Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ballad of a female motorcycle drag racer by "Peppermint Patti" is the crazy story of her life. She begins: I had as normal of childhood as everyone else. I was spoiled and spanked, praised and brow beaten. I was restless and high spirited. Chicago was a hard place to grow up in the 1960's. My dad and grandfather were all city workers. My grandfather, Patrick, was a fireman and a hero in the great Chicago Fire. I am his namesake. My granddad was William P. Sextan. He was the head of the South-side water District and ran the Crib in Lake Michigan. My dad, William A. Sexton, was a Chief Building Inspector in Chicago. He had the downtown district when he died on the job. I had a really good father. I was lucky but, it did not save me from beatings I probably deserved. I can remember having an imaginary twin sister named "Penny". Patti and Penny. Penny was the perfect child. She did everything right. She was mom and dad's favorite. On the other hand, I couldn't do anything right. I was always scolded and always in trouble. I remember hiding under the grand piano with a big stuffed animal crying my eyes out. I was 5 or 6 years old. Normal... In my teenage years I had many friends. I never hung around with one group. I had groups of friends in a dozen neighborhoods all over the city. I hung out on a lot of corners that my dad told me not to. I also attended four different High Schools, which contributed to having so many friends. I also had many enemies. I was a very tough little girl also. If they got too out of hand, I would just beat them up...this was Chicago before guns took over. It was either 'beat' or be 'beaten'. I was beat up so bad in eighth grade and I vowed it would never happen again. So, I started working out with weights in the basement with my older brother, Billy. Billy and I were very, very close. We did many things together. He was the best brother anyone could have.. I had to go to summer school at Morgan Park High School in my Junior year for English. My teacher, a Nun at Mount Assisi, said that my short story assignment could not have been written by me. It was written by me! And I had four re-writes to show her. Sister Mary Dorothy still flunked me. That's when I knew I must be a good writer. Going to summer school in a mixed neighborhood in 1965-6 was very dangerous. Besides racial tensions, whites were divided into two groups. The Socialites and the Greasers. Undoubtedly, I was a "Greaser". We hung out at the Chatter Box Restaurant, near the school. We had many fun-filled days there. This is where I met my first love, Dennis Smagac. ....and now you will need to buy the book.

At last, Finley says farewell to his journaling days, turning his attention to another goal on his bucket list. Years later, his journal is rediscovered by a new generation of church mice who are riveted to learn of St. Pete’s past. Finley Newcastle becomes a hero in the mouse world, the only mouse who has picked up a pen and written a journal about the most important place on earth: Historic St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Oswald County.

Book excerpt: Lifes Like That was born when I was having trouble getting clients at the Family Counseling Center. That is a fancy name that came from my family counseling career. I thought I needed to get some ads in the local newspaper. That led to my meeting Mr Rowe Ray, the managing editor of the San Marcos Daily Record. I simply wanted to explore possibilities but ended with an invitation to write a weekly column for the newspaper. I can honestly say I never broke my word on confidentiality; i.e., everything we talked about stayed in the Center, everything that is except the funny things. I was counseling with a game warden that told me about a lady who was losing a sheep a night to one old hungry coyote. Whenever the warden came out, she would start feeling sorry for the coyote and asked the warden not to shoot it. Finally she had five sheep left. She called the warden and once again told him she wasnt ready to have him hunt down the coyote. The warden looked at the little flock of sheep and said, Mrs. Jones, whatever you say, but weve only got five more days anyway. As you read this book there will be tears and sunshine. The good news is you dont have to sit down and read it all at once. Life Really Is Like That.

Book excerpt: Spiritual discernment is a key theme in the Scriptures. From the Garden when Adam and Eve turned away from the simplest terms of a relationship with God, to the Garden when John the Apostle wrote the book of Revelation to a distracted people anticipating eternity, discerning God has been the heart of the matter. In modern times, however, we have forgotten the basic premise of practicing a preference for God, out of which we then are invited to live for God. Instead, we have implanted strategic planning, head-to-head battling, and will-of-God knowing in its place. In The Discerning Life, Stephen A. Macchia seeks to upend the one-eyed and limited Christian understandings of spiritual discernment and invite readers and leaders to reconsider how they prioritize the care of their souls, the grace of their communities, and the mission of their lives, churches, and organizations. When we have a fuller understanding of how spiritual discernment matters to the whole of our lives, we will in turn encourage others to follow likewise and then lean fully into the mission, mandate, and message of the whole counsel of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comedian Robin Williams said that if you remember the '60s, you weren't there. This encyclopedia documents the people, places, movements, and culture of that memorable decade for those who lived it and those who came after. Encyclopedia of the Sixties: A Decade of Culture and Counterculture surveys the 1960s from January 1960 to December 1969. Nearly 500 entries cover everything from the British television cult classic The Avengers to the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement. The two-volume work also includes biographies of artists, architects, authors, statesmen, military leaders, and cinematic stars, concentrating on what each individual accomplished during the 1960s, with brief postscripts of their lives beyond the period. There was much more to the Sixties than flower power and LSD, and the entries in this encyclopedia were compiled with an eye to providing a balanced view of the decade. Thus, unlike works that emphasize only the radical and revolutionary aspects of the period to the exclusion of everything else, these volumes include the political and cultural Right, taking a more academic than nostalgic approach and helping to fill a gap in the popular understanding of the era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Biblical gift of speaking in tongues is the supernatural gift from God of speaking in a known foreign language to unbelievers without any previous knowledge or training in that language. And what is spoken in that foreign language is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The main purpose is in order that Christ and Him crucified would be preached to all nations in a language that the hearer would understand. Yet today, many wolves in sheep clothing have perverted what the true gift of speaking in tongues really is, and have replaced it with all sorts of false doctrines. This Bible study teaches verse by verse on this topic, teaching what the Bible says as compared to what the heretics of today have to say, who are deceiving Christians by telling them to pray in ecstatic utterance that was once only associated with demonic possession. And as you will see, a very dangerous doctrine is being spewed from the tongues of these false prophets.
