Book excerpt: "Relational database systems have provided end users and application programmers with an improved working environment over older hierarchical and networked database systems. End users now use interactive query languages to inspect and manage their data. And application programs are easier to write and maintain due to the separation of physical data storage information from the application program itself. These and other benefits do not come without a price however. System resource consumption has long been the perceived problem with relational systems. The additional resource demands usually force computing sites to upgrade existing systems or add additional facilities. One method of protecting the current investment in systems is to use specialized hardware designed specifically for relational database processing. 'Database Machines' provide that alternative. Since the commercial introduction of database machines in the early 1980's, both software and hardware vendors of relational database systems have claimed superior performance over competing products. Without a STANDARD performance measurement technique, the database user community has been flooded with benchmarks and claims from vendors which are immediately discarded by some competitors as being biased towards a particular system design. This thesis discusses the issues of relational database performance measurement with an emphasis on database machines, however; these performance issues are applicable to both hardware and software systems. A discussion of hardware design, performance metrics, software and database design is included. Also provided are recommended guidelines to use in evaluating relational database systems in lieu of a standard benchmark methodology."--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several years benchmarking has been developed into an effective technique for performance analyses of computer systems. Relational database machines are relatively new computer systems for which a benchmarking technique does not yet exist. The benchmarking of relational database machine involves the identification and design of test programs through which relevant performance data can be gathered and interpreted. All features of relational database management must be considered when designing these test programs. The join operations are an important feature of relational database management. The test programs for the join operations necessarily include the repetition of certain queries during which specific join parameters are varied. These parameters include: tuple size, relation size, disk placement, and the use of indices. A number of join operations have been benchmarked. These operations are equality joins, inequality joins, three-way joins, and virtual joins (i.e., views). In addition, a number of relational database machine configurations have been utilized for benchmarking the join operations. The highlights of the thesis can be found in its contribution to a benchmarking technique for the join operations and its conclusions on the performance analyses of various relational machines in operating joins. It is therefore useful to construct databases for performance measurements of database machines. Furthermore, it is useful to utilize synthetic data, such that the volume of the reply can be predicted for a given query and the structure and attributes of the database can be varied for intended test queries. Conducting measurement studies using a synthetic database contributes to the generality of the results when different test queries are employed. A parameterized program is described herein which can be used to generate various relations for a synthetic database. The experiences in constructing and using the database generator are described. It is suggested that given sufficient information on real-world databases the generator may be useful for modeling them as well as for creating databases for benchmark tests. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The latest edition of a popular text and reference on database research, with substantial new material and revision; covers classical literature and recent hot topics. Lessons from database research have been applied in academic fields ranging from bioinformatics to next-generation Internet architecture and in industrial uses including Web-based e-commerce and search engines. The core ideas in the field have become increasingly influential. This text provides both students and professionals with a grounding in database research and a technical context for understanding recent innovations in the field. The readings included treat the most important issues in the database area--the basic material for any DBMS professional. This fourth edition has been substantially updated and revised, with 21 of the 48 papers new to the edition, four of them published for the first time. Many of the sections have been newly organized, and each section includes a new or substantially revised introduction that discusses the context, motivation, and controversies in a particular area, placing it in the broader perspective of database research. Two introductory articles, never before published, provide an organized, current introduction to basic knowledge of the field; one discusses the history of data models and query languages and the other offers an architectural overview of a database system. The remaining articles range from the classical literature on database research to treatments of current hot topics, including a paper on search engine architecture and a paper on application servers, both written expressly for this edition. The result is a collection of papers that are seminal and also accessible to a reader who has a basic familiarity with database systems.

Book excerpt: The International Workshop on Database Machines in Munich is the third of its kind, preceeded by the meetings in Florence (Sept. 81) and San Diego (Sept. 82). The workshop is aimed at providing an interchange of ideas and experience on computer systems designed to perform database operations more efficiently than general purpose computers with a software database management system. Many proposals have been published during the past 10 years, but now several systems have been built and practically implemented and some are even commercially available, so that confrontation with the real world is starting to occur. The kinds of question which arise during this phase of coming to maturity are those involved with evaluation and measurement. The emphasis of the workshop is therefore on performance evaluation and the respective modelling techniques and methodology. Data flow and other new topics (including algorithms) are also treated with respect to performance and efficiency. We are glad to be able to include some papers on existing commercial products - from both the designer and the user viewpoints. We hope to encourage critical comments in this field and have arranged a session with the title "Where Database Machines Are Going" - to be followed by a panel dis~ussion.

Book excerpt: This volume consists of a collection of 28 papers presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute held July 14-27, 1985 in the beautiful resort at Les Arcs, France. The director of this ASI was A. K. Sood and A. H. Qureshi was the co-director. Since its introduction in the early 1970s the relational data model has been widely accepted. Several research and industrial efforts are being undertaken to develop special purpose database machines to implement the relational model. In addition, database machines are being explored for applications such as image processing and information retrieval. In this NATO-ASI the lecturers discussed special purpose database machine architectures from the viewpoint of architecture and hardware detail, software, user needs, theoretical framework and applications. The papers presented were of two types - regular papers and short papers. The research in database machines is being conducted in several countries. This fact is under scored when it is noted that papers in this volume are authored by researchers in France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Turkey, U.K. and U.S.A. The first paper discusses the experience and applications of users with a commercially available database machine. In the following eight papers the characteristics of six database machines are discussed. The second, third and fourth papers deal with the RDBM project at the Technical University of Braunschweig (Germany). Zeidler discusses the design objectives, architecture and system design of RDBM. Teich presents the hardware utilized for sorting.

Book excerpt: As businesses undergo digital transformation, technologies will lead to greater efficiencies and change how we interact in traditional relationships among suppliers, producers, and customers, as well as between human and machine. One such technology is the introduction of management information systems (MIS) that provide a company with the coordination, control, analysis, and visualization of information by collecting from various digital environments. In today's digital age, information needs to be managed, and MIS have the ability to transfer the information obtained by computer systems to the business operations within the business models, business processes, and management functions. Advanced MIS and Digital Transformation for Increased Creativity and Innovation in Business is an essential reference source that discusses the impact of digital technologies in enterprises and their competitive environment on management information systems and examines the application of new technologies to support strategic decisions and realize exciting visions. Featuring research on topics such as machine learning, resource planning, and e-commerce, this book is ideally designed for managers, executives, IT specialists, analysts, business professionals, training officers, software engineers, business administrators, scholars, researchers, and practitioners seeking coverage on future trends, issues, and challenges in relation to management information systems.
