Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: 2.0, University of applied sciences, Munich, course: MBA, language: English, abstract: As people are the most important and valuable assets a company has, the human resource management (HRM) has a strategic role to play. However, not always this importance of HRM is seen and human resources (HR) as an organization have in some companies a minor standing. In order to measure the contribution of HRM to the corporate results a measurement system has to be established. This measurement system, the balanced scorecard (BSC), breaks down the corporate strategy to each level of a company and describes measures accordingly which finally makes the HRM role measureable. This assignment provides some background information about the balanced scorecard approach in general and for human resource management in particular. The information covers the different perspectives of a BSC as well as some possible measures. Further on, the performance measurement in HRM is described dealing with an explanation why it is not straight forward and were difficulties are. The chapter deals also with the benefits and how to measure them. As a summary the ad-vantages and limitations in using a balanced scorecard in the HRM are given. The work is closing with the ITM checklist providing a holistic overview of using the BSC approach inside a company and in HRM.

Balanced scorecard, the performance prism and activity-based management are the most popular frameworks in this setting. Based on the findings of R.G. Eccles’ acclaimed "Performance Measurement Manifesto (1991)" this book introduces new contexts and themes of application and presents emerging research areas related to business performance measurement and management, e.g. SMEs and sustainability. As a result of the 1st International Summer School Piero Lunghi on "Perspectives of Business Performance Management" this book is written both for students and academics, as well as for practitioners looking for new, yet proven ways to measure and manage business performance.

Book excerpt: This book is not just one of the many introductions to Human Resource Management that are published, year after year, for use in HRM classes. Authors of those introductions face many challenges, such as the need to produce something that is both theoretically sound and practically valuable, or to find a way to integrate discussions on a variety of topics into one comprehensible teaching tool. The author of this book took up those challenges by, on the one hand, closely following the conventions that HRM scholars all over the world adhere to with regards to the demarcation of subfields within the HRM discipline.

But when you operate across different countries and continents, performance management strategies cannot be one dimensional. HR managers need systems that can be applied to a range of cultural values. This important and timely text offers a truly global perspective on performance management practices. Split into two parts, it illustrates the key themes of rater motivation, rater-ratee relationships and merit pay, and outlines a model for a global appraisal process. This model is then screened through a range of countries, including Germany, Japan, USA, Turkey, China, India and Mexico. Using case studies and discussion questions, and written by local experts, this text outlines the tools needed to understand and ‘measure’ performance in a range of socio-economic and cultural contexts. It is essential reading for students and practitioners alike working in human resources, international business and international management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to contribute to the understanding of the debate surrounding strategic human resource management (SHRM) and organisational performance. The relationship between SHRM and organisational performance has been a heavily deliberated issue over the last decade. A survey of literature on SHRM and its impacts in terms of performance reveals that empirical results on this topic are, as yet, inconclusive. Whilst some studies have found the impact to be positive, the results from several other studies cast doubts concerning the overall efficacy of (positive) HR practices on firms’ performance. This book critically discusses the theoretical and empirical aspects of the relationship between strategic HRM and organisational performance. Ostensibly, when compared to earlier forms of people management, the essence of HRM was a closer alignment of the procedures and processes concerned with work and employment relationships to overall organisational objectives. Much of the HRM literature holds that specific HRM practices are likely to serve as a major source of competitive advantage. This belief has led to research into the link between HRM and performance. However, somewhat less clear is what specific HR practices are most likely to enhance performance, and, indeed, how performance may best be measured. This book, accordingly, seeks to explore which HR practices are most closely associated with better organisational performance according to subjective and objective measures. It also seeks to shed new light on the relationship between subjective and objective measures of organisational performance, and the relative reliability of the former in assessing the effectiveness of specific HR practices. The book also explores other important HR issues such as the role of the HR director, strategic HR involvement, and HR devolvement. Moreover, it has been argued that it is an interrelated system of HR practices or HR complementarities that enhance performance, with one practice encountered on its own not having the same result as when encountered in combination with others. This particular issue is also discussed in depth in this book.

Book excerpt: Meeting the challenges of high-performance HR Until 1760 ships routinely disappeared, ran aground, or sank because seafarers could not measure longitude. The cost in life and property was immense. Today, business faces a similar challenge, as the failure to measure human resources performance is just as costly and deadly to modern organizations. Senior executives once considered HR a "soft," unavoidable cost of doing business, responsible for compensation, employee transactions, company functions, workforce problems, and legal issues. Three factors changed this perception: the significant impact of high-performance HR, the implications of poorly performing HR, and soaring HR operating expenses. These factors have led to an increased demand and focus on HR metrics. Ultimate Performance approaches this challenge by providing clear, proven measurement solutions that will optimize the performance of people and businesses.
