Book excerpt: The field of health psychology has grown dramatically in the last decade, with exciting new developments in the study of how psychological and psychosocial processes contribute to risk for and disease sequelae for a variety of medical problems. In addition, the quality and effectiveness of many of our treatments, and health promotion and disease prevention efforts, have been significantly enhanced by the contributions of health psychologists (Taylor, 1995). Unfortunately, however, much of the theo rizing in health psychology and the empirical research that derives from it continue to reflect the mainstream bias of psychology and medicine, both of which have a primary focus on white, heterosexual, middle-class American men. This bias pervades our thinking despite the demographic heterogeneity of American society (U. S. Bureau of the Census, 1992) and the substantial body of epidemiologic evidence that indicates significant group differences in health status, burden of morbidity and mortality, life expectancy, quality of life, and the risk and protective factors that con tribute to these differences in health outcomes (National Center for Health Statistics, 1994; Myers, Kagawa-Singer, Kumanyika, Lex, & M- kides, 1995). There is also substantial evidence that many of the health promotion and disease prevention efforts that have proven effective with more affluent, educated whites, on whom they were developed, may not yield comparable results when used with populations that differ by eth nicity, social class, gender, or sexual orientation (Cochran & Mays, 1991; Castro, Coe, Gutierres, & Saenz, this volume; Chesney & Nealey, this volume).

Book excerpt: This book provides a state of the art review on the care and treatment of and current scientific knowledge on gender dysphoria (GD) and disorders of sex development (DSD). The book elucidates the history, the present situation, and the newest developments and future perspectives in both research on GD and DSD and the clinical management of individuals with GD and DSD of all ages. With contributions from a selection of leading scientists and established clinicians in the field of GD and DSD, this is a unique and comprehensive book focusing on the etiology and developmental trajectories of GD and DSD regarding gender identity development, psychiatric comorbidity, classification dilemmas, ethical dilemmas in treatment, influences of societal stigmatization, and discussion of the medical and psychological implications and outcomes of treatment, and providing treatment guidelines for individuals with GD and DSD (distinct guidelines each for children, adolescents, and adults). By presenting not only an historic overview and the current state of the art, but also challenges for the future, the book aims to demonstrate the need for further research and to stimulate the development and improvement of the clinical care of individuals with GD and DSD.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Comprehensive, Systematic Evaluation of Treatment Effectiveness for Major Psychological Disorders With over 500 types of psychotherapy being practiced in the field today, navigating the maze of possible treatments can be daunting for clinicians and researchers, as well as for consumers who seek help in obtaining psychological services. Evidence-Based Psychotherapy: The State of Science and Practice offers a roadmap to identifying the most appropriate and efficacious interventions, and provides the most comprehensive review to date of treatments for psychological disorders most often encountered in clinical practice. Each chapter applies a rigorous assessment framework to evaluate psychotherapeutic interventions for a specific disorder. The authors include the reader in the evaluation scheme by describing both effective and potentially non-effective treatments. Assessments are based upon the extant research evidence regarding both clinical efficacy and support of underyling theory. Ultimately, the book seeks to inform treatment planning and enhance therapeutic outcomes. Evidence-Based Psychotherapy: The State of Science and Practice: Presents the available scientific research for evidence-based psychotherapies commonly practiced today Systematically evaluates theory and intervention efficacy based on the David and Montgomery nine-category evaluative framework Covers essential modes of treatment for major disorders, including bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD, eating disorders, alcohol use disorder, major depressive disorder, phobias, and more Includes insightful discussion of clinical practice written by leading experts Clarifies “evidence-based practice” versus “evidence-based science” and offers historical context for the development of the treatments under discussion Evidence-Based Psychotherapy: The State of Science and Practice is designed to inform treatment choices as well as strengthen critical evaluation. In doing so, it provides an invaluable resource for both researchers and clinicians.
