Book excerpt: "This quantitative study proposed to answer the following question: What are the similarities and differences in maternal experiences and perceptions in regard to their children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) between the United States and Japan? A total of 96 mothers of children with ASD participated in this study. In all, 47 were recruited from North Carolina in the US and 49 were from Osaka, Japan. Surveys with 5-likert-scale questions were used to collect quantitative data. Survey responses were analyzed by using two-sample independent t-tests to compare the difference between the means of two independent groups (American and Japanese mothers). The results indicated that overall both Japanese and American mothers experienced stress and physical and emotional fatigue while little support was available from people outside of the family. It is also shown that more Japanese mothers experience a caregiving burden related to social stigma or rejection than do US mothers, experience more difficulties in their social relationships, and feel more socially isolated than American mothers."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: A gap exists in the literature regarding the needs, concerns, and overall experiences of Arab American parents of children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (Al Khatib, 2017; Goforth, 2011; Haboush, 2007). This study explored the experiences of five Arab American mothers of children with ASD. A qualitative interview approach, utilizing in-depth interviews, was used in order to investigate Arab American parents experiences of caring for children with ASD, their cultural beliefs and understandings of their childrens ASD, and their concerns and needs regarding their children. Six themes emerged from the interview data, which offered insight into Arab American parents unique experiences of caring for a child with ASD, including (1) parents journeys toward the acceptance of the diagnosis of ASD, (2) beliefs about the cause of autism, (3) concerns, (4) needs, (5) coping techniques, and (6) unanticipated positive effects. Findings of this study and aspects related to Arab cultural beliefs with the ASD diagnostic process are discussed in detail, as well as implications of the findings for the field of special education and recommendation for future research.

Book excerpt: Security of Attachment and the Social Development of Cognition investigates how children's security of attachment in infancy is related to various aspects of their cognitive development over the preschool years. The book thus constitutes an ambitious attempt to build bridges between the domains of social and cognitive development, and as such addresses issues which are of increasing interest to developmental psychologists. In the first two chapters, Meins outlines Bowlby's attachment theory and the research which it has inspired, and develops the theme of a secure attachment relationship providing children with a sense of themselves as effective agents in their interactions with the world (self-efficacy). The next five chapters describe a longitudinal study of a sample of children whose security of attachment was assessed in infancy. Security-related differences are reported in the areas of object/person permanence, language acquisition, symbolic play, maternal tutoring and theory of mind, but no differences were found in general cognitive ability. Meins argues that the wide-ranging advantages enjoyed by the securely attached children are best explained in terms of their greater self-efficacy and social flexibility, nurtured by a particular kind of early infant-mother interaction. This book's major contribution is in its approach to explaining why securely attached children may be more self-effective and flexible in social interactions. Meins attempts to account for these differences within a Vygotskian framework, focusing on the secure dyad's greater ability to function within the zone of proximal development. She suggests that a mother's mind-mindedness (the propensity to treat one's infant as an individual with a mind) is an important factor in determining her ability to interact sensitively with her child. In the final chapter, Meins considers how the Vygotskian approach can complement and extend existing theories of attachment, and suggests some ways in which future research might address outstanding questions in this rapidly advancing field.

Book excerpt: This dissertation reports on the results of a qualitative investigation of the experiences of mothers whose children with autism spectrum disorder were experiencing transitions into and out of adolescence. A Constructivist Grounded Theory methodology was implemented in this study. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 78 mothers who had children between the ages of 12 and 22. Mothers' experiences were influenced by several factors, arranged in four core categories: parent stressors (67%), services (4%), professionals (24%), and parent solutions (5%). The constructivist grounded theory process culminated with the Parents' Perceptions Theory (PPT) emerging from the data. The PPT theory explains that maternal stress is elevated when services or clinical practices are perceived to be unhelpful. Specifically, when services or practices were perceived as not addressing the needs of the parents or child from the mothers' perspectives, mothers reported higher stress. The PPT provides a new account grounded in mothers' own experiences for the observation that mothers' who actively receive services still report significant stress.In Study 2, the author sought to explore whether the PPT would also be evident in the daily accounts of parenting stress in parents of younger children with ASD (ages 3-11). Semi-structured interviews about daily parenting stress conducted with 20 parents (18 mothers; 2 fathers) were analyzed for the presence of the coding scheme and the PPT that emerged from Study 1. Three of the core categories were present in the data: Parent stressors (88%), services (2%), and professionals (10%). The Parents' Perceptions Theory was also reflected. Parents' perceptions of the usefulness of services or clinical practices were found to influence their reported stress. The application of Constructivist Grounded Theory across two samples of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder provided important insight into how the disconnect between parents' perceptions of whether services are meeting their caregiving needs and the receipt of services contributes to parenting stress. The PPT suggests that delivery of services should be informed by regular assessment of parental perceptions of whether their needs are being met in order to provide better support to these families throughout the child's lifespan.
