Book excerpt: ABSTRACT:The 2002 Farm Bill eliminated the "marketing quota" system that supported domestic peanut prices well above world levels. Since 2002, prices have dropped and planted acreage has decreased. The peanut industry must now adjust to a more market oriented and uncertain environment. In order to aid this process, the American Peanut Council initiated a survey to be conducted among buyers abroad. The survey, which targeted quality control professionals, operations managers and purchasing agents at companies that had previously purchased peanuts from the United States, was conducted in nine different countries. Fifty-seven responses were received. These responses were analyzed to determine the perceptions held by buyers of U.S. peanuts. In general, the U.S. scored favorably in areas such as quality and value and lower in areas such as price and profit margin. An econometric model was also estimated to determine the relationship between factors that may be considered important and actual buying behavior. The dependent variable tested was the percent of peanuts purchased from the U.S. Independent variables included factors such as country where respondent works, the size of the firm, factors that the company considers important and type of firm. Using the econometric model, peanut purchasing simulations were created to show the likelihood of purchasing decisions relative to the average consumer.

Book excerpt: The delivery of high quality and equitable care for both mothers and newborns is complex and requires efforts across many sectors. The United States spends more on childbirth than any other country in the world, yet outcomes are worse than other high-resource countries, and even worse for Black and Native American women. There are a variety of factors that influence childbirth, including social determinants such as income, educational levels, access to care, financing, transportation, structural racism and geographic variability in birth settings. It is important to reevaluate the United States' approach to maternal and newborn care through the lens of these factors across multiple disciplines. Birth Settings in America: Outcomes, Quality, Access, and Choice reviews and evaluates maternal and newborn care in the United States, the epidemiology of social and clinical risks in pregnancy and childbirth, birth settings research, and access to and choice of birth settings.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive overview of local food systems explores alternative definitions of local food, estimates market size and reach, describes the characteristics of local consumers and producers, and examines early indications of the economic and health impacts of local food systems. Defining ¿local¿ based on marketing arrangements, such as farmers selling directly to consumers at regional farmers¿ markets or to schools, is well recognized. Statistics suggest that local food markets account for a small, but growing, share of U.S. agricultural production. For smaller farms, direct marketing to consumers accounts for a higher percentage of their sales than for larger farms. Charts and tables.

This new edition of Agribusiness Management was written to help prepare students and managers for a successful career in this new world of food and fiber production and marketing. Agribusiness Management uses four specific approaches to help readers develop and enhance their capabilities as agribusiness managers. First, this edition of the book offers a contemporary focus that reflects the issues that agribusiness managers face both today and are likely to face tomorrow. Specifically, food sector firms and larger agribusiness firms receive more attention in this edition, reflecting their increasing importance as employers of food and agribusiness program graduates. Second, the book presents conceptual material in a pragmatic way with illustrations and examples that will help the reader understand how a specific concept works in practice. Third, the book has a decision-making emphasis, providing contemporary tools that readers will find useful when making decisions in the contemporary business environment. Finally, Agribusiness Management offers a pertinent set of discussion questions and case studies that will allow the reader to apply the material covered in real-world situations. The bottom-line on this fourth edition of Agribusiness Management: this book is contemporary, solid on the fundamentals, practical and applicable. It provides students and adult learners with an essential understanding of what it takes to be a successful agribusiness manager in today’s rapidly evolving, highly unpredictable marketplace.
