Book excerpt: The relationship between measures of degradation (for digital systems: error probability; and for analog systems: articulation score) has been examined for the purpose of establishing quantitative criteria for satisfactory performance of various modulation systems in the presence of various types of interference. Two empirical relationships are proposed which, with adjustment of only two parameter values, provide good correspondence between signal-to-interference ratio and the performance measure for each case. Book excerpt: A computer simulation model developed for determining the manner in which undesired spread spectrum signals affect the performance of conventional narrowband AM and FM voice communication systems is described. Direct-sequence, frequency-hopping and hybrid, frequency-hopping/direct-sequence, spread spectrum interference signals were modeled. Binary phase-shift keying and minimum-shift keying were included for the carrier modulation of the direct-sequence signals and the direct-sequence portion of the hybrid signals. In addition to the spread spectrum interference, pulsed interference and white Gaussian noise were modeled. Using articulation index as the measure of performance, comparisons are made between system performance for direct-sequence interference and white Gaussian noise. System performance for frequency-hopping or frequency-hopping/direct-sequence interference is compared with that for pulsed interference. (Author).

Book excerpt: Fading and Interference Mitigation in Wireless Communications will help readers stay up to date with recent developments in the performance analysis of space diversity reception over fading channels in the presence of cochannel interference. It presents a unified method for computing the performance of digital communication systems characterized by a variety of modulation and detection types and channel models. The book includes coverage of multichannel reception in various fading environments, influence of cochannel interference, and macrodiversity reception when channels are simultaneously affected by various types of fading and shadowing.

Book excerpt: With the increasing density of communications systems in the wireless spectrum, the ability for two communications systems to share the same frequency space will become critical. To accommodate this, it becomes necessary to understand the nature of impairments introduced when two systems share the same spectrum. Traditionally, the performance of a communication system is analyzed in the presence of random interfering noise (Gaussian, Rayleigh, etc.), specific channel impairments like multipath or fading, or narrowband interferers. This work will focus solely on the wideband interference of one communication system on another. Wireless communications systems are increasingly bifurcating along two primary paths: OFDM and Spread Spectrum. This thesis will analyze three parameters of an OFDM system to understand their impact on a forward-path, single-transmitter DSSS system, both analytically and empirically. Ultimately, the effect of these parameters on probability of error and a method to reject the interference of each system on the other will be presented.

It starts by examining methods of generating chaos signals, with six types of chaos generators being considered. Then, three earlier proposed chaos communication systems are introduced. The performance of these three systems, with a variety of chaos generators and additive white Gaussian channel (AWGN), is studied. The simulation results show that an increasing spreading factor degrades the performance of differential chaos shift keying (DCSK) and correlation delay shift keying (CDSK) at low signal-to-noise ratios. The effect of initial conditions in DCSK is analyzed as well, and it is found that they do not significantly affect the results.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to model digital communications systems in the time domain using MATLAB Simulink and the Communications Toolbox and to determine and verify the system performance in the presence of additive noise and interference. While the theoretical results are available for the assessment of the influence of wideband gaussian noise on the performance of a digital communications system, determining the performance of a system in the presence of noise and interference requires a computer simulation. The time domain modeling allows the visualization of communication signals at various stages of transmitters and receivers and Monte Carlo type simulations to establish the bit error rates under realistic conditions (noise, interference) and for different values of transmitter/receiver parameters, different channel parameters and different types of interfering signals. It should be noted that the simulation does not account for system non-linearities.

This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing demand for high speed wireless applications and the scarcity of the spectral resources has necessitated the development of new concepts that enable more efficient utilization of the frequency spectrum. Ultra-wideband (UWB) is an emerging technology that is capable of utilizing the spectral resources more effectively by sharing the spectrum with other applications. This spectrum sharing however can potentially result in harmful interference from UWB systems to devices co-existing in the same frequency band. Therefore, in order to guarantee peaceful co-existence, the effects of UWB interference on co-existing systems have to be carefully analyzed. Towards this goal, in this thesis, we first study the effects of multi-band (MB) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) UWB interference on a generic uncoded narrowband (NB) system. For this purpose, we develop analytical expressions for the amplitude probability distribution (APD) and the bit error rate (BER) performance of the NB system in the presence of MB-OFDM interference. We use the obtained results to assess the accuracy of the Gaussian approximation (GA) for MB-OFDM UWB interference. We show that for most channel models and signal bandwidths the GA is unable to accurately predict the NB system performance and the exact BER analysis has to be used to obtain meaningful results. We also analyze the effects of UWB interference in a more general framework that allows us to study the impact of general types of non-Gaussian noise and interference on generic uncoded victim systems. Specifically, we present a unified asymptotic symbol error rate (SER) analysis of linearly modulated systems impaired by fading and generic non- Gaussian noise and interference. Our analysis also encompasses diversity reception with equal gain and selection combining and is extended to binary orthogonal modulation. The obtained asymptotic results show that for high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) the SER of the victim system.

In the space of a century, telecommunications networks have become one of our most complex creations, with ramifications that extend worldwide. Up until the 1960s, over 90 per cent of telecommunications systems operated on the old principles of analogue communication; in particular, microwave systems are often of the FDM/FM type. Since then, of course, the new digital technology has become increasingly prevalent"--Introduction, page [1].
