Book excerpt: Commercially available Micro-Composite, Multi-Structural, Formable (MMFX) steel reinforcing bars are a proprietary product claiming to provide both high tensile strength and excellent corrosion-resistance when compared to conventional Grade 60 steel. Use of MMFX steel reinforcement could potentially lead to significant cost savings due to these unique characteristics. Recently, many state transportation departments, including the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), have begun to use MMFX steel as a direct replacement for conventional steel in reinforced concrete bridge decks. However, the behavior of bridge decks reinforced with MMFX steel bars was previously undocumented. In light of this fact, a research program was commissioned by the NCDOT in which three concrete bridge decks, each having a span-to-depth ratio of 12.5, were constructed and tested to failure under simulated truck wheel loads. Two of the decks were constructed with identical reinforcement ratios, one utilizing conventional Grade 60 steel and the other MMFX steel. The third bridge deck was also reinforced with MMFX steel, but was reinforced with 33 percent less steel in an attempt to utilize the higher tensile strength offered by MMFX. The results of the experimental program demonstrate that taking advantage of lowered reinforcement ratios by utilizing the higher strength of MMFX steel is a definite possibility in reinforced concrete bridge decks. The bridge deck reinforced with 33 percent less MMFX steel developed the same load-carrying capacity as the deck reinforced with conventional Grade 60 steel. In addition, the same deck showed the same deflections at service load as the deck reinforced with Grade 60 steel.

Book excerpt: High-performance (HP) steel reinforcing bars are characterized by their high tensile strength and enhanced corrosion resistance in comparison to conventional ASTM A 615 Grade 60 steel. Use of HP steel in concrete bridges could lead to potential savings by reducing the amount of steel required based on its higher strength characteristics and expanding the service life of bridges due to its enhanced corrosion resistance. A commercially available steel know Micro-Composite Multi-Structural Formable (MMFX) steel which is conforming to ASTM A 1035, was selected for this study because of its high tensile strength and enhanced corrosion resistance. Comprehensive experimental and analytical programs were carried out to evaluate the mechanical properties of the HP steel bars, its bond characteristics, and the behavior of concrete bridge decks reinforced with HP steel. Research findings showed that HP steel used in this study exhibited much higher tensile strength than that of conventional Grade 60. In addition, the HP steel bars had much lower corrosion rate than Grade 60 bars. Bending HP steel bars reduce its ultimate strength and strain by 6 and 70 percent, respectively. However, when HP steel bent bars are bonded to concrete they develop their full stress-strain capacity. Bond test results indicated that a stress level up to 90 ksi can be developed in #8 HP steel bars without the use of transverse reinforcement. The use of transverse reinforcement increases the bond strength of HP steel reinforcing bars, consequently reaching stress levels in the bars up to 150 ksi. When possible, it is recommended to use a minimum amount of transverse reinforcement to confine spliced bars to ensure ductile behavior and provide warning prior to failure. Direct replacement of Grade 60 with HP steel bars in bridge decks is a conservative approach. However, reducing the amount of HP steel by 33 percent does not impair the ultimate-load carrying capacity or alter the serviceability behavior o.

Book excerpt: This research program develops and validates structural design guidelines and details for concrete bridge decks with corrosion-resistant reinforcing (CRR) bars. A two-phase experimental program was conducted where a control test set consistent with a typical Virginia Department of Transportation bridge deck design using Grade 60 steel (ASTM A615, f [subscript] y = 60 ksi) and epoxy-coated reinforcing steel was compared to deck slab specimens where Grade 60 is replaced with CRR bars. The experimental program was designed to evaluate how flexural performance at service and ultimate limit states are affected by a one-to-one replacement of Grade 60 with CRR bars, a reduction of concrete clear cover, and a reduction in rebar size. Structural analysis models were developed using Response 2000 in order to predict the CRR bridge deck moment-curvature and the moment-crack width relationships. Experimental trends proved to be consistent with the analytical results demonstrating the viability of Response 2000 as a design tool for reinforced concrete with high-strength and nonmetallic rebar without a defined yield plateau. For reduced bar size and clear cover (2.00 in instead 2.50 in), ASTM A1035 and UNS S32304 specimens proved to have similar deformability ratios and crack widths that comply with current AASHTO requirements, with as much as 36% less steel.

