Book excerpt: Applied sport psychology research suggests that the use of psychological skills (e.g., positive self-talk, goal-setting, relaxation) during the rehabilitation process increase recovery rates, increase adherence to rehabilitation, and decrease anxiety and stress (Heaney, 2006). Certified athletic trainers (ATCs) hold a critical role within injury rehabilitation as the primary health care professional who interacts with injured athletes. Therefore, properly trained, ATCs have been identified as the ideal professional to implement psychological skills during injury rehabilitation (Larson, Starkey, & Zaichkowsky, 1996). The purpose of this study was to explore National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I (D-I) ATCs use of psychological skills and perceptions of qualifications to implement psychological skills with athletes during rehabilitation. Results revealed that participants reported using goal-setting, communication, and time management most frequently with athletes. Results of a stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that participants confidence in their ability to effectively demonstrate psychological skills significantly predicted their use of psychological skills, along with perceptions of the effectiveness of psychological skills and previous level of training in sport psychology. Lastly, participants perceived psychologists to be the most qualified professional to implement psychological skills with injured athletes. Implications for ATCs and sport psychology professionals are education. This includes ATCs educational requirements to be more detailed and clear for athletic training students as well as education by sport psychology consultants to help other professional better understand their role in the overall sport team.

Psychology plays an important role in the lives of athletes, yet ATCs may not have the training to differentiate between normal stress in athletes and real psychological problems. The primary purpose of this study was to describe perceptions of ATCs regarding their qualifications to use psychological techniques when dealing with athletes, in addition to describing accessibility and incidence of referral to psychological services. Two hundred schools from two NCAA Divisions (I and II) were randomly selected and sent a questionnaire to be completed by a certified staff athletic trainer. The results indicated Division I schools have greater access and referrals to sport psychologists than do Division II schools. It was also evident that athletic trainers knew they need more education to properly implement certain psychological techniques when dealing with their athletes.

Book excerpt: This study was conducted using qualitative measures to determine how head coaches at NCAA Division IA schools perceive the field of sport psychology. Specifically, the following areas were addressed: (a) How do collegiate coaches perceive of the merit of the various titles used by professionals working in the area of sport and exercise psychology, (b) How do coaches perceive the field of sport psychology as a whole (i.e., the potential benefits of employing an sport psychology consultant (SPC)), and (c) What potential barriers must be overcome in order to make sport psychology more appealing and available to coaches and how might those barriers be overcome? A descriptive qualitative design was used to examine the coaches' perceptions. Fourteen coaches participated in semi-structured interviews to gain insight into how the coaching community perceives the field of sport psychology. All interviews were conducted over the phone, and the time required for the interviews ranged from 22-51 minutes (M = 34.5 minutes). Coaches' ages ranged from 38-64 years (M = 48 years) with the number of years as head coach at their respective schools ranging from 3-25 years (M = 12.29 years). Once completed, all interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed through an inductive open coding process to allow themes to emerge from the data. Four major themes emerged from the data (i.e., perceptions, desires, barriers, and hierarchy), with 10 associated subthemes that described the overall perceptions and impressions of the participants. The coaches generally had a positive view of sport psychology and the services that SPCs are able to offer. However, they often expressed the fact that, despite their own personal opinions, they felt confined by a number of barriers that prevented them from hiring an SPC. Unfortunately, sport psychology is still viewed largely as too costly of a service and, as such, falls rather low on the list of needs that coaches must consider in the execution of their duties. In an attempt to provide a better understanding of the needs of collegiate coaches, a theoretical model for understanding where sport psychology ranks with regards to other support personnel was developed.

