This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quality Peonies and Oriental Poppies, 1930 It is obviously far more difficult to determine what peonies from Europe are adapted to our conditions and will do well with us. In addition to this, the importation of these varieties is restricted and they must be grown under quarantine for a number of years. Therefore, it has been our policy, from time to time to import those varieties that appear to have merit and to grow them in our garden to enable us to decide whether or not we care to list them. Among some of the varieties which we are able to supply and which we feel worthy of introduc tion are such plants as Alice Harding, Lemoine's beautiful white, which in our estimation is destined to be considered as one of our finest peonies when it is better known. And then there are other peonies, such as Denise and Eliza, a beautiful light pink that we feel has considerable future before it, both introduced by Dessert 85 Son. Madelon is another variety of somewhat similar character. In this same class we might also include Charlot, an unusual silver-lilac which attracts a large amount of attention from visitors, Inspecteur Lavergne, a red which is different from most other reds and which we think will be very popular, Mme. Edouard Dorait, a white, and a number of others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peonies, 1930 Our Tree Peonies have all been propagated on their own roots, and will not be a disappointment to the purchaser, like some of the grafted stock coming from the Orient, which is usually offered. The latter suckers freely, and if the graft dies there will be nothing left but the wild stock on which it was grafted. The habit of the Tree Peony is such that it positively should be on its own roots and allowed to sucker as much as it pleases, as this will increase the number of flowering stems and the circumference of the clump. No attempt should be made to confine it to a single stem. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Twin written by Gerbrand Bakker and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-11-26 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When his twin brother dies in a car accident, Helmer is obliged to return to the small family farm. He resigns himself to taking over his brother's role and spending the rest of his days 'with his head under a cow'. After his old, worn-out father has been transferred upstairs, Helmer sets about furnishing the rest of the house according to his own minimal preferences. 'A double bed and a duvet', advises Ada, who lives next door, with a sly look. Then Riet appears, the woman once engaged to marry his twin. Could Riet and her son live with him for a while, on the farm?'The Twin' is an ode to the platteland, the flat and bleak Dutch countryside with its ditches and its cows and its endless grey skies. Ostensibly a novel about the countryside, as seen through the eyes of a farmer, 'the Twin' is, in the end, about the possibility or impossibility of taking life into one's own hands. It chronicles a way of life which has resisted modernity, is culturally apart, and yet riven with a kind of romantic longing. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Download or read book Healing with Poisons written by Yan Liu and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2021-06-22 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open access edition: DOI 10.6069/9780295749013 At first glance, medicine and poison might seem to be opposites. But in China’s formative era of pharmacy (200–800 CE), poisons were strategically employed as healing agents to cure everything from abdominal pain to epidemic disease. Healing with Poisons explores the ways physicians, religious figures, court officials, and laypersons used toxic substances to both relieve acute illnesses and enhance life. It illustrates how the Chinese concept of du—a word carrying a core meaning of “potency”—led practitioners to devise a variety of methods to transform dangerous poisons into effective medicines. Recounting scandals and controversies involving poisons from the Era of Division to the Tang, historian Yan Liu considers how the concept of du was central to how the people of medieval China perceived both their bodies and the body politic. He also examines the wide range of toxic minerals, plants, and animal products used in classical Chinese pharmacy, including everything from the herb aconite to the popular recreational drug Five-Stone Powder. By recovering alternative modes of understanding wellness and the body’s interaction with foreign substances, this study cautions against arbitrary classifications and exemplifies the importance of paying attention to the technical, political, and cultural conditions in which substances become truly meaningful. Healing with Poisons is freely available in an open access edition thanks to TOME (Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem) and the generous support of the University of Buffalo.
