Book Synopsis Women with Cancer by : Barbara L. Andersen
Download or read book Women with Cancer written by Barbara L. Andersen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Woman With Cancer Deborah came to University Hospital when she was 25. She was the mainstay of a young farming family. Her husband, Merle, was now farming his family land, working hard to keep financially solvent during these difficult f;lrming days. They had four children: Carolyn, 4 months; Michael, 17 months; John, 4 years; and Susie, 5 years. There was nothing special about this woman or her circumstances; she was like every woman who had ordinary daily chores and responsibilities, people in her life about whom she cared and who cared for her, worries, goals, dreams, and her life before her. Deborah's 4-week postpartum checkup and Pap smear were normal; however, six weeks later she had heavy, irregular bleeding. To Deborah this symptom picture did not seem to fit the pattern of her other preg nancies, and so she returned to her doctor. A large lesion was found on the posterior cervix and biopsies of the tissue revealed moderately dif ferentiated adenocarcinoma of the cervix. Referral to the University Hospital 60 miles away confirmed the diagnosis. Further tumor workup, which included a pelvic ultrasound, bladder cystoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and chest x-ray, was normal, although the IVP was notable for nonvi sualization of the right ureter, thought to be secondary to an enlarged lymph node.

Book Synopsis Pulmonary Endocrine Pathology by : John R. Gosney
Download or read book Pulmonary Endocrine Pathology written by John R. Gosney and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulmonary Endocrine Pathology: Endocrine Cells and Endocrine Tumours of the Lung covers basic principles and concepts of pulmonary endocrinology and the anatomy, physiology and pathology of that part of the diffuse endocrine system which populates the pulmonary epithelium. The book provides a brief review of some basic principles of endocrinology and of the concept and nature of the diffuse endocrine system. The text describes the structure, physiology, and role in and reaction to natural disease; and experimental injury of the pulmonary component; and the morphology and content of endocrine cells in normal lungs. The development and distribution of the pulmonary endocrine system and how it alters from fetal to adult life are also reviewed. The book further tackles the physiology of the pulmonary endocrine system; the pulmonary endocrine system in diseased lungs and in experimental injury; and the endocrinology of bronchial neoplasms. The book then looks into the pathology of endocrine tumors of the lung, with particular emphasis on their morphology and differential diagnosis; serum markers of pulmonary endocrine neoplasms; and paraneoplastic manifestations of pulmonary endocrine neoplasms. Pathologists, physicians or surgeons who work in the fields of pulmonology, endocrinology or oncology will find the book useful.

Book Synopsis Phylogenesis of Immune Functions by : Gregory W. Warr
Download or read book Phylogenesis of Immune Functions written by Gregory W. Warr and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1990-11-21 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses recent advances in research regarding the evolution of specific and nonspecific defense responses in a taxonomically diverse array of species. Topics regarding invertebrates include the protective mechanisms (cellular and molecular) employed by insects, the protective roles of lectins, and the self-nonself discrimination revealed by tissue incompatibility reactions. With vertebrates, the evolution of the immunoglobulin-related superfamily of recognition molecules (including immunoglobulins and the major histocompatibility complex molecules) is examined over several chapters. Other topics reviewed include the evolution of nonimmunoglobulin mediators of defense (e.g., cytokines and eicosanoids), lymphocyte subpopulations (including effects of ambient temperature on function) and the phylogenetic emergence of natural killer cells. Phylogenesis of Immune Functions provides invaluable information for evolutionary biologists, as well as all immunologists and other researchers interested in discovering how inhabitants in our increasingly threatened biosphere protect themselves against environmental pathogens and toxins.
