Book excerpt: This examination of the associate degree and its role within community college education in the United States begins with a historical perspective on the evolution of the associate degree since the beginning of the 20th century. Chapter II reviews the literature concerning the diversity of the associate degree and the ways in which it is perceived and evaluated and stresses the need for general education as an important aspect of degree requirements. Chapter III presents responses from representatives of community colleges, high schools, universities, professional associations and the business community to a survey on the status of the associate degree, revealing a perceived need for change in such areas as the structure of the degree, coursework, general education requirements, specific competencies, computer courses, articulated programs, and better qualified high technology teachers. Chapter IV provides viewpoints from state higher education officers, representatives of educational associations, professors of higher education, principals, counselors, faculty, and administrators regarding the function and operation of the associate degree. Finally, chapter V raises issues drawn from a report by the Task Force for the Redefinition of the Associate Degree. Appendices list task force members and survey respondents. (HB)

This book was released on 2015 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Survey data were collected from a purposeful sample of 75 participants at a large community college in Texas from the 2015 academic year. Interviews were conducted with 21 participants to obtain instructor perceptions of ready-to-teach courses in regard to pedagogy and content. Quantitative data were analyzed using frequencies and percentages. The qualitative data was analyzed using an inductive coding process revealing 3 major categories: (a) general perceptions about pedagogy in regard to ready-to-teach courses, (b) general perceptions about content in regard to ready-to-teach courses, and (c) the similarities and differences of perceptions of ready-to-teach instructors identified by their employment status - adjunct or full-time. The findings of this study show that the majority of both adjunct and full-time instructor participants were receptive to ready-to-teach courses, but each group had their own concerns about how best to implement ready-to-teach courses.

Download or read book Community College Teacher Preparation for Diverse Geographies written by Mark M. D'Amico and published by IAP. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community colleges serve as the open door to higher education for marginalized, place bound, and/or financially challenged students and communities. One of the key ways marginalization occurs in diverse geographies is through access limitations: access to affordable postsecondary education, access to curricula that lead to viable professions, access to diverse educational role models, and access to employment opportunities that can sustain communities. This underscores the importance of understanding “place” when addressing access and equity in higher education and the role of community colleges. The discussion of access and equity through the community college has implications for teacher education. Considering the documented importance of having a diverse teacher workforce in K-12 schools and the current mismatch between the diversity of students and the teachers in their schools, community colleges have a significant role to play. This book explores many topics related to the community college role in K-12 teacher education, including the community college mission, the policy landscape, partnerships, the transfer function, the community college baccalaureate, and others. Throughout the volume, the authors explore implications of access, equity, and geography and conclude with recommendations to guide future research and practice.