Unfortunately this representation does not carry over into positions of high rank. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the lived experiences of female head athletic trainers in NCAA Division I IA football institutions to focus on the issues of barriers to advancement and their ability to overcome them. Using Hakims preference theory as a lens, this interpretive qualitative investigation utilized semi structured open ended interviews to learn how participants advanced in the field of athletic training to the position of head athletic trainer. The study identified family division of labor and the discrimination from the old boys club found in other studies. However it also showed low aspiration as equally strong a barrier to advancement and demonstrated how low aspiration then affects the intentionality of ones career path. The participants identified three reasons for their low aspiration. First an aversion to working in football a traditional role for many head athletic trainers second an overall dislike of the duties of head athletic trainer and third a stated reluctance to be in a leadership position. Unique to this study was the identification of personal attributes which balanced the barriers and aided the women in the advancement. All expressed a strong work ethic they received and internalized encouragement from others and finally they saw a challenge and an opportunity for personal and professional growth in the head athletic trainer position. In most cases, they began to see the position as something other than traditional, and one they could change and improve. This revisioning of the position played an integral part in their willingness to advance. Missing from the support these athletic training leaders identified was active professional mentoring. They did not benefit from formal or informal career advancement advice from supervisors or peers. With low aspirations, low intentionality, and no career mentoring, these female head athletic trainers highlight the strong need for active preparation for advancement in the profession for both men and women.

The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of an Self Determination Theory-based educational intervention in sport psychology with athletic training students (ATSs). Data were collected through observations and interviews among an experimental and control group before and after the intervention. Three themes emerged from the data: sport psychology in athletic training, AT-patient relationship, and patient autonomy. Perceptions of sport psychology in athletic training and knowledge of sport psychology emerged from the first theme. Personal relationship and professional relationship were the two categories which emerged from the second theme and providing choice and education of patient emerged from the final theme. The educational intervention using SDT with ATSs would be feasible to incorporate into existing athletic training curricula, enhances perceptions on sport psychology of ATSs, and positively influences sport psychology behaviors exhibited by ATSs in practice.

Book excerpt: Differences in perceptions of professional preparedness and factors influencing professional preparedness among entry-level athletic trainers between graduates of professional bachelor's (PB) and professional master's (PM) degree programs were investigated through a mixed-methods study design. A survey and the option for a follow-up interview was sent to a random sample of 1000 entry-level athletic trainers. After applying inclusion criteria, there was a final N of 56. There were no significant differences in perceptions of professional preparedness between PB and PM graduates in any domain of athletic training. In PB and PM program graduates, perceptions of preparedness were significantly lower in the domain of Healthcare Administration and Professional Responsibility compared to all other domains, the domain of Injury Prevention and Wellness Protection (p=.000), the domain of Examination, Assessment, and Diagnosis (p=.000), the domain of Immediate and Emergency Care (p=.000), and the domain of Therapeutic Intervention (p=.000). Clinical Education was ranked to be the most influential factor to professional preparation among PB and PM program graduates. Results call for increased focus on the domain of Healthcare Administration and Professional responsibility through didactic coursework and clinical experiences.

Book excerpt: In this study a sample of NCAA Division I (D-I) head golf coaches (n = 84) completed a web-based survey assessing their attitudes toward sport psychology (SP) services (i.e., confidence in SP consulting, personal openness, stigma tolerance, and cultural preference), willingness to utilize SP services, previous use and perceived satisfaction with SP services, and if coaches' attitudes predicted their willingness to utilize SP services. This study also explored participating coaches' self-reported leadership behaviors (i.e., democratic behavior, autocratic behavior, training and instruction, social support, positive feedback, and situational consideration). Results indicated that coaches who more frequently used and perceived more satisfaction with SP consulting services were more confidence in SP consulting, had less preference for working with a SP consultant of similar cultural background to themselves, and were more willing to utilize SP services. Results also revealed confidence in SP consulting as the largest predictor of their willingness to utilize SP services. Finally, results indicated a weak corollary relationship between coaches' use of democratic behavior and confidence in SP consulting, and moderate relationships between social support and situational consideration behaviors and personal openness. The findings of this study support previous research on coaches' attitudes toward and willingness to utilize SP services. A discussion of major findings, implications for practitioners, and suggestions for the direction of future research is provided.
