Book excerpt: The evolution of student accountability has led some researchers to suggest the increase of teacher attrition is tied to the increase of accountability. Although some may suggest the teacher attrition rate is tied to accountability, this study explored the relationship of elementary teacher morale and the leadership of elementary principals and how that leadership may play a role in teacher morale and a possible factor in the teacher attrition. While many quantitative studies have been conducted on teacher morale and principal behaviors, this study analyzed principal behaviors through the lens of transformational leadership, gathering data in a qualitative method through individual teacher and administrator interviews. The findings, implications and recommendations of this study are a result of the data that were gathered through individual interviews. There were four common positive themes which principals and teachers believed impacted teacher morale in a positive manner including teacher support, teacher feedback, shared leadership and creating a family culture. There were five common themes principals and teachers believed to have a negative impact on teacher morale including negativity, lack of support, change or new initiatives, valuing teachers and common core curriculum. Additional emergent themes were also identified and discussed in the conclusions of this study. The findings are intended to change the leadership approach of principals in order to increase teacher morale and student achievement and decrease teacher attrition.

McGuire and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Purpose. The purpose of this investigation of teacher's perceptions of principal's leadership behavior and student achievement (reading) was to explore those factors of principal's leader behaviors that differentiate low achieving and high achieving schools as perceived by teachers. Sample. Two hundred sixty-one teachers in seven selected northeast Ohio school district and seventeen buildings participated in this study. Teachers in this study had at least three years of experience and one or more years of supervision from the principals whose leadership behavior they described. Instrument. The revised Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire Form XII was used. This instrument measured only four subscales, consideration Initiating Structure, Persuasion and Superior Orientation. This instrument was used to explore answer to five research questions. Findings. The study results did not support the premise that the leader behavior task structure differentiated effective from ineffective schools. Teachers in both groups of schools perceived that principals exhibited this characteristic. However, the results revealed that the leader behavior, consideration, did differ at the .05 level of significance as perceived by teachers between principals in high and low achieving schools. The data also showed that discrepancy existed between principals self perception and teacher perceptions of the leader behavior, superior orientation at the .05 level of significance. The data also revealed that the level of staff involvement, such as awareness, implementation, and curricular focus was more evident in low achieving than in high achieving schools. Conclusion. The investigation concluded that there is substantial need for further exploration of the leadership variable. An important recommendation is that additional research be initiated using the LBDQ and other research instruments as a strategy to consistently operationalize the leadership characteristics of Effective Schools Movement.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine how the participants perceived their principal's transformational and transactional leadership style and whether differences existed in their perceptions based on the demographic variables of age, gender, experience, educational attainment and ethnicity. Transformational leaders were considered influential, change agents who motivated teachers to work collaboratively as a team to achieve defined goals. On the other hand, transactional leaders developed impersonal relationships and motivated teachers according to their personal self-interest. They focused on social and economic exchanges, using contingent rewards to reinforce positive behaviors and administered punishment to reform negative behaviors. One hundred and thirteen participants from six elementary schools participated in this study. The Multi-Leadership Questionnaire was used to collect data. Cronbach alpha was used to establish internal reliability consistency of the instrument. The data were analyzed using mean scores, percentages, chi-square, t-test and ANOVA. The research findings indicated that perception scores at both school levels were higher for transformational leadership than transactional leadership. According to the mean score interpretation (Table 2) and the participants' mean scores, 92.9 % of participants perceived their principal as fairly often a transformational leader and 7.1% of participants perceived their principal as frequently a transformational leader. Ironically, 100% of participants perceived their principal as sometimes a transactional leader. The research findings further indicated that overall, teachers at both levels perceived their principal as fairly often a transformational leader and sometimes a transactional leader. Based on the demographic findings, an ANOVA revealed statistically significant differences in teachers' perceptions of their principal's transformational leadership style based on years of experience. Participants with more years of experience perceived their principal with significantly higher mean scores than those with fewer years of experience. Recommendations include: (a) conducting further research to determine the impact that principals' leadership style have on student performance from a national perspective, (b) conducting a Longitudinal Research study to determine the impact that leadership styles have on student performance, and (c) exploring leadership styles extensively to identify the leadership traits exhibited by both public and private elementary school principals.

Book excerpt: In this research, elementary school principals' instructional leadership behavior was evaluated based on the perceptions of elementary school teachers. The research is believed to contribute to the development of instructional leadership behavior of elementary school principals for the development of school organization. A "semi-structured interview technique", one of the qualitative research methods in the literature was used in the research. The study group was made up of elementary school teachers working in Nigde, Turkey, during the 2008-2009 academic year. For the study sample, one teacher from each school was selected at random, resulting in group of twenty elementary school teachers. Based on the content analysis, five themes of instructional leadership behavior were found. These themes are: (1) determination of the school's purpose; (2) management of instruction; (3) evaluation of students; (4) support to teachers; and (5) creation of a regular learning-teaching environment.
