Book Synopsis Database Machine Performance: Modeling Methodologies and Evaluation Strategies by : Francesca Cesarini
Download or read book Database Machine Performance: Modeling Methodologies and Evaluation Strategies written by Francesca Cesarini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1987-06-24 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is focused on the performance evaluation of database machines, i.e., special-purpose architectures specifically meant to improve the efficiency of database applications. The topic is of primary interest because of the need to compare these systems among themselves and with traditional database management systems. The book gathers the experience of several European research groups in modeling and analyzing the database machine architectures they have proposed. It deals both with the main methodological issues and with the detailed analysis of some relevant problems. It also includes an extensive annotated bibliography with more than one hundred references and several keys for the access to the literature.

Book Synopsis Query Processing in Database Systems by : W. Kim
Download or read book Query Processing in Database Systems written by W. Kim and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an anthology of the results of research and development in database query processing during the past decade. The relational model of data provided tremendous impetus for research into query processing. Since a relational query does not specify access paths to the stored data, the database management system (DBMS) must provide an intelligent query-processing subsystem which will evaluate a number of potentially efficient strategies for processing the query and select the one that optimizes a given performance measure. The degree of sophistication of this subsystem, often called the optimizer, critically affects the performance of the DBMS. Research into query processing thus started has taken off in several directions during the past decade. The emergence of research into distributed databases has enormously complicated the tasks of the optimizer. In a distributed environment, the database may be partitioned into horizontal or vertical fragments of relations. Replicas of the fragments may be stored in different sites of a network and even migrate to other sites. The measure of performance of a query in a distributed system must include the communication cost between sites. To minimize communication costs for-queries involving multiple relations across multiple sites, optimizers may also have to consider semi-join techniques.

Book excerpt: Proceedings of the Third International Conference on Data and Knowledge Bases: Improving Usability and Responsiveness compiles papers presented at the Third International Conference on Data and Knowledge Bases held in Jerusalem, Israel on June 28-30, 1988. This book discusses the management system for graph-like documents, selection of processing strategies for different recursive queries, and supporting concurrent access to facts in logic programs. The design considerations for a Prolog database engine, experience with the domain algebra, and two level transaction management in a multiprocessor database machine are also described. This publication likewise covers the non-deterministic choice in Datalog and locally balanced compact Trie Hashing. This compilation is a good source for researchers and specialists of disciplines related to computer science.

Book Synopsis Research Directions in Database Security by : Teresa F. Lunt
Download or read book Research Directions in Database Security written by Teresa F. Lunt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many commercial and defense applications require a database system that protects data of different sensitivities while still allowing users of different clearances to access the system. This book is a collection of papers covering aspects of the emerging security technology for multilevel database systems. It contains reports on such landmark systems as SeaView, LDV, ASD, Secure Sybase, the UNISYS secure distributed system, and the secure entity-relationship system GTERM. Much of the research is concerned with the relational model, although security for the entity-relationship and object-oriented models of data are also discussed. Because the field is so new, it has been extremely difficult to learn about the research going on in this area, until now. This book will be invaluable to researchers and system designers in database systems and computer security. It will also be of interest to data users and custodians who are concerned with the security of their information. This book can also be used as a text for an advanced topics course on computer security in a computer science curriculum.
