Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of the 1990 Specialty Conference on Design and Performance of Earth-Retaining Structures, held in Ithaca, New York, June 18-21, 1990. Sponsored by the Geotechnical Engineering Division of ASCE. This Geotechnical Special Publication contains 50 papers on the design and performance of earth-retaining structures. Topics include historical perspectives, wall selection, contracting practices, waterfront structures, gravity walls, mechanically stabilized systems, cast-in-place walls, soil nailing, tied-back excavations, and seismic design. Papers survey the current state of the practice for earth retention and support, detail the rapid and profound changes to design and construction practices in the past 20 years, and forecast technological developments that are likely to carry the practice into the next century. Sixteen invited papers by international experts address aspects of each of the general topics, including trends in ground movements, effects of material selection and construction practices, and advances in design analyses and procedures. Other papers address specific case histories of various types of earth-retaining structures, provide results of performance monitoring, compare predicted to actual performance, and assess the impacts of construction practice and design procedures on performance.
Book Synopsis Cut-and-Cover Metro Structures by : Krishan Kaul
Download or read book Cut-and-Cover Metro Structures written by Krishan Kaul and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of their complexity and scale, metro structures capture all the essential aspects of a cut-and-cover structure, and so are given primary focus in this book. The design of a metro construction is outlined coherently and in detail; and the reader is shown how to apply this design process equally well to other, relatively simple, cut-and-cover structures. Geotechnical and structural engineering principles are combined with both design and construction practice to make this book a unique guide for engineers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treating anchorages as a direct application of the laws of statics and the theories governing the transfer of load, this book focuses on designs that are safe and reasonably priced. It is divided into two parts. Following a general introduction in the first chapter, Part One goes on to explore anchor systems, components, installation and construction details. Presents special anchor systems such as extractable, compression-type, multibell, and regroutable anchors. Analyzes the transfer of load and its relation to failure modes and anchor load capacity; deals with design considerations; covers mechanisms and types of corrosion; and details anchor stressing, testing programs, and evaluation standards. Part Two considers uses and applications and design aspects of anchored structures; presents design examples of practical value and reasonable simplicity; and incorporates examples and case histories.
Book Synopsis Theoretical Foundation Engineering by : B.M. Das
Download or read book Theoretical Foundation Engineering written by B.M. Das and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical Foundation Engineering provides up-to-date, state-of-the-art reviews of the existing literature on lateral earth pressure, sheet pile walls, ultimate bearing capacity of shallow foundations, holding capacity of plate and helical anchors in sand and clay, and slope stability analysis. The discussion of the ultimate bearing capacity of shallow foundations is the most comprehensive presentation on the subject to be found anywhere, and the review of earth anchors is unique to this book. In addition, each chapter includes several topics which have never appeared in any other book. The treatment is primarily theoretical and does not in any way compete with existing foundation design books. This is the only textbook of its kind. Not only will it be welcomed by teachers and first-year graduate students of geotechnical engineering, but it will be a useful reference for graduate students and consultants in the the field, as well as being a valuable addition to any civil engineering library.

Book Synopsis Sealing of Boreholes and Underground Excavations in Rock by : K. Fuenkajorn
Download or read book Sealing of Boreholes and Underground Excavations in Rock written by K. Fuenkajorn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sealing of boreholes and underground excavations has not received much engineering attention until fairly recently. The growing awareness of and sensitivity to environmental concerns of the technical community as well as of the public at large has resulted in an increasing recognition of the fact that these geological penetrations may have an environmental impact. The issue of possible contamination resulting from migration along boreholes, adits, shafts or tunnels unquestionably has been raised most forcefully with in the context of nuclear waste disposal. Several nuclear waste disposal programs, notably the Civilian and the Defence programs of the US De partment of Energy, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Canadian and Swedish radioactive waste disposal programs have conducted major research efforts aimed at developing adequate seal designs for penet rations in host rock formations for high-level nuclear waste repositories. While a considerable data base has been gathered over the last two decades or so with regard to the performance of seals, most of the information is presented in research reports and widely scattered papers in journals and proceedings of conferences. Hence, the materials are not readily accessible to potential users such as designers, contractors or regulators who are not familiar with nuclear waste disposal programs.

Download or read book Advanced Geotechnical Engineering written by Chandrakant S. Desai and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil-structure interaction is an area of major importance in geotechnical engineering and geomechanics Advanced Geotechnical Engineering: Soil-Structure Interaction using Computer and Material Models covers computer and analytical methods for a number of geotechnical problems. It introduces the main factors important to the application of computer methods and constitutive models with emphasis on the behavior of soils, rocks, interfaces, and joints, vital for reliable and accurate solutions. This book presents finite element (FE), finite difference (FD), and analytical methods and their applications by using computers, in conjunction with the use of appropriate constitutive models; they can provide realistic solutions for soil–structure problems. A part of this book is devoted to solving practical problems using hand calculations in addition to the use of computer methods. The book also introduces commercial computer codes as well as computer codes developed by the authors. Uses simplified constitutive models such as linear and nonlinear elastic for resistance-displacement response in 1-D problems Uses advanced constitutive models such as elasticplastic, continued yield plasticity and DSC for microstructural changes leading to microcracking, failure and liquefaction Delves into the FE and FD methods for problems that are idealized as two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) Covers the application for 3-D FE methods and an approximate procedure called multicomponent methods Includes the application to a number of problems such as dams , slopes, piles, retaining (reinforced earth) structures, tunnels, pavements, seepage, consolidation, involving field measurements, shake table, and centrifuge tests Discusses the effect of interface response on the behavior of geotechnical systems and liquefaction (considered as a microstructural instability) This text is useful to practitioners, students, teachers, and researchers who have backgrounds in geotechnical, structural engineering, and basic mechanics courses.
