The book is unique in several respects. It is interdisciplinary in scope, combining philosophy, history, perceptual science, and research in a sound balance; the problems that philosophers and computer scientists are dealing with are taken up in a way that will appeal to psychologists. It is the first book to treat invariance in perception in a rigorous manner, and it solves the problem of direction finding in optic flow (the motions of objects generated by our own movement through space) by discerning what information is useful and can be relied upon. The first five chapters take up information for vision, delving into philosophical and historical issues, particularly the trustworthiness of perception, and the relation of space and projections of objects as'discussed in art and science. These chapters also cover optics, illusions, picture perception, and more particularly invariance as a term from mathematics applied to perception. Eight chapters present the author's own research, published here for the first time. These include experiments and results concerning the perception of a moving planar surface and the perception of one's direction of movement through an environment. The book concludes by discussing two centuries-old classes of perceptual theory - direct and indirect perception - and a new theory class which the author calls "directed perception." James E. There is a great deal of current interest in the use of eye movement recordings to investigate various mental processes. The common theme is that variations in eye movements indicate variations in the processing of what is being perceived, whether in reading, driving or scene perception. However, a number of problems of interpretation are now emerging, and this edited volume sets out to address these problems. The book investigates controversies concerning the variations in eye movements associated with reading ability, concerning the extent to which text is used by the guidance mechanism while reading, concerning the relationship between eye movements and the control of other body movements, the relationship between what is inspected and what is perceived, and concerning the role of visual control attention in the acquisition of complex perceptual-motor skills, in addition to the nature of the guidance mechanism itself. The origins of the volume are in discussions held at a meeting of the European Society for Cognitive Psychology (ESCOP) that was held in Wurzburg in September 1996. The discussions concerned the landing effect in reading, an effect, that if substantiated, would provide evidence of the use of parafoveal information in eye guidance, and these discussions were explored in more detail at a small meeting in Chamonix, in February 1997. Many of the contributors to this volume were present at the meeting, but the arguments were not resolved in Chamonix either. Other leaders in the field were invited to contribute to the discussion, and this volume is the product. The argument remains unresolved, but the problem is certainly clearer.

The meeting was attended by about eighty scholars, including psychologists, neurologists, physicists and other scientists, from fourteen different countries. During the symposium some fifty research papers were presented and a series of tutorial review papers were read and discussed. The research presentations have been published in a special issue of the international journal of psychonomics "Acta Psychologica" (Vol. 48, 1981). The present book is a compilation of the tutorial papers. The tutorials were arranged around early versions of the chapters now appearing in this book. The long discussions at the Veldhoven tutorial sessions resulted in extensive revisions of the texts prior to this publication. Unfortunately this led to a delay in publication, but we feel that this was justified by a greater depth of understanding which, in our opinion, has significantly increased the quality of the book. As they now stand, the chapters cover most of the issues relevant to the study of motion perception. Also they clearly reflect the intensive exchange of knowledge that took place during the symposium. As such we think that this book can be used both as an advanced text for students and scientists alike and as a comprehensive reference source.
