Book excerpt: The systematic scientific investigation of human perception began over 130 years ago, yet relatively little is known about how we identify complex patterns. A major reason for this is that historically, most perceptual research focused on the more basic processes involved in the detection and discrimination of simple stimuli. This work progressed in a connectionist fashion, attempting to clarify fundamental mechanisms in depth before addressing the more complex problems of pattern recognition and classification. This extensive and impressive research effort built a firm basis from which to speculate about these issues. What seemed lacking, however, was an overall characterization of the recognition problem – a broad theoretical structure to direct future research in this area. Consequently, our primary objective in this volume, originally published in 1981, was not only to review existing contributions to our understanding of classification and recognition, but to project fruitful areas and directions for future research as well. The book covers four areas: complex visual patterns; complex auditory patterns; multi-dimensional perceptual spaces; theoretical pattern recognition.

Book excerpt: This report describes the results of research in four areas: 1) the perception of complex sounds, including tonal sequences, multidimensional complex sounds, and Gaussian noise; 2) information integration; 3) multi-stage decision making; 4) studies of the relation between auditory abilities measured with speech and nonspeech stimuli. Major accomplishments during this funding period include: a) the discovery of the proportion-of-the-total-duration (PTD) principle: Each individual component of a complex sound is resolved with an accuracy that is a function of its proportion of the total duration of the sound; b) even small degrees of logarithmic frequency transposition of tonal patterns severely degrades the detectability of pattern changes in novel sequences, but not in familiar sequences; c) temporal integration of auditory information is limited by two distinct types of internal noise, one that is added at the periphery before a decision statistic is formed, and 'central', or post-decision, noise; d) the development of a theory that incorporates these limiting factors; e) the completion and publication of studies of categorical perception for speech and non-speech sounds, demonstrating that enhanced discrimination performance in the region of certain categorical boundaries does not reflect either 'hard-wired' feature detectors in the auditory nervous system, nor psychoacoustic boundaries determined by acoustic peculiarities of complex waveforms.

Our first annual report summarized research in two of these areas. This report summarizes our efforts in four other areas. The most detailed section of this report covers work on the perception of normal and whispered speech. Using the selective adaptation paradigm, this study examined the representation of stops and continuants. The results supported the existence of a simple acoustic, peripheral level of representation, and a complex acoustic, central level of representation. Three other lines of research are briefly summarized in this report. First, several experiments tested the putative role of the syllable in the disruption of perception under conditions of signal ear-alternation. The second brief report covers work on timbre perception. A trumpet - cello continuum of tokens was synthesized, and used in various speech perception paradigms. The final brief summary reports work on the perceptual restoration of musical notes. Those experiments were designed to explore possible commonalities in the use of expectations in the perception of complex auditory patterns. The data suggest that music perception does make use of expectations, and that aspects of such perception are analagous to the use of lexical and sentential information in speech.

Book excerpt: The studies summarized in this report concern auditory perceptual processes that underlie several aspects of complex pattern recognition -- whether of speech, of music, or of environmental sounds. These patterns differ from each other according to the characteristics of individual sound events and also characteristics of the pattern sequences themselves. Among the sound characteristics, we have focussed on pitch, quality and duration. we find that spectral properties of complex tones can be changed to yield changes in both apparent pitch and quality, that individuals differ with respect to relative performance on those dimensions, and that both pitch and quality or timbre can play similar grouping roles in auditory systems. Most of the experimental work has concerned timing of successive sounds in sequences. We find that at slow rates, listeners detect equally well small temporal offsets or jitters at different positions in the sequence. Increasing the frequency of one of the tones, or increasing the duration of one or two of the successive intervals produces changes in performance at or near the changes. Some of these timing effects are also manifest in the rhythmic aspects of spoken sentences.

The research pursued the information processing goal of specifying the levels of analysis that occur between the initial sensory coding of the signal, and the recognition of the phonetic sequence it conveys. Five experiments provided evidence for the existence of at least three qualitatively different levels of perceptual analysis. The data help to specify the properties of each level, including a locus (peripheral vs. central), a stimulus domain, and the mechanisms affected by repeated stimulation. The convergence across several different approaches used to determine levels of analysis supports the three-level model.

Book excerpt: Although pitch has been considered an important area of auditory research since the birth of modern acoustics in the 19th century, some of the most significant developments in our understanding of this phenomenon have occurred comparatively recently. In auditory physiology, researchers are now identifying cells in the brainstem and cortex that may be involved in the derivation of pitch. In auditory psychophysics, dramatic developments over the last few years have changed our understanding of temporal pitch mechanisms, and of the roles of resolved and unresolved harmonics. Computational modeling has provided new insights into the biological algorithms that may underlie pitch perception. Modern brain imaging techniques have suggested possible cortical locations for pitch mechanisms. This timely volume brings together the more recent findings, while emphasizing their relation to the discoveries of the past. It brings together insights from several different methodological areas: physiology, psychophysics, comparative, imaging, etc., in addressing a single scientific problem.
