Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book excerpt: This current study was conducted to examine parental communication and perceived parental attitudes about sexuality with respect to gender among Turkish college students. Moreover, attitudes toward premarital sexuality with respect to gender were explored. A demographic data form, premarital sexual permissiveness scale, parental communication about sexuality scale and parental attitudes about sexuality scale were administered to 366 (217 female and 148 male) college students, aged 18 to 26. The results indicated that females held more conservative premarital sexual attitudes than males; females talked to their mothers, while males talked to their fathers more about sexuality issues. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that gender was significant on the perceived maternal attitudes about sexuality, whereas perceived paternal attitudes about sexuality were not found to be significant with respect to gender. Future research is needed to explore variables that may contribute to the differences in parental communication and perceived parental attitudes about sexuality.

This study investigated whether cultural group identification moderated the relationship between perceived parenting style and college students' interpersonal/family and academic/career functioning. Results indicated that Indian females were most likely to perceive their mothers and fathers as authoritative, followed by U.S. males and females, followed by Indian males. Indian males were most likely to perceive their mothers as authoritarian, followed by U.S. males and females, followed by Indian females. Perceived authoritative parenting was inversely associated with interpersonal and academic problems for Indian and U.S. college students, while perceived authoritarian parenting was positively associated with interpersonal and academic problems in both samples. Culture did not serve as a moderator for perceived parenting style and interpersonal or academic problems.

Book excerpt: The transition from the first to second year of college can be a challenging time for college students and one that calls for increased independence. Extensive research exists on Baumrind's four parenting styles (authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and negligent) but not in relation to independence in college. This study examined the relationship between perceived parenting styles and four factors of independence (social competence, autonomy, locus of control, and executive functioning) in a sample of college sophomores. Results showed no significant difference in independence scores among parenting style groups. Limitations of the findings may be related to reliability and/or validity of the study's measures, or use of only one construct of parenting styles. Additionally, the researcher posits that personality may play a larger role in student independence than initially hypothesized. Implications for future research are discussed.
