Book Synopsis What About America′s Homeless Children? by : Paul G. Shane
Download or read book What About America′s Homeless Children? written by Paul G. Shane and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1996-09-10 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who are the homeless children in America and what do we know about them? How does their being homeless affect them and society in general? What′s being done to help them? What About America′s Homeless Children? takes a multifaceted look at the growing, disturbing problem of children (including infants) in homeless families and abandoned and runaway children in America. The author examines the social factors that create homeless situations of children and personal and educational problems that can result from it. The health risks to this population, including unsanitary living conditions, poor nutrition, physical assault, and lack of access to health care are also explored. Author Paul G. Shane brings the problems and effects of homelessness to a personal level by presenting ethnographic case studies of individual children in urban shelters, families in a shelter program, and people who "survived" a homeless youth experience. The history of programs, both governmental and nongovernmental, and government policies for homeless youth are also examined. The book concludes with recommendations for policies and programs that can prevent homelessness for children. Human service professionals and policymakers who deal with children and families as well as those in the fields of public health, policy studies, and clinical and counseling psychology will find this book a stimulating summary of research findings and implications about this vulnerable population.

Download or read book Homeless Children and Youth written by Julee H. Kryder-Coe and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his preface to this volume, Lester M. Salamon writes that "Homelessness among children and youth is too serious a problem to be ignored in our national social policy. Both for its immediate effects on those who are homeless, and for the inadequacies it reveals in our social support systems, homelessness among children and youth has truly become a national tragedy. If this book helps to bring this problem to national attention, to document its scope and consequences, and to point the way toward possible solutions, it will have amply served its purpose." Based on a conference sponsored by The Johns Hopkins University Institute for Policy Studies last year, this volume brings together some of the best research and policy analysis ever assembled on this important issue. Among the contributors are Lisa Mihaly, Marjorie J. Robertson, James D. Wright, Yvonne Rafferty, Kay Young McChesney, Chester Hartman, Michael A. Stegman, Linda A. Wolf, and Carol W. Williams. The volume covers issues from the scope of child homelessness to its broader impacts and causes and the social responses needed to copy with it. The volume focuses on two populations with differing needs and solutions: very young children (infants, pre-schoolers, and school age children) who are part of homeless families, and older young people who are homeless but on their own (pregnant teens and teen parents, runaways, and older adolescents). Central to the volume is a critical examination of the health, mental health, developmental and educational impacts produced by homelessness; causes of the problem in society, the economy, and our housing market, and the levels of existing support systems. In short, this is a comprehensive state-of-the-art examination of homelessness as it affects children, and will be greeted as such by policy-makers at all levels of government and by professionals in economics, sociology, social work, and urban studies.

This book was released on 2013-10 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide suggests strategies to help states, districts, and schools overcome barriers that keep homeless children and youth from getting the education to which they are entitled, presenting approaches for helping them achieve the same high standards expected of all children. The promising practices all come from states and districts that have placed a strong emphasis on enrolling homeless children and youth in school and helping them succeed. This study involved three states (Illinois, Oregon, and Texas) and six school districts (Baltimore County, Maryland; Buck's County, Pennsylvania; 'Chicago, Illinois; Fort Wayne, Indiana; Santa Cruz, California; and Victoria, Texas). Researchers interviewed state coordinators of homeless education by telephone and visited the six districts to gather information about their programs. This report discusses educating homeless children and youth (the challenges this study addresses and the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act); roles and responsibilities of state coordinators (e.g., raise awareness, disseminate information, and evaluate effectiveness); and promising practices from other state-level players, districts, and schools (e.g., awareness raising, immediate enrollment, transportation, and outreach). Four appendices present promising practices highlights, organizations and advocacy groups, recent publications, and questions and answers on the education of homeless children and youth.