Book excerpt: Connections, closure pours, and joints in bridges are often sources of distress because of cracks and openings. Wide separation facilitates the penetration of harmful solutions that can lead to costly repairs. Cracks are caused by volumetric changes attributable to moisture and temperature and the application of service loads after the concrete has hardened. Poor bonding between the existing concrete and new concrete can lead to separation or opening. Wide cracks or openings within the material or at the interface and leaking joints allow the ingress of water and chemicals, causing damage to the bridge deck sections and the bridge substructure through corrosion of reinforcing steel, alkali-silica reactions, sulfate attack, and freeze-thaw damage. This study was designed to evaluate properties of fiber-reinforced concrete and cementitious composites in controlling cracking for bridge deck closure pours (i.e., link slabs). Plastic and hardened mixture properties of high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (HPFRC) were evaluated, with emphasis on deflection hardening, flexural toughness, and bond strength. A secondary objective was to evaluate various bond strength tests for use in prequalification or quality assurance of mixtures. The addition of a small amount of discontinuous fibers to a conventional concrete matrix minimizes cracking, but the size of these cracks still permits the intrusion of harmful solutions. High volumes of suitable fibers used in HPFRC produce multiple very tight cracks (

Book excerpt: Since the service life of concrete bridge decks designed by traditional procedures is often shorter than desired, their ability to withstand constant and heavy use in a variety of operating environments is of major concern. In this project, the relative performance of three bridge decks constructed with different concretes and reinforcing steel configurations was studied to help determine which deck offers the best performance over time. To achieve this objective, an array of strain and temperature instrumentation was embedded in each of the bridge decks prior to placing the deck concrete. The decks were tested under controlled live loads to characterize their structural behavior. The first set of such tests was performed immediately after the bridge decks were completed, and the second was conducted two years later. The long term performance of the three decks under environmental loads (notably, changes in temperature) was studied by continuously monitoring selected strain gages in each bridge, and by conducting periodic visual distress surveys and corrosion tests. In the data collected and analyzed from the live load tests and environmental response monitoring of the three decks, only subtle behavioral differences have been observed. While some aspects of the response have been found to statistically differ between bridges and over time, the significance of these differences remains uncertain, as the bridges are relatively young, and they only exhibit nominal signs of distress. The significance of these differences may become clear in the future, if substantial differences in deck durability and performance emerge over time. The visual distress surveys have found that the majority of the cracking that has occurred in the decks is near the integral abutments and that the Empirical deck had the most extensive cracking in this regard. The analysis presented herein generally serves as a baseline for the relative condition of the three bridges before prolonged demands from traffic and the environment. Should a follow-on project be initiated, data obtained from continued long-term monitoring and live load testing will likely provide a more complete body of evidence from which to ascertain which deck design offers superior performance. Relative to cost, initial expense for each deck was similar, thus the relative cost-to-benefit for the decks will be dependent on the service life that they offer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two-course bonded technique that has evolved from the continuing national and local interest in bridge deck durability was used in June 1974 to construct six bridge decks in Virginia. During the construction, which was the first phase of a five-year study on the construction, condition and performance of two-course decks, detailed observations were made of the activities used to construct the six two-course decks and two conventional single-lift decks, and data concerning the several concretes utilized in the construction of the decks were recorded. Based on comparisons of two-course and single-lift construction techniques the following conclusions are made. An overlay should be placed not sooner than two days after a base layer is placed. Light sandblasting of the base layer removes laitance that might adversely affect the bond between the base layer and overlay. A bonding layer of cement slurry should be broomed onto the base layer not further than 10 feet (3 meters) nor longer than 15 minutes ahead of the overlay placements. The same depth of clear concrete cover above the top reinforcing steel resulted from the two-course construction as from the single-lift technique. Using conventional equipment selected by the contractor, the construction activities proceeded in an orderly and satisfactory manner and coefficients of variation for the time intervals required to install the base layers and the overlays are comparable to values representing excellent control for single-lift construction. Although a 7-yd 3 (5.4 m3) truckload of concrete was screeded over 3 1/2 times as much surface area for an overlay as for a conventional single-lift deck, the average duration per truckload between the initial depositing and the completion of the screeding activity on the wearing surface was approximately the same in both the two-course and single-lift techniques. Not including texturing and curing activities, the average man-hours required to install concrete in the separate layers of the two-course decks was 33% greater than for conventional single-lift decks, but in terms of project days required for construction the two-course and single-lift techniques are equivalent. The total additional cost of the two-course technique is approximately 5% of the cost of the bridge superstructure. Three overlay concretes were selected for use as wearing courses on the two-course concrete decks on the basis of their protective qualities. A broad range of handling characteristics is represented by these concretes, which included a latex modified concrete, a high quality PCC, and a wire fiber reinforced concrete. The differences in these wearing course concretes did not significantly affect the placement activities, other than the batching, during their respective installations. In general the decks constructed by the two-course technique are equivalent to those resulting from conventional single-lift construction, however these successfully installed special wearing course concretes offer improved potential for deck performance.
