Book excerpt: In the Estes and Taylor (1964, 1966) 'detection' experiments, subjects (Ss) saw a brief array containing 'noise' letters plus one of two critical letters, and attempted to determine which critical letter appeared; accuracy decreased as the number of noise letters increased. This was interpreted by Estes and Taylor and by Rumelhart (1970) as demonstrating a limitation of perceptual capacity. However, the experiments involved confoundings: stimulus arrays with more letters were either larger in visual angle or involved greater inter-letter crowding, both of which factors are known to decrease letter perceptibility. Experiments I and II in this study were patterned after the Estes and Taylor paradigm, but controlled both angular size and crowding factors by means of specially designed stimulus arrays. In both experiments, Ss' performance decreased with increases in the number of letters, thus supporting limited-capacity models. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis attempts to explain the apparent link between how we navigate the world around us and the physical properties that define that world. Despite a number of works indicating the substantial effect of the layout of the environment - both as a whole and within a viewpoint - no work to date has directly attempted to address how and what physical properties shape our navigation through space. This research question is examined in the context of a direct relationship between the physical environment and our movement choices - an affordance. To test this idea, the question is approached from the ground up using a combination of spatial analysis, mathematical modeling, and behavioural analysis, to reveal that a small family of local perceptual variables, but particularly that of mean surface depth, is capable for accounting for much of our movements in space, even when the environment is largely disorganized. Using Factor Analysis (Chapter Two), three studies using data drawn from both artificial and real-world spaces reveal a critical link between the local perceptual characteristics of the environment and properties and the complexity of space lying outside the local perceptual space. Chapter Three explores the capacity of these specific local perceptual variables to guide navigation behaviour in a way that is consistent with the concept of an affordance. Across all approaches, the variable of mean surface depth is shown to both systematically relate to the layout of the world around us and guide our movement choices within that world. In establishing this affordance - Depth Afforded Navigation - a novel link between studies of local perception and the layout of space can be established and built upon in future work. This work not only sheds new light on how common patterns of navigation behaviour occur, but also allows the often disparate approaches (i.e., space syntax, isovist analysis, angular segment analysis, etc.) used to understand the role of space to be understood under one unifying model.

Book excerpt: The Perception of Multiple Objects describes a neurally inspired computational model of two-dimensional object recognition and spatial attention that can explain many characteristics of human visual perception. The model, called MORSEL (named for its ability to perform Multiple Object Recognition and attentional Selection), is unique in providing a broad and unified explanation for a wide range of experimental psychological data on visual perception and attention. Although it draws on existing theoretical perspectives from cognitive psychology, it is a fully mechanistic account, not just a functional-level theory. MORSEL has been trained to recognize letters and words in various positions on its "retina." Following training, it can also recognize several items at once, subject to capacity limitations. The model makes predictions about what sorts of information the visual system can process in parallel and what sorts must be processed serially. Through simulation experiments, chiefly in letter and word perception, MORSEL has been shown to account for a variety of psychological phenomena, including perceptual errors that arise when several items appear simultaneously in the visual field, facilitatory effects of context and redundant information, attentional phenomena, visual search performance, and behaviors exhibited by neurological patients with acquired dyslexia.
