio building was significant because it was designed using the Chilean Building Code NCh433. Of96, which requires the use of ACI 318-95 for design of reinforced concrete structural elements intended to resist design seismic forces. The failure of the Alto Rio building is significant for many reasons. It is the first modern shear wall building of its type to collapse by overturning during an earthquake. The building is studied using forensic data and structural models of the framing system subjected to earthquake shaking. The study identifies the likely failure mechanism and suggests areas for which design and detailing practices could be improved. The capabilities and shortcomings of the analyses to identify details of the failure mechanism are themselves important outcomes of the study. A second study explores the behavior of structural wall buildings using unbonded post-tensioned structural walls. Such walls offer the opportunity to better control yielding mechanisms and promote self-centering behavior. The study focuses on the measured responses of a full-scale, four-story building model tested on the E-Defense shaking table in Japan. The seismic force-resisting system of the test building comprised two post-tensioned (PT) precast frames in one direction and two unbonded PT precast walls in the other direction. The building was designed using the latest code requirements and design recommendations available both in Japan and the U.S., including the ACI ITG-5.2-09. The test building was subjected to several earthquake ground motions, ranging from serviceability level to near collapse. Analytical studies were carried out to test the capability of the structural models to replicate behaviors important to structural engineers, and to assess whether available analysis tools are sufficient to model dynamic behavior that results when a full-scale building is subjected to realistic earthquake ground shaking. Measured response data from such an outstanding test provides an opportunity to fully understand the response characteristics of PT walls and assess the ability of nonlinear analytical models to reproduce important global and local responses, including three-dimensional system interactions, both prior to and after loss of significant lateral strength. Moreover, this study to assess behavior and system interaction of PT walls leads to improvements of the current design ideas and performance expectations. The present study examines both the collapse of the Alto Rio building in Chile and the shaking table tests of the unbonded post-tensioned wall building in Japan. The collapse study suggests areas of improvement in current design and detailing practice. The shaking table study suggests an alternative approach to design of shear walls in buildings. Both studies demonstrate the use of modern structural analysis tools to interpret building responses to earthquake shaking. Taken together, the studies provide added confidence in earthquake simulation capabilities and demonstrate alternatives for designing earthquake-resistant buildings that use structural walls.

They are stiff and strong, easily incorporated into architectural layouts, and, when well designed and detailed, generally considered to perform well under earthquake loading. However, damage to mid-rise walled buildings in the 2010 Chilean earthquake has reminded the engineering community that structural walls can sustain serious damage and that consequently there is a need to improve understanding of wall performance. Research presented seeks to address this need through experimental testing of slender planar walls and evaluation of performance-assessment tools for performance-based earthquake engineering. Despite the engineering community's reliance on reinforced concrete structural walls, relatively few experimental tests have been done to investigate the seismic performance of modern, code-compliant walls. Those tests that have been conducted provide a limited amount of data to support development of performance-based seismic design tools. To address this lack of data, a large experimental test program was undertaken by researchers at the Universities of Washington, Illinois, and California. As a portion of this program, four large-scale planar (rectangular) walls representative of mid-rise West Coast construction were tested and a large number of data were collected. Data analysis was done to provide improved understanding of earthquake response and performance of rectangular walls and support the validation of numerical models. Collected experimental data included detailed damage data. These data, along with documented damage from previous experimental tests, were used to develop performance-prediction tools. These tools, known as fragility functions, relate engineering demand parameters such as strain, rotation, or drift, to the likelihood of specific damage occurring. Damage sustained by buildings during the 2010 Chile earthquake provided a unique opportunity to evaluate performance-based design tools. Several mid-rise buildings that sustained damage in the earthquake were studied, with a focus on evaluating the fragility functions developed from experimental data and evaluating the ASCE/SEI 31/41 standards for the seismic evaluation of existing structures. Evaluation of the ASCE standards involved the use of both linear and nonlinear models. Results of the building evaluations indicate aspects of the procedures that require improvements.
