Book excerpt: “A great source of inspiration,” this cookbook is a stunning, mouthwatering homage to the unique, beloved, and healthy cuisine of Catalonia (Alice Waters, chef/owner of Chez Panisse). Once an undiscovered gem among Europe’s culinary traditions, the cuisine of Catalonia, a province of northeast Spain, has become an inspiration to some of the world’s top chefs. Catalan Cuisine is the definitive guide to authentic Catalan cooking—the book that introduced this remarkable cuisine to America, and a volume that is found today in the kitchens of some of Catalonia’s most famous chefs. Using many of the same fresh ingredients as other Mediterranean cuisines—tomato, garlic, olives, beans, pasta, fruits, and a bounty of meat and seafood—Catalan cooking combines them in unexpected and mouthwatering ways. With 200 memorable recipes that are easy to prepare and sure to amaze, plus fascinating facts about the traditions, history, and culture of Catalonia, Catalan Cuisine is required reading—or eating—for any adventurous gourmand or Spanish food aficionado. “An intelligent, superbly written, profound study of a great and fascinating cuisine.” —Paula Wolfert “Colman Andrews is one of the most important champions of Catalan cuisine. This significant book expresses a great love for our culture.” —Ferran Adrià, chef/owner of El Bulli

In this detailed history of Spain in the decades leading up to the cataclysm, Jason Garner investigates what most other books simply assume: the conflicting forces, goals, and strategies that combined to create the country's libertarian movement. Jason Garner has taught at the University of Westminster and the University of Kent. He currently lives and teaches in Patagonia, Argentina.

Book excerpt: In Spain, the five-year period following the proclamation of the Republic in April 1931 was marked by physical assaults upon the property and public ritual of the Spanish Catholic Church. These attacks were generally carried out by rural and urban anticlerical workers who were frustrated by the Republic's practical inability to tackle the Church's vast power. On July 17/18, 1936, a right-wing military rebellion divided Spain geographically, provoking the radical fragmentation of power in the territory which remained under Republican authority. The coup marked the beginning of a conflict which developed into a full-scale civil war. Anticlerical protagonists, with the reconfigured structure of political opportunities working in their favor, participated in an unprecedented wave of iconoclasm and violence against the clergy. During the first six months of the conflict, innumerable religious buildings were destroyed and almost 7,000 religious personnel were killed. To date, scholarly interpretations of these violent acts were linked to irrationality, criminality, and primitiveness. However, the reasons for these outbursts are more complex and deep-rooted: Spanish popular anticlericalism was undergoing a radical process of reconfiguration during the first three decades of the 20th century. During a period of rapid social, cultural, and political change, anticlerical acts took on new - explicitly political - meanings, becoming both a catalyst and a symptom of social change. After July 17/18, 1936, anticlerical violence became a constructive force for many of its protagonists: an instrument with which to build a new society. This book explores the motives, mentalities, and collective identities of the groups involved in anticlericalism, during the pre-war Spanish Second Republic and the Spanish Civil War. It will be is essential reading for all those interested in 20th-century Spanish history.

Book excerpt: Salvador Dalí: mad genius or cunning manipulator? That question has haunted Dalí's career. Ever since he burst upon the scene in the 1920s with his astounding draughtsmanship and surrealistic vision he has been both admired and reviled. Meryle Secrest goes behind the carefully maintained façade to reveal many hitherto unknown details of Dalí's troubled childhood, suggesting that the artist's early works are actually autobiographical to a much greater extent than has been thought. Her study examines Dalí's childhood to find the origins of his later behavior and the reason for his frantic attempts to assert his individuality. Dalí's emotional crises, his successes and failures in Europe and America, his careers as artist, designer and showman, are vividly and compelling described, as is his mysterious near-death in a 1984 fire and his final years as prisoner of his own self-made persona. -- From publisher's description.
