Book excerpt: The conducted study is directed towards enhancements in performance assessment of highway bridges under a wide range of earthquake input shaking scenarios. Seismic response of the superstructure is highly influenced by the global bridge-ground characteristics as an integral system. Therefore, nonlinear representation of the bridge deck, columns, abutments, and foundation response are to be integrated within a unified framework. On this basis, a performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE) framework was extended and utilized to estimate the post-earthquake loss. To facilitate systematic execution of this analysis framework, a graphical user-interface was further developed and employed. For calibration purposes, a Finite Element (FE) model of an existing large heavily instrumented bridge system at Eureka, California (Samoa Channel Bridge) was developed. Calibration was undertaken based on the recorded earthquake response. Numerical simulations of the bridge model under seismic loading conditions were conducted. Simulation results show that the recorded data provide valuable insights to understand the seismic bridge response and to reliably estimate the damage. Using a practice-oriented pushover procedure, the response of a bridge subjected to liquefaction-induced lateral spreading was investigated. The analysis framework and representative results are presented, where the abutment lateral slope displacement is resisted by the entire bridge configuration. Permanent ground deformation induces longitudinal displacement on the abutment and consequently the entire bridge system. As such, the response of the bridge and its pile foundations were investigated and correlated with the imposed lateral spreading displacement. Overall, the novel contributions and findings are summarized as follows: (1) A bridge-ground seismic response computational analysis tool was further developed for routine practical applications; (2) In this tool, a PBEE framework was extended to handle multi-span bridge-ground systems within an integrated simulation environment; (3) Calibrated by recorded earthquake response, a framework was implemented for a representative large instrumented bridge-ground system in California to illustrate the involved response mechanisms and PBEE outcomes; (4) For response under lateral spreading considerations, a global bridge-ground systematic analysis framework was proposed and developed; (5) Patterned after an existing bridge in California, the framework was implemented with parametric studies addressing the procedure assumptions and potential retrofit bridge configurations.

Recent research and case history data suggest that three-dimensional deformation of the approach embankment can significantly influence the loads placed on the embedded foundations during a flow failure or lateral spreading event. For example, the 2010 Maule earthquake in Chile caused widespread lateral spreading in the soil surrounding the Mataquito river bridge, however, only insignificant structural damage was observed in the bridge itself. The discrepancy between the amount of soil deformation and structural damage suggests that design procedures for this load case that do not make adequate consideration for 3D soil deformation mechanisms may lead to overly conservative and expensive design solutions. Finite element models of the Mataquito river bridge are created using the OpenSees computational framework to investigate the reduction in foundation loads during lateral spreading implied by the minimal structural damage at the site. These models include beam on nonlinear Winkler foundation models, dynamic effective stress models of the bridge-foundation-soil system in plane strain, and 3D models of the southern bridge abutment, approach embankment, and surrounding soil. This numerical work focuses on the development of efficient element formulations and appropriate mesh configurations to minimize computational effort, and seeks to frame the load reduction mechanisms in the context of a simplified analysis procedure for the lateral spreading load case. The results of the numerical models for the Mataquito bridge, along with a parameter study conducted using a second set of 3D finite element models, indicate that consideration for the 3D geometry of the bridge site results in tangible reductions in foundation bending demands and abutment displacements compared to those returned by a plane strain description of the problem. This reduction increases as the depth of the liquefiable layer and the effective width of the approach embankment are decreased. An approach is proposed to estimate the reductions in abutment displacement and associated foundation bending demands for a given site geometry, and an existing simplified analysis procedure is modified to better consider the findings of this work.

Book excerpt: Deformations of a bridge approach embankment due to earthquake-induced liquefaction in the underlying soil can impose large loads or demands on the piled abutment and pile foundations embedded through the embankment. However, because the piled foundation is embedded through an embankment of finite width, the foundation may actually restrain the movement of the embankment and thus create smaller displacements and loads on the piled foundation than would be expected based on analyses that uncouple the embankment deformations from the bridge response. To investigate this phenomenon, three centrifuge tests were conducted. Each test modeled two identical bridge approach embankments underlain by liquefied soil, with a total of six embankments modeled. The embankments were constructed of dry sand and underlain by saturated loose sand, which liquefied during shaking. Each centrifuge test included one embankment with a pile group at its crest and one embankment without a pile group. Results from the centrifuge tests provided physical evidence that the resisting forces from piles can reduce the embankment displacements resulting from earthquake-induced liquefaction in the underlying soils. This beneficial mechanism, called "pile pinning," should be included in practice when analyzing or designing piled bridge abutments in liquefiable ground, as it could result in significant economic savings (e.g., soil remediation or foundation retrofit). Two tools to account for this pile-pinning effect in design are: (1) equivalent static analyses (ESA) and (2) non-linear deformation analyses (NDA). Both ESA and NDA were used to analyze these centrifuge tests, with the purpose of evaluating these tools' predictive capabilities. For these centrifuge tests, ESA significantly over-predicted displacements and demands on the piles, whereas NDA provided a better comparison (although still with a tendency to over-predict). The better predictive capability of NDA was attributed to several modeling capabilities not possible with ESA. The relative merits of ESA and NDA for current practice depend on how decisions in design may be affected. Future advances can be expected with NDA methods, including improvements in the constitutive models, numerical methods, and software usability. Future advances are unlikely to be realized with ESA methods given their inherent simplifications of the physical processes.

Book excerpt: Experiences from past earthquakes have shown that lateral spreading associated with liquefaction of cohesionless soils can be a cause of severe damage to bridge foundations. Large diameter extended pile shafts can be an effective bridge foundation choice for areas subjected to lateral spreading because they offer greater stiffness and strength relative to the magnitude of lateral spreading loads that can develop against them. A limited degree of plastic hinging below the ground surface may be allowable in design of extended pile shafts. Issues for design for extended pile shafts include: (a) how to estimate the demands due to superstructure inertia and lateral spreading in liquefied soils, and (b) how to combine these two loads in estimating the local and global inelastic demands on the structure. Studies of the response of pile foundations and pile-supported structures in liquefiable soils using physical models, numerical models, and case studies have provided the basis for a number of design recommendations. The guidance is, however, quite varied regarding how lateral spreading and superstructure inertial loads should be combined in design. To answer the above questions a series of Nonlinear Dynamic Finite Element Analyses (NDA) have been performed to investigate inelastic response of extended pile shafts subjected to liquefaction-induced lateral spreading, covering a range of soil, pile, and ground motion conditions. The results of NDA were first used to show that combined effects of lateral spreading and superstructure inertia produce larger demands than are produced by either loading case alone, such that the combined demand cannot be enveloped by analyzing the two load cases separately. The results were then used to evaluate current equivalent static analysis (ESA) method (Caltrans, 2008), with the relatively poor agreement illustrating the limitations of methods that do not combine the two loads. The results of NDA parametric study were then used to develop and calibrate an ESA procedure. The ESA procedure addresses both the nonliquefaction and liquefaction cases, and includes criteria that identify conditions which tend to produce excessive demands or collapse conditions. Finally, a series of three-dimensional (3D) Nonlinear Dynamic Finite Element Analyses (NDA) were performed to examine inelastic behavior of large diameter extended pile shafts subjected to earthquake shaking and liquefaction-induced lateral spreading. The purpose of these analyses was to evaluate the differences between 2D and 3D simulations, understand the source of any differences, and evaluate whether those differences would affect design recommendations for Equivalent Static Analysis (ESA).
