Book excerpt: This thesis summarizes the results of an experimental investigation on the performance evaluation of bridge deck concrete made with optimized aggregate gradation. The research conducted was part of the project sponsored by South Dakota Department of Transportation. The primary objective of the projects is to validate the research findings of the laboratory concrete against the performance of field concrete that used optimized aggregate gradation. The performance of field concrete used in three newly constructed bridge decks was evaluated by conducting a series of laboratory tests to determine compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, drying shrinkage resistance, alkali aggregate reactivity, sulfate attack, freeze-thaw durability, and rapid chloride permeability. This also includes measuring and documenting of the extent of cracks developed in the new bridge decks, and comparing with that of other similar existing bridges in the state. The study revealed that field concrete had good workability and finishability. The fresh concrete and micro-structural properties of the field concrete are similar to that of control concrete and the optimum laboratory concrete. The average compressive strength of the field concrete was higher that of control concrete and optimum laboratory concrete. The field concrete showed better resistance to sulfate attack, chloride permeability, drying shrinkage, alkali aggregate reactivity, and freeze-thaw exposure than control concrete and optimum laboratory concrete. The total number of cracks and the corresponding crack areas in the new bridge decks were significantly smaller than those of bridge decks made from A-45 concrete. It is recommended that the optimized aggregate gradation mixture proportions of Class F fly ash (20% cement replacement by weight) be specified for bridge deck concrete. Crack surveys need to be carried out on the new bridges annually for next three years to monitor any potential deterioration.

This method involves removal of deteriorated portions of a bridge deck followed by placement of a layer of dense (Type O) Portland Cement Concrete (PCC). The challenge encountered with this type of bridge deck overlay is that the PCC must be mixed on-site, brought to the placement area and placed with specialized equipment. This adds considerably to the cost and limits contractor selection, because not all contractors have the capacity or equipment required. If it is possible for a ready-mix supplier to manufacture and deliver a dense PCC to the grade, then any competent bridge deck contractor would be able to complete the job. However, Type O concrete mixes are very stiff and generally cannot be transported and placed with ready-mix type trucks. This is where a "super-plasticizer" comes in to use. Addition of this admixture provides a substantial increase in the workability of the concrete - to the extent that it can be delivered to the site and placed on the deck directly out of a ready-mix truck. The objective of this research was to determine the feasibility of placing a deck overlay of this type on county bridges within the limits of county budgets and workforce/contractor availability.

This adds considerably to the cost and limits contractor selection. A previous study (TR-427) showed that a dense PCC with high-range water reducers could successfully be used for bridge deck overlays using conventional equipment and methods. This current study evaluated the use of high performance PCC in place of a dense PCC for work on county bridges. High performance PCC uses fly ash and slag to replace some of the cement in the mix. This results in a workable PCC mix that cures to form a very low permeability overlay.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to examine the applicability of ternary binder systems containing ordinary portland cement (OPC), class C fly ash (FA) and silica fume (SF) for bridge deck concrete. This was accomplished in two parts, the laboratory part and a field application part. During the laboratory studies, four ternary mixtures, each containing either 20% or 30% FA and either 5% or 7% SF were subjected to four different curing regimes (air drying, 7 days curing compound application and 3 or 7 days wet burlap curing). In general, all four ternary mixtures exhibited very good water and chloride solution transport-controlling properties (resistance to chloride-ion penetration, chloride diffusivity and rate of water absorption). However, it was concluded that in order to ensure adequate strength, good freezing and thawing resistance, satisfactory resistance to salt scaling, and adequate shrinkage cracking resistance the FA content should not exceed 20%, SF content should not exceed 5% (by total mass of binder) and paste content should be kept below 24% by volume of concrete. Further, wet burlap curing for a minimum of 3 days was required to achieve satisfactory performance and to obtain a reliable assessment of in-situ compressive strength (up to 28 days) using maturity method. The second part of this research examined the performance of ternary concrete containing 20% FA and 5% SF in the pilot HPC bridge deck constructed in northern Indiana. Using maturity method developed for the purpose of this study, it was determined that the unexpectedly high RCP values of concrete placed late in the construction season were mostly attributed to low ambient temperature. Additional applications of the developed maturity method were also demonstrated. These include assessment of risk of scaling and reduction in time to corrosion initiation as a function of construction date, as well as estimation of long-term RCP values of concrete subjected to accelerated curing.

As the steel corrodes it exerts stresses on the surrounding concrete. When the stresses exceed the strength of the concrete, cracks or delaminations occur. This, of course, causes deterioration and spalling of bridge deck surfaces. Both the Latex and Iowa Method were used to repair bridge decks for this project. The concrete was removed down to the steel and replaced with approximately 1 1/2 inches of low slump or latex modified concrete. The removal of unsound concrete below the top layer of steel was sometimes necessary. The objective of this project was to determine if the bridge overlays would provide a cost effective method of rehabilitation. To do this, unsound and delaminated concrete was removed and replaced by an overlay of low slump or latex modified concrete.

Emphasis is placed on comparing bridge decks with silica fume and conventional concrete overlays and determining if the silica fume overlays commonly used on bridges in Kansas are performing at a level that justifies the extra cost and construction precautions. Forty continuous steel girder bridges, 20 with silica fume overlays, 16 with conventional overlays and four with monolithic bridge decks are included in the study.

Book excerpt: Cores from 36 bridge decks were evaluated to assess the condition and quality of the concrete by petrographic methods and direct and indirect measures of the transport properties. Transport properties were measured by a rate of absorption test (ASTM C 1585) and by electrical conductance using the rapid chloride permeability apparatus (ASTM C 1202). The decks were distributed across Virginia to reflect the varied geographic and climatic regions. Two bridge age groups, each constructed under different specifications, were represented: (1) from 1968 through 1971, where portland cement concrete with a maximum specified water-cementitious material ratio (W/C) of 0.47 was used with uncoated reinforcing steel; and (2) from 1984 through 1991, where the specification required a maximum W/CM of 0.45, required epoxy-coated reinforcement, and allowed the use of fly ash or ground slag as supplementary cementitious materials. The older group included 10 decks, and the younger included 26. In the younger group, 8 were identified as containing fly ash and 7 were identified as containing slag. Five of the concretes exhibited excessively high spacing factors, suggesting susceptibility to freezing and thawing damage, although only two showed signs of such damage. Four of the decks exhibited excessively small spacing factors that could significantly affect strength. Signs of poor paste quality attributable to excessive water were noted in approximately one-third of the concretes. Cracking was of significance in 12 decks but was limited to paste cracking in 6; of these, 5 contained either fly ash or slag. Four showed signs of damage related to alkali-aggregate reactions, including 3 with carbonate rocks, 1 of which contained slag. A general assessment based on petrographic observations showed a fairly even distribution of good, fair, and poor ratings. Fly ash and slag concretes tended to have initial rates of absorption in the lower third, often despite their petrographic rating, suggesting they are providing beneficial reductions in transport properties in field concretes. The secondary (longer term) rate of absorption related better with the petrographic ratings, and the fly ash and slag concretes again tended to have lower rates. Of the fly ash and slag concretes exhibiting paste cracking, only one consistently had high absorption rates. In contrast to the rate of absorption results, the electrical conductivity results suggested little differences between the concretes, raising questions about its usefulness in evaluating mature field concretes. This study demonstrates the beneficial contributions that fly ash and ground slag as supplementary cementitious materials provide to concrete durability, and they should continue to be used as an integral part of efforts to increase the service life of concrete structures. ASTM C 1585 provides a direct measure of the transport properties of concrete and should be incorporated into both the concrete materials acceptance and asset evaluation and management programs.
