The community college, with its great number, openness to nontraditional students, and key role in workforce development, is poised to become a more prominent contributor to America's success in the new economy. However, new technologies, reduced budgets, and higher levels of accountability are adding to the challenges facing community colleges. These new challenges have brought about the need for a different kind of educational leader, one who can manage the needs of a diverse group of stakeholders, empower others to accept responsibility, and get results without being autocratic. Such leaders are known as transformational leaders. In contrast, transactional leaders focus on the efficient running of the system within the context of existing organizational constraints. Transformational leaders are compared with transactional leaders in this investigation. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between transformational leadership factors, transactional leadership factors, and measures of community college performance. Forty-six North American community colleges participated in the study. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used for this investigation. Information on the leadership behaviors of college presidents was collected using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. Information on college effectiveness was collected using the Institutional Performance Survey. Both leadership and effectiveness data were based on faculty perceptions at the respective colleges. The relationship between presidential leadership and college effectiveness was evaluated using multiple regression analysis. A subset of presidents in the study was interviewed to achieve a better understanding of the social complexities associated with community college leadership. Transformational leadership was shown to be a better predictor of organizational effectiveness than transactional leadership for this sample. Based on the interviews, transformational presidents rely more on strong personal convictions, open communication, and trust to establish and articulate their vision than do their transactional counterparts. Leadership behaviors of the president predict only a portion of the overall performance of a college. Many other factors contribute to college performance, including the culture of the college and the conditions under which a leader assumes the presidency.

Book excerpt: This study investigated the shared, lived experience of graduates participating in a Grow-Your-Own (GYO) leadership development program at a comprehensive community college with several campuses and educational centers. There is a noted, growing shortage of talented community college leaders needed to address the complex challenges faced by community colleges across the country. This leadership shortage is attributed to an increased number of retirements among community college leaders and a lack of community college leadership development through either university doctoral programs or national professional associations. With GYOs identified as the preferred method of developing emerging community college leaders, it is important to understand the lived experience of participants in GYO programs. The study used an inductive approach to gain a deeper understanding of the phenomenon. From data analysis, three themes emerged to describe the shared lived experience of GYO program participants, including: (a) the value of connectedness, which participants expressed as "being a part of"; (b) understanding how leaders should be developed; and, (c) how participants perceived the impact of their leadership role on college processes, students, and subordinates. At the very center of the phenomenon under study was the essence--connections--which guided policy and practice recommendations. This essence of connections was explored through participants' connection to: (a) colleagues, college leaders, and the institution; (b) the GYO program and how participants perceived and connected to their personal development; and, (c) participants' ability to impact others within the institution. Concluding the study, two inferences were suggested: (a) GYO program structure may assume recruiting participants with a requisite level of confidence needed to lead within the community college; and, (b) an individual's perception of leadership considers a leaders' ability to move projects through the college's internal system. Recommendations for practice include the development of programming dedicated to leaders with more than 10 years of leadership experience and the integration of programming to develop, cultivate, and maintain relationships into the GYO curriculum. Policy recommendations included the development of degree programs or coursework on community college leadership at the university level and implementation of community college GYO programs to address the leadership gap.

Academic leaders of post-secondary institutions, in particular community colleges, have encountered this shift in society's view of the value of a college degree, and now see a demand for greater skills and employability within the workforce. For academic leaders to meet these new expectations, an understanding of leadership styles, focused on the characterization of their self-efficacies and a knowledge of the institutional role expectations is needed to lead during times of uncertainty and change. The study employs an explanatory single case design to establish to what extent an academic leader's perception of their leadership practices, self-efficacy, and institutional role expectations influence change. Defining the role of the academic leader in higher educational institutions will enable community colleges to remain sustainable and competitive in unparalleled economic and societal times. The participants of the study are individuals with the titles of dean within the academic affairs division from a selected two-year public community college in the Northeastern region of the United States. The study will employ Bolman and Deal's Leadership Orientation Survey (Bolman, n.d.) to first identify the leadership orientation practices of the selected academic leaders, followed by semi-structured interviews to provide a deeper, more detailed data. Bogdan and Biklen (2007) explained that interviews generate "rich data filled with words that revel the respondents' perspective" (p.96), affording the interviewer the ability to gain a "general understanding of the range of perspectives on the subject" (p.96). The significance of the study will provide academic leaders and senior community college administration an understanding of the relationship of the role of leadership, its practice and self-efficacy and the perspective necessary for academic leaders to offer a direction for change.

Book excerpt: The problem addressed in this study was that of the challenges that Ohio community colleges have been experiencing in terms of student attrition, the cost of instruction, the time to earn a degree being reduced, and changing academic outcomes for community college graduates are putting a strain on the community college system and further taking a toll on the morale of the people that work for them. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the degree to which the two variables of communication, both content and style, and leadership style, both task and relational, significantly predict the level of job satisfaction maintained by employees of community colleges in the State of Ohio. The research questions were 1) What is the relationship between communication, leadership styles, and job satisfaction among employees of community colleges in Ohio?, 2) Do the variables of communication and leadership style predict job satisfaction among employees of community colleges of Ohio?, and 3) Do communication, leadership style, and job satisfaction significantly differ by the demographic groups of age, gender, educational level, and job type among Ohio community college employees? Two Ohio community colleges participated in the survey consisting of a total of 54 items and was tabulated by a program called Qualtrics and there was 220 participants in this study. The results demonstrated that there was a statistically significant positive correlation among communication content and style, and leadership task and relational style and job satisfaction. Further, there was a statistically significant regression model indicated between the predictor variables of communication content, communication style, leadership task style, and leadership relational style with job satisfaction. Demographic analysis demonstrated that men and women both are not that dissimilar with regard to their response to communication and leadership with regard to job satisfaction. It was further discovered that the age group of 35 to 44 had no statistically significant correlations with any of the independent variables and job satisfaction and that there were no differences among the categories for educational level attainment with respect to the independent variables. Further, there was a statistically significant positive correlation with the independent variables and job satisfaction and job type. Communication and leadership can be leveraged positively by organizations to enhance job satisfaction which in turn leads to increased productivity.
