The trade-offs are that event-scheduling languages offer more modeling flexibility and process-oriented languages are more intuitive to the user. With these considerations in mind, authors David Elizandro and Hamdy Taha embarked on the development of a new discrete simulation environment that is easy to use, yet flexible enough to model complex production systems. They introduced this environment, Design Environment for Event Driven Simulation (DEEDS), in Simulation of Industrial Systems: Discrete Event Simulation in Using Excel/VBA. The DEEDS environment is itself an Excel/VBA add-in. Based on this foundation, the second edition, now titled Performance Evaluation of Industrial Systems: Discrete Event Simulation in Using Excel/VBA incorporates the use of discrete simulation to statistically analyze a system and render the most efficient time sequences, designs, upgrades, and operations. This updated edition includes new visualization graphics for DEEDS software, improvements in the optimization of the simulation algorithms, a new chapter on queuing models, and an Excel 2007 version of the DEEDS software. Organized into three parts, the book presents concepts of discrete simulation, covers DEEDS, and discusses a variety of applications using DEEDS. The flexibility of DEEDS makes it a great tool for students or novices to learn concepts of discrete simulation and this book can form the basis of an introductory undergraduate course on simulation. The expanded depth of coverage in the second edition gives it a richness other introductory texts do not have and provides practitioners a reference for their simulation projects. It may also be used as a research tool by faculty and graduate students who are interested in "optimizing" production systems.

Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive review of currently available Control Performance Assessment methods. It covers a broad range of classical and modern methods, with a main focus on assessment practice, and is intended to help practitioners learn and properly perform control assessment in the industrial reality. Further, it offers an educational guide for control engineers, who are currently in high demand in the industry. The book consists of three main parts. Firstly, a comprehensive review of available approaches is presented and discussed. The classical canon methods are extended with a discussion of nonlinear and complex alternative measures using non-Gaussian statistics, persistence and fractional calculations. Secondly, the methods’ applicability aspects are visualized with the aid of computer simulations, covering the most popular control philosophies used in the process industry. Lastly, a critical review of the methods discussed, on the basis of real-world industrial examples, rounds out the coverage.

Book excerpt: Control Performance Management in Industrial Automation provides a coherent and self-contained treatment of a group of methods and applications of burgeoning importance to the detection and solution of problems with control loops that are vital in maintaining product quality, operational safety, and efficiency of material and energy consumption in the process industries. The monograph deals with all aspects of control performance management (CPM), from controller assessment (minimum-variance-control-based and advanced methods), to detection and diagnosis of control loop problems (process non-linearities, oscillations, actuator faults), to the improvement of control performance (maintenance, re-design of loop components, automatic controller re-tuning). It provides a contribution towards the development and application of completely self-contained and automatic methodologies in the field. Moreover, within this work, many CPM tools have been developed that goes far beyond available CPM packages. Control Performance Management in Industrial Automation: · presents a comprehensive review of control performance assessment methods; · develops methods and procedures for the detection and diagnosis of the root-causes of poor performance in complex control loops; · covers important issues that arise when applying these assessment and diagnosis methods; · recommends new approaches and techniques for the optimization of control loop performance based on the results of the control performance stage; and · offers illustrative examples and industrial case studies drawn from – chemicals, building, mining, pulp and paper, mineral and metal processing industries. This book will be of interest to academic and industrial staff working on control systems design, maintenance or optimisation in all process industries.

In order to deal with societal challenges, novel technologies play an important role. For the advancement of technology, it is essential to share innovative ideas and thoughts on a common platform where researchers across the globe meet together and revitalize their knowledge and skills to tackle the challenges that the world faces. The high complexity of the issues related to societal interdisciplinary research is the key to future revolutions. From research funders to journal editors, policymakers to think tanks, all seem to agree that the future of research lies outside disciplinary boundaries. In such prevailing conditions, various working scenarios, conditions, and strategies need to be optimized. Optimization is a multidisciplinary term, and its essence can be inculcated in any domain of business, research, and other associated working dynamics. Globalization provides all-around development, and this development is impossible without technological contributions. This volume’s mission is at the core of industrial engineering. All the manuscripts appended in this volume were double-blind peer-reviewed by committee members and the review team, promising high-quality research. This book provides deep insights to its readers about the current scenarios and future advancements of industrial engineering.

Unexpected events, such as order changes, equipment failures and product defects, affect the performance of the system and complicate decision-making. This volume is devoted to the development of analytical methods aiming at responding to variability in a way that limits its corrupting effects on system performance. The book includes fifteen novel chapters that mostly focus on the development and analysis of performance evaluation models of manufacturing systems using decomposition-based methods, Markovian and queuing analysis, simulation, and inventory control approaches. They are organized into four distinct sections to reflect their shared viewpoints: factory design, unreliable production lines, queuing network models, production planning and assembly.

But when you operate across different countries and continents, performance management strategies cannot be one dimensional. HR managers need systems that can be applied to a range of cultural values. This important and timely text offers a truly global perspective on performance management practices. Split into two parts, it illustrates the key themes of rater motivation, rater-ratee relationships and merit pay, and outlines a model for a global appraisal process. This model is then screened through a range of countries, including Germany, Japan, USA, Turkey, China, India and Mexico. Using case studies and discussion questions, and written by local experts, this text outlines the tools needed to understand and ‘measure’ performance in a range of socio-economic and cultural contexts. It is essential reading for students and practitioners alike working in human resources, international business and international management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to provide a synthesis of work and ideas done by our team over the last fifteen years in the field of information processing for expression of industrial performance. The statement of objectives on the one hand and the calculation of the other performances are discussed, with the search for the explanation of the link between these two basic steps of an industrial improvement. Beyond the synthetic and typological character of this study, the originality of this work lies in the consideration of the temporal dimension of the objectives, and spread on performance expressions. A fuzzy processing and multi-criteria aggregations time information that can be quantitative, qualitative or symbolic are proposed, in line with industrial practice and literature in the field of performance management.
