Modern direction finders, capable of measuring elevation angles as well as azimuth angles on the components of multi-ray wavefields, have become powerful tools for research in ionospheric physics and HF radio propagation. The complexity of the problem of resolving closely-spaced rays requires the combined use of wide aperture antenna arrays, multichannel receiving systems and sophisticated digital processing techniques.

Both theory and technique are addressed, with more weight placed on the latter. This is achieved by providing in-depth studies on a number of central topics such as channel state information acquisition, user clustering, superposition coding, and successive interference cancellation. Four typical application scenarios are examined in detail, namely the stationary IoT device scenario, frequency division duplex-based low-mobility IoT device scenario, time-division duplex-based IoT device scenario, and high-mobility IoT device scenario. The comprehensive and systematic treatment of key techniques in massive access to the cellular IoT is one of the major features of the book, which is particularly suited for readers who are interested in finding practical solutions for the cellular IoT. As such, it will benefit researchers, engineers, and graduate students in the fields of information engineering, telecommunications engineering, computer engineering, etc.

Book excerpt: This book provides information regarding spectrum sharing between wireless systems, motivated by emerging new technologies. Readers will benefit from information about how to conduct research on the interference mitigation between IMT-Advanced and FSS. The author presents a deterministic analysis for interference to noise ratio (I/N), adjacent channel interference ratio (ACIR), field strength, and path loss propagation, in order to determine the separation distances in the co-channel interference (CCI) and adjacent channel Interference (ACI) scenarios. An analytical model is discussed, for the shielding mitigation technique based on the deterministic analysis of the propagation model. The shielding technique has been developed based on test bed measurements for evaluating the attenuation of the proposed materials. MatlabTM and Transfinite Visualyse ProTM have been used as simulation tools for the verification of the obtained results, whereas the IMT-Advanced parameters have been represented by Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) 802.16e.

Book excerpt: Electrical Engineering Adaptive Antennas for Wireless Communications In the past decade, the wireless communications community recognized adaptive antennas as a core technology that would help existing systems overcome problems related to spectrum efficiency and provide a vehicle to achieve the ambitious requirements of next-generation networks. The communications industry has already begun to develop adaptive antenna systems for commercial use and at the same time is working with standardization institutes around the world to produce adaptive antenna-friendly standards. Adaptive Antennas for Wireless Communications is a concise, detailed resource of information for all critical issues related to this technology and is compiled from the original published work of experts in the field. The extensive literature covers: * Historical and background aspects * Radio channel simulation techniques and characteristics * Adaptive algorithm performance under a variety of conditions * Adaptive antenna performance in different operational environments * Design and implementation issues * Experimental results * Other issues such as network planning and recent novel techniques Adaptive Antennas for Wireless Communications is a valuable reference for helping consultants, researchers, communications professionals, academics, and students gain an in-depth understanding of adaptive antenna technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was first published in 2004. In many applications, images, such as ultrasonic or X-ray signals, are recorded and then analyzed with digital or optical processors in order to extract information. Such processing requires the development of algorithms of great precision and sophistication. This book presents a unified treatment of the mathematical methods that underpin the various algorithms used in remote image formation. The author begins with a review of transform and filter theory. He then discusses two- and three-dimensional Fourier transform theory, the ambiguity function, image construction and reconstruction, tomography, baseband surveillance systems, and passive systems (where the signal source might be an earthquake or a galaxy). Information-theoretic methods in image formation are also covered, as are phase errors and phase noise. Throughout the book, practical applications illustrate theoretical concepts, and there are many homework problems. The book is aimed at graduate students of electrical engineering and computer science, and practitioners in industry.

Book excerpt: The two volumes of Signal Processing are based on lectures delivered during a six week program held at the IMA from June 27 to August 5, 1988. The first two weeks of the program dealt with general areas and methods of Signal Pro cessing. The problem areas included imaging and analysis of recognition, x-ray crystallography, radar and sonar, signal analysis and 1-D signal processing, speech, vision, and VLSI implementation. The methods discussed included harmonic anal ysis and wavelets, operator theory, algorithm complexity, filtering and estimation, and inverse scattering. The topics of weeks three and four were digital filter, VLSI implementation, and integrable circuit modelling. In week five the concentration was on robust and nonlinear control with aerospace applications, and in week six the emphasis was on problems in radar, sonar and medical imaging. Because of the large overlap between the various one-week and two-week seg ments of the program, we found it more convenient to divide the material somewhat differently. Part I deals with general signal process theory and Part II deals with (i) application of signal processing, (ii) control theory related themes. We are grateful to the scientific organizers: Tom Kailath (Chairman), Louis Aus lander, F. Alberto Grunbaum, J. William Helton, Pramod P. Khargonekar and Sanjoy K. Mitter. We are also grateful for the generous support given to the IMA program by the Office of Naval Research, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Army Research Office and the National Security Agency.
