The purpose of the study and the survey was to determine the perceived effectiveness on the advisory program in the school by both teachers and students. Chi square was used to analyze the 125 surveys collected to test the statistical dependence of the research questions posed in the surveys in regards to awareness of the purpose of the program, connectedness to advisor/advisee, opinion on time and topics covered in the program and whether or not the topics and lessons are actually carried through in particular advisory. The findings of this study recommend that though students and teachers feel they have enough time to work in advisory, they still do not feel that they are making the connections that are the primary goal of the advisory program. They feel the need for more focus on post-secondary preparation in advisory as well. This study will delve deeper into these questions and attempt to create a plan to help create an advisory that will be beneficial to all involved.

Book excerpt: In one high school, an advisory program was put into place to promote students' sense of belonging as a main goal. However, the effectiveness of this program had not been evaluated, and research was needed for a better understanding of program outcomes. The purpose of this mixed methods case study was to evaluate one high school advisory program with a special focus on the program's effect on the students' sense of belonging. Tinto's model of student retention provided the theoretical foundation for this study. The research questions focused on perceptions of the process and outcomes of the advisory program from the perspectives of 9th and 10th grade advisees, 12th grade assistant advisors, and teacher-advisors. Two hundred fourteen 9th and 10th grade advisees, 41 12th grade assistant advisors, and 14 teacher advisors completed surveys. Responses to the qualitative open-ended questions on the survey were analyzed using typological analysis, including both predetermined and inductive categories. Findings indicated that the advisees benefited from the interaction with advisors, wanted more time for advisory, and were concerned about academics. Assistant advisors requested larger roles in the program. Advisors felt that the advisees benefited from the interaction of being part of a group and recommended that the curriculum needed continuous improvement. Responses to the quantitative Likert style questions on the survey rating program goals were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results indicated that advisees agreed that all goals were being met. Recommendations include giving the 12th grade assistant advisors larger roles, providing more frequent or longer advisory meetings, and engagement in continuous revision of the curriculum. Social change implications are effective advisory programs may lead to better overall success in high school, thus decreasing dropout rates.

Book excerpt: A review of the literature regarding high school dropout rates and efforts to decrease student failure reveal that both the reasons for students’ decisions to drop out and the efforts by schools and districts to reduce these rates are complex. Many stakeholders point to student dropout rates as evidence of the failure of the American education system, and have proposed various reform measures, though significant reform has yet to be realized. An understanding of the complexity of the situation is required in order for schools to more successfully support students in school completion and diploma acquisition. Importantly, schools must recognize that the changes needed to increase student success must happen within the school systems, rather than in the lives of students and families outside of schools. The purpose of this study was to investigate students’, parents’ and school staff members’ perceptions of the elements or characteristics of a satellite high school that were most beneficial and least beneficial in assisting students with obtaining a high school diploma, in order to identify practices and interventions that support student success. The researcher believed that the collective perspective of students, parents, and their teachers and staff would be relevant for school districts in improving structures and practices to assist students in remaining in school and earning their high school diplomas. Through a qualitative research study design that included three homogeneous focus group interviews of students, their parents, and the satellite school staff, involving a total of twenty participants, the researcher was able to collect data related to perceptions of the current satellite high school experience. After coding the data collected, the researcher identified major themes related to components of the satellite high school that students and their families perceived as leading to their success in finishing high school and earning a diploma. The researcher recommended the following: (1) changes to current school structures to reflect more diverse organizational and administrative models adapted to address challenges students face and which are not adequately addressed in a traditional school environment; (2) increased, targeted professional development for school staff working in alternative school environments providing training in specific strategies and supports designed to making connections and developing positive, supportive relationships with students; (3) the creation of a satellite high school advisory board to include representatives from all stakeholder groups to develop a continuous cycle of program improvement for the satellite high school which incorporates essential feedback all stakeholders; (4) additional research involving similar stakeholder groups from other public school districts to assess the extent to which the same or similar findings would be uncovered. These recommendations are meant to inform school districts and school leaders as they work to increase their efforts to make improvements to their school structures and organizations to provide opportunities for students at risk of dropping out to meet with educational success as measured by the completion of the high school diploma.

