Book excerpt: This study was designed to examine novice special education teachers' perceptions on the effectiveness of pre-service training. The primary focus aimed to determine perceptions of novice special education teachers regarding the overall quality of pre-service special education certification programs, as well as the perceptions of novice special education teachers regarding the aspects of the special education training programs that could be improved in order to increase the overall quality of the certification experience. Six school districts in central and northeastern Pennsylvania participated in the study. Fourteen novice special educators began the online survey composed of demographic, Likert-scale, and open-ended questions, with twelve completing the study. Of the twelve who completed the study, five volunteered to participate in an interview. The study revealed that overall, novice special education teachers felt adequately prepared in the areas of teaching, assessment, professional credentials and employment, professional development, professional colleagues, para-educations, parents and families, and case management; however, there is still room for improvements to be made in pre-service training programs. Data collected from the open-ended and interview questions supported the perception that novice special education teachers felt they may need more training to handle special education paperwork, as well as to provide support in specific areas of special education which they did not feel sufficiently trained, such as life skills support, emotional support or hearing/vision support. Findings also suggested that teacher preparation programs could include more field experiences throughout the duration of the program in a variety of areas and settings.

Where once there existed only higher education preparation programs, today there are alternative routes to preparation and certification. The purpose of this study was to identify the perceptions and feelings of professional preparedness of alternatively certified special education teachers, as reflected in their initial years of practice. This study uses a mixed-methods research design and includes a survey and semi-structured interviews as the methodologies of choice. Findings from this study are: (1) novice traditionally certified teachers felt more thoroughly prepared to teach in the theoretical aspects of the profession (student learning pace, teaching to student multiple modalities, and student pedagogical knowledge) and making a direct positive impact on student learning and development; (2) novice alternatively certified novice teachers felt more prepared for the practical impact to student learning of the profession (multiple methods of assessment, instructional strategies, teaching a specialized curriculum, and using a core curriculum); and (3) overall, both sets of teachers felt that their initial program prepared them with the basic knowledge of the profession

Book excerpt: A disproportionate number of Black students with disabilities experience exclusionary discipline practices (e.g., suspensions and expulsions) in K-12 public schools. This disparity persists, regardless of the severity of identified problem behavior, the school's average socio-economic status, or the type of public school attended. Given that teacher education programs (TEPs) are pivotal training grounds for pedagogical and philosophical formation, it is crucial for TEPs to demonstrate accountability for building critical consciousness of the factors that produce and perpetuate this disparity. Gaining a fuller understanding of how pre-service special education teachers craft their perceptions of problem behavior during their TEPs may help to rectify this problem. This post-intentional phenomenological study explores the ways pre-service special education teachers from a special education teacher education program in the State of Illinois craft their perceptions of problem behavior and how social identity influences these perceptions. Participants (n = 38) completed three tasks: 1. Social Identity Wheel; 2. Aspects of Identity Questionnaire-IV; and 3. Video Elicitation. Following the three activities, I randomly selected six participants (n = 6) to sit with me for semi-structured interviews. Findings showed a patchwork of ways perception of problem behavior is crafted - the primary way stemming from personal childhood experiences. The influence of social identity on perception was inconclusive. Results have implications for special education teacher educators who are committed to complying with Illinois State Board of Education's (ISBE) newly adopted Culturally Responsive Teaching and Leading Standards for teacher education programs. Results also have implications for school personnel interested in following the recently released guidance from the Department of Education that helps public K-12 schools avoid discriminatory use of discipline against students with disabilities.

The results indicated that the participants (a) had a solid knowledge based related to best practices, (b) highlighted Cooperative Learning, Differentiated Instruction, Collaboration, and Proactive/Positive Behavior Management as the most effective practices (c) felt that the exposure of pre-service teachers, trained in best practices, to classroom teachers, had a positive impact on instruction, and (d) felt that interpersonal skills were strengthened as a result of the PDS.

Book excerpt: There is currently a gap in research related to the potential effects of student race on school consultation and teacher help seeking behavior. It is well documented in the existing research that racial/ethnic bias exists in education at many levels. These biases lead to negative systemic effects such as achievement gaps, disproportionality in discipline, and disproportionality in special education referrals. Biases can also have negative effects on classroom interactions between teachers and students. It seems plausible that if biases exist in other domains of education, that they may also exist in the school consultation process. The purpose of the current study is to fill the gap in the school consultation literature by evaluating pre-service teacher’s ratings of situation severity and their likelihood to seek assistance. Participants (n= 179) were shown 4 vignettes depicting various classroom scenarios and asked to rate both situation severity and their likelihood to seek assistance. Participants were randomized to consider either white sounding names or black sounding names within the vignettes. Findings from this study indicate that perceived student race did not have a significant effect on pre-service teachers’ ratings of situation severity and ratings of situation severity. These findings provide insight into the help seeking behaviors of pre-service teachers. Additionally, results have implications for graduate training in consultation. Limitations to this study as well as recommendations for future research in this area are discussed..

Book excerpt: This qualitative study was designed to identify and explore the preservice technology training experiences of novice teachers and examine their perceptions of how well their teacher preparation program prepared them with the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfill the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS·T). Data were collected by following an instrumental case study design utilizing semi-structured interviews, documents, and field notes. Simultaneous collection and analysis of the data helped the researcher to create a deeper understanding of the technology training experiences of novice teachers. The findings of this study revealed that novice teachers believe there was a lack of emphasis on technology integration in their teacher preparation program outside of the one required technology course. They expressed a need for technology training to be integrated across the curriculum. They wanted to be provided with authentic learning experiences so they could connect the theory to the practice in relation to technology integration. They wanted more time to practice, reflect, and plan student-centered, technology-rich lessons and they wanted to see all teacher education faculty modeling technology so connections could be made between the technology tools and the appropriate uses of these tools within their content areas. Last, they believe future preservice teachers need more hands-on experiences in creating student-centered, technology-rich lessons, not just within the one required technology course, but throughout their teacher preparation program. Furthermore, 90 percent of the participants expressed a need for more exposure to the technology standards. They stated the only place they were exposed to these technology standards was in the one required technology course and felt that one semester was not enough exposure for them to learn how to implement each of the standards with confidence. All stated they would have liked to have seen all faculty members throughout the teacher preparation program incorporate these technology standards into their teaching, so they would have been provided with adequate exposure to the technology standards.
