Book excerpt: Although contemporary migration in and from Africa can be understood as a continuation of earlier forms of interregional and international migration, current processes of migration seem to have taken on a new quality. This volume argues that one of the main reasons for this is the fact that local worlds are increasingly measured against a set of possibilities whose referents are global, not local. Due to this globalization of the personal and societal horizons of possibilities in Africa and elsewhere, in many contexts migration gains an almost inevitable attraction while, at the same time, actual migration becomes increasingly restricted.Based on detailed ethnographic accounts, the contributors to this volume focus on the imaginations, expectations, and motivations that propel the pursuit of migration. Decentering the focus of much of migration studies on the receiving societies, the volume foregrounds the subjective aspect of migration and explores the impact which the imagination and practice of migration have on the sociocultural conditions of the various local settings concerned.

It can mean taking ownership of certain issues related to energy, its production, or, indeed, becoming self-sufficient, and it can apply equally to individuals, communities and buildings. While there are numerous new developments – renewable energies, smart grids and self-consumption – it is becoming difficult to know what this idea of “autonomy” covers, just as it is difficult to define “independence” and “self-sufficiency”, which are often associated with it. However, these three concepts are key to thinking about the energy system and deciding its future. Covering distinct ideas, they are often reduced to economic and productive factors. This ambiguity in their meanings is responsible for the misunderstandings, delusions and obstacles that hamper the implementation of the energy transition. This book deconstructs the common idea of autonomy in favor of a set of more operational concepts. It demonstrates that these ideas are not interchangeable but rather represent practical and constructive tools for action. The world of energy is changing, and therefore we must rethink energy autonomy.

This transfer to the field of humanities has opened a new space of reflection, a space for imagination, through the means of a creative re-reading, among others, which has given rise to new but related concepts such as “deterritorialization”. To take into account the growing importance of this extraterritoriality paradigm reassessing the idea of territory in literature, culture and languages, this book offers an interdisciplinary and plurilingual journey through four centuries, four continents and a dozen languages, from literature to new media, encompassing philosophy, history, linguistics, the press, the cinema... Notion juridique remontant au XVIIe siècle, le terme d’ex(tra)territorialité suscite depuis longtemps l’intérêt des sciences humaines et de la littérature qui, depuis le XXe siècle, n’ont pas hésité à se l’approprier pour l’élargir et le transformer. Ce transfert du qualificatif ex(tra)territorial vers les humanités a ouvert un autre espace de réflexion, un espace d’imagination, grâce notamment à une relecture créatrice, ce qui a pu donner lieu à de nouveaux concepts apparentés comme celui de « déterritorialisation ». Il devait répondre à cette question : nous savons que le territoire est au coeur d'un grand nombre des transformations des sociétés contemporaines, mais pour autant avons-nous raison de vouloir fonder les "sciences du territoire" ? Cela supposait de répondre à d'autres questions préalables : sur la confrontation aux expériences interdisciplinaires étrangères dans le domaine. Si l'on veut constituer un réseau international, encore faut-il s'assurer de l'existence d'initiatives similaires à l'étranger et du degré de compatibilité avec elles ; sur les thématiques des sciences du territoire, le GIS ayant lancé de premiers axes de travail mais devant rester ouvert à d'autres axes possibles ; sur la nature de ces "sciences du territoire" : doivent-elles être conçues comme un champ multidisciplinaire, c'est-à-dire comme un ensemble de disciplines scientifiques que l'on confronterait pour comprendre, de manière minimalement harmonisée, la dimension territoriale de leurs objets propres ? Ou doit-on aller jusqu'à considérer qu'il s'agirait d'une discipline scientifique émergente, dont il faudra alors définir les concepts, les lois et les méthodes d'analyse ? Le spectre des disciplines concernées est large, très au-delà des SHS. Car c'est dans la confrontation des SHS avec les sciences de la vie et de la terre, les sciences de santé et les sciences de l'ingénieur (modélisation, systèmes complexes...) que les enjeux théoriques et méthodologiques sont les plus grands. Par exemple, le manque d'échanges entre les physiciens ou mathématiciens qui conçoivent les modèles du changement climatique, et les SHS dédiées à l'impact territorial de ce changement climatique, se traduit par une insuffisante interaction entre les analyses globales et locales. Enfin, au-delà des disciplines scientifiques, comment les sciences du territoire devraient-elles se situer par rapport aux pratiques du développement territorial ? Ce premier ouvrage de la Collection du CIST, dirigé par Pierre Beckouche, Claude Grasland, France Guérin-Pace, Jean-Yves Moisseron, rend compte des travaux menés au sein du Collège international des sciences du territoire.
