Three major research questions dealt with guitar use, guitar training, and clinicians' confidence using the guitar in clinical practice. A quasi-random sample of 1000 board-certified music therapists were invited to complete an online questionnaire with 27 questions in the areas of guitar use, guitar training and experience, and the importance of 28 specific skills. One hundred fifty music therapists (n = 150) responded. Major findings include: (1) clinicians appear to use the guitar frequently and, on average, see guitar skills as more important than piano and percussion skills; (2) respondents tended to feel better prepared when they had more than one semester of guitar training and many expressed a desire for more guitar training, specifically in the areas of stylistic playing and improvisation; (3) respondents who were trained in guitar by music therapy faculty felt their training was more clinically relevant than those trained by non-music therapy faculty; (4) music therapists are generally confident in their guitar skills and the factors that predict high confidence levels need to be further explored and; (5) a majority of music therapists enter their academic programs with little or no guitar experience and this appears to be especially true for females. Discussion includes the relationship of these results to previous research, implications for training and practice, and recommendations for further research.

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of music assisted systematic desensitization (MASD) on guitar competency, observed anxiety, and self-perception of anxiety during guitar performance with music therapy and music education students. Students were divided into an experimental and control group. The experimental group received two sessions of (MASD) after the first guitar performance and the control group received no intervention. Guitar performances were evaluated for level of competency, level of observed anxiety, and self-perception of anxiety. Statistical comparisons of both groups indicate that there was a significant difference between the guitar competency scores of the two groups (p = .051), with greater gains on guitar competency made by the experimental group. No statistical difference was found between groups on the level of observed anxiety or self-perception of anxiety. Subsequent analysis indicates that the experimental group had significantly lower anxiety from the first to second guitar performance (p = .037) while the control group did not (p = .477). The control group, however, had a significant decrease in level of perceived anxiety from the first to second guitar performance (p = .017) while the experimental group approached significance (p = .15). The secondary purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the experimental subject's participation in MASD with guitar competency evaluations, observed anxiety, and self-perception of anxiety during the guitar performances. Graphic analysis of participants observed responses during MASD are presented within six case studies. Clinical implications of the results and guidelines for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Research indicates that therapeutic interventions designed to target levels of self-efficacy serve useful for college students who wish to pursue helping professions in the role of counselor, therapist, or nurse. Group music therapy targeting self-efficacy goals with undergraduates has rarely been researched. In this study, two undergraduate students at a southwestern Virginia university participated in a music therapy intervention. The General Self-Efficacy Scale and the Outcome Rating Scale were used to determine whether perceived levels of self-efficacy changed throughout the course of the intervention. A mixed methods design was used to compare the different phases of data collection and to determine any relationships between the quantitative and qualitative data collected. No significant differences were found between pretest and posttest scores of the two quantitative measures. The qualitative data indicated that the subjects experienced changes in their perceptions of music therapy, especially concerning their understanding of personal benefits from music therapy, and in levels of self-confidence. The subjects also showed an increase in positive feeling states as they became familiar with the music therapy process. Implications for further research are discussed.