While hope has been studied from a variety of perceptions and works have been published reflecting various fields such as social science and health care, little has been done to further understand how hope functions in student academic success through school counselors' perceptions. This qualitative-exploratory research study seeks to understand the following research question: How is hope generated in students from the perceptions of school counselors? Using grounded theory method of analysis, three major themes were found: communication, interactions, and connection. Three dominant categories were identified under the communication theme: listening, observing, and discussing. Moreover, three dominant categories were identified under the interactions theme: practicing, reflecting, and planning. Finally, three dominant categories were identified under the connection theme: sharing, feeling, and grasping/recreating. Participants' stories reflected that effective communication, genuine interactions, and real-life connection were needed for students to generate and keep hope alive in their academic world. This study suggests that hope can be generated in students when students are willing to listen to new information, observe hopeful behaviors and positive events, and discuss or talk about their emotions and dreams. Moreover, results suggest that hope can be kept alive through ongoing interactions where students practice hopeful attitudes and behaviors, reflect on past experiences, learn from the past negative and positive events, and develop plans for themselves. Findings also suggest that hope can be maintained when students find connections between their inner and outer world. Finally, findings suggest that for students to generate new hope and continue to be hopeful in their lives, they need to have the interest and opportunity to share their own stories with someone, the feeling of ongoing support, and the sense of control where they believe they have the ability to recreate their own meanings toward their academic world. This research recommends to parents, educators, leaders, and school counselors that it is crucial to explicitly impart hope to students. Educational leaders and policymakers should consider implementing a hope curriculum based on the findings, particularly to high school students who feel hopeless. However, helping students build a hopeful mind should start as early as the elementary level.

While the demand for online learning is on the rise, many U.S. students lack adequate Internet connectivity to have a successful online learning experience. Connectivity issues, particularly when they impact audio, can cause students to tune out or even drop out of online learning. This is problematic for online schools and course providers who often have no control over the speed of a student’s home Internet connection. Online schools also have to balance student perceptions, which have been linked to their achievement. This mixed methods study examines the role of Internet connectivity on the perceptions of highly gifted students on the quality of their fully online English course on six domains: (a) appeal, (b) challenge, (c) choice, (d) meaningfulness, (e) self-efficacy, and (f) communication. In this study, highly gifted students who attended an online public school (N=19) that utilizes synchronous and asynchronous learning methods reported their perceptions on the six domains of online course quality and also their Internet downloads speed, which were used to divide them into two groups - low and high Internet download speeds. The results of the quantitative survey, a modified version of the Student Perceptions of Classroom Quality (Gentry & Owen, 2004; Gentry & Springer, 2002), were then analyzed based on the two independent groups. No statistically significant difference was found in student perceptions on any of the six domains based on the participant’s Internet download speed. This finding may be limited based on the small sample size available for data analysis in this study. Focus groups supported the findings of the statistical analysis. A total of 12 themes emerged from the focus groups to help explain the students' perceptions of their online courses. An additional two themes were identified as common technical issues caused by Internet connectivity in online learning and three themes related to troubleshooting technical issues. Book excerpt: This study examines the influences on and outcomes of relationships between approximately 600 grade 10 and 11 students and 55 faculty members in an advisory program at a medium-sized high school in suburban New England. Using embedded mixed methods, surveys containing closed-ended and open-ended questions were administered to students and faculty to examine advisory typology characteristics as well as the level and type of social support received by students through the advisory program. Analysis of the quantitative findings indicated students received social support from both faculty advisors and advisory classmates. Emotional support was perceived most often from both faculty advisor and student advisee perspectives. A variety of advisory typology characteristics were reported in each advisory groups. Characteristics associated with skill and advocacy typologies were most prevalent. Statistically significant correlations were found between advisory typologies and social support constructs. Advisory typology characteristics were found to predict certain social supports with statistical significance in multiple regression analyses. Confounding variables identified through qualitative analyses such as program logistics and group dynamics should be examined in future research. The findings can be used to inform the development of innovative advisory programs that provide specific social support to students through the cultivation of positive student-teacher and student-student relationships.
