Self esteem is a related factor commonly discussed in the development, prevention, and treatment of body image and eating problems; prior research in the developing field of outdoor adventure suggests that participation in nature based activities results in increased self esteem. Women's nature writing also resonates with similar themes related to the transformative effects of nature. Yet a gap in the literature exists on the effects of participation in outdoor adventure activities on women's body image. the purpose of this feminist based exploratory study is to obtain information on the body image perceptions of active outdoorswomen. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected in a mail survey of 150 trip participants from Woodswomen, an internationally active women's outdoor adventure program. An original questionnaire that included demographic questions, Secord and Jourard's Body Cathexis Scale (1953), and open ended items was utilized for data collection. Eighty six women responded to the survey, representing approximately 12.2% of the organization's membership. the demographic profile reflects high educational and income levels, diversity in age and sexual orientations, and lack of ethnic diversity. Participants self defined and self rated physical attractiveness and physical effectiveness. Definitions of physical attractiveness were not consistent with those commonly depicted and dictated by media images of ultra thin fashion models. Ninety percent of participants rated themselves as at least average in physical attractiveness according to their definitions, rather than to compare themselves negatively to media ideals. Participant's self definitions for physical attractiveness centered around themes of (1) attractiveness defined according to the woman's perception of herself; (2) attractiveness defined using physical fitness; and (3) attractiveness defined according to the body's care. Implications of this, and of additional important findings, are discussed for outdoor adventure programming, body image and eating problem treatment and prevention, and further research. the study concludes with recommendations for a new definition of physical attractiveness for women, as further discourse and action on this topic is crucial for the health of women and girls.

Book excerpt: This study examined physical self-esteem in 302 college age females with special attention to the perceived physical appearance subdomain. Further investigation addressed body image and nutritional and exercise practices which contribute to perceived physical appearance and consequently physical self-esteem. Instruments used for data collection included the Physical Self-Perception Profile (PSPP), the Perceived Importance Profile (PIP), modified Body Silhouette Drawings (BSD), a Physical Activity Inventory (PAl), and a Exercise/Nutrition Trend Questionnaire. The results supported previous findings that women perceive physical appearance as the most important subdomain affecting physical self-esteem. Health and fitness related education positively affected perceived physical self-esteem and perceived importance as shown by the changes in the subscale weightings on the PSPP and PIP. Women ages 18 to 25 years viewed their current body image as being greater in size then their perceived ideal body image. Appropriate activities were chosen that would positively affect physical appearance, but a significant decrease in activity levels was confirmed for women as they age (G2 and G3, increase, t = .90, P 5 .05; G3 and G4, decrease, t = .70, P 5 .05). Women in this study engaged in unhealthy lifestyle practices that could have a negative effect on physical appearance and be detrimental to their health, consequently decreasing their physical self-esteem.

Book excerpt: Sociometer theory (Leary & Baumeister, 2000) proposes that self-esteem is an evolutionary adaptation which functions to monitor the quality and quantity of people's interpersonal relationships together with their eligibility for these, and to motivate adaptive behaviour in response to these assessments. The present work describes a series of studies designed to systematically test hypotheses concerning relationships between self-perceptions of physical attractiveness, self-esteem and relationship behaviour, derived from sociometer theory. Study 1 extended previous research by employing a novel measure of self-perceived attractiveness and showing that this significantly and positively correlated with both global and multidimensional measures of self-esteem in both women and men. Studies 2 and 3 tested the hypothesis, derived from sociometer theory, that using a social comparison manipulation of self-perceived physical attractiveness should causally affect self-esteem in women. The results of these studies did not support this hypothesis and challenged previous findings in the literature: Women exposed to images of highly attractive others did not report significantly lower subsequent levels of self-esteem than those exposed to unattractive others. Study 4 examined whether exposing women to an implicit manipulation of self-esteem would affect their subsequent self-perceptions of attractiveness. The results showed that women exposed to a negative priming condition reported significantly lower levels of self-esteem and self-perceived physical attractiveness than those in the positive condition. These results constitute the first empirical demonstration that implicit manipulations of self-esteem can exert causal effects on specific self-perceptions. Study 5 examined the previously untested prediction that self-perceptions of desirability and self-esteem would correlate with self reports of romantic relational behaviour in women. The results indicated that although self-perceptions of desirability significantly correlated with relational behaviour, self-esteem did not. These results, together with previous research in self-esteem are discussed in relation to sociometer theory, and a novel modification of the theory is proposed.
