As future health care providers, they have a critical role to play in the effective implementation of healthy behaviors. As such, they too must develop an understanding and awareness of one's self and the multifactorial dimensions of their lives in the assumption of roles and responsibilities that may affect health and well-being.By determining the relationship between personal and socioeconomic profile of obese nursing students and their perceived self-esteem, the study would help to examine the psychological well-being of these individuals.

This mixed methods study used an online survey to investigate senior baccalaureate nursing students’ knowledge about childhood obesity, attitudes toward, and their perceived self-efficacy in addressing childhood obesity as a health problem. Attribution value theory and social cognitive theory were used. A sample of senior BSN students (N=102) completed the survey. This study investigated whether child weight, gender, and physical activity level or parent weight influenced health promotion and attitude towards the child and parent. Student self-efficacy and educational preparation to address weight as a health problem was also investigated. Randomized multiple segment vignettes featuring a five and a 15-year old were used with open-ended questions and semantic differentials. An overweight child was more likely to elicit nutrition as a health promotion topic, X(1)=4.386, p=.037. The weight of the child was significantly related to the number of weight-related topics introduced, X(7)=29.35, p=.000. The gender of the adolescent was significantly related to the number of weight related topics, X(7)=91.201, p=.008. BSN students have more negative than positive attitudes towards overweight children and overweight mothers. Low child and adolescent activity was also associated with more negative attitudes. Students reported being confident in their abilities to work with children and families with childhood obesity. Students described varying foci of their education regarding childhood obesity including nutrition and health effects of obesity. These findings have implications for nursing education. However, more research is needed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative descriptive study was to describe self-reported weight and perceived body image changes among Practical and Associates degree nursing students enrolled in a technical/community college located in a central Minnesota (MN) urban area. The research question addressed is: What are the self-reported weight and perceived body image changes of Practical and Associate degree nursing students before and after enrollment in a technical/community college in a central MN urban area? The study utilized a visual body image rating tool and self-reported data regarding height and weight to calculate the Body Mass Index (BMI). Pender's Health Promotion Model provides the theoretical basis that frames the study and addresses the nursing implications specific to the research question. The results of the survey indicated that students had a weight and body image change when comparing weight prior to enrollment in college with current weight. The overall reported weight gain averaged 4.41 pounds. Subjects who reported themselves at the highest and lowest ends of the body image scale desired change most often.
