Book excerpt: Understanding Permian and Mesozoic contractional structures from southern California to northern Nevada requires correlation through south-central Nevada. After the Devonian-Mississippian Antler orogeny through the Permian-Triassic Sonoma orogeny and then up to the Sevier orogeny, south-central Nevada was thought to have remained tectonically inactive. However, Pennsylvanian through Jurassic age deformation is documented to the south in Death Valley and to the north. Identifying geometries, spatial relationships, and relative timing of deformations in the Timpahute Range, south-central Nevada, is an essential piece to completing the overall understanding of Nevada geology. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze deformational structures of the Timpahute Range and clarify their geometries, relative timing, regional correlation, and tectonic significance. All contraction in the Timpahute Range is constrained by Antler foreland basin units and the intrusion of the 102.9 ± 3.2 Ma Lincoln stock. New mapping at a scale of 1:12,000 documents three contractional episodes in the Timpahute Range, and cross-cutting relations from this study determine at least a relative timeline. The Tempiute Ridge Block contains a W-vergent fold that represents the earliest contractional event in the area. Next was the W-vergent Schofield Pass fault zone. The last contractional deformation formed E-vergent structures of the Central Nevada thrust belt which make up the Lincoln duplex. In collisional orogens, closely related thrust faults may join together in a fault system that includes such structures such as imbricate fans and duplexes. The Lincoln duplex, part of the Central Nevada thrust belt exposed in the Timpahute Range and southern Worthington Mountains, consists of folds and a sequence of thrust faults. New data suggest the Lincoln duplex is a variation of the hinterland dipping duplex, with out-of-sequence thrusts. Cenozoic extensional faults overprint the contractional structures. A series of NW-striking normal faults terminate at a major ENE-striking left-lateral strike-slip fault. This fault continues eastward through multiple ranges in south-central Nevada as part of the Timpahute lineament.

Book excerpt: The structural development and deposition timing of syn-tectonic basins provides critical information for understanding the evolution of mountain belts. In the western U.S., the Cordilleran orogen was constructed between the Jurassic and Paleogene (~150-50 Ma) in response to Andean-style subduction of the Farallon oceanic plate beneath the North American continental plate. Most Cordilleran crustal shortening was accommodated by thin-skinned deformation in the Sevier fold-thrust belt in western Utah. To the west of the thrust belt, a broad hinterland region existed across much of what is now Nevada and western Utah. Decades of research in the Sevier thrust belt and associated foreland basin system have yielded a solid understanding of the timing of deformation and deposition. However, many questions remain regarding the timing and magnitude of deformation and the timing and environments of syn-orogenic deposition within the hinterland region.We focus our attention to a major player in retroarc hinterland interior deformation, the central Nevada thrust belt (CNTB). It has been estimated that this thrust belt is responsible for up to ~15 km of shortening, but temporal bracketing is lacking for this important structural corridor. However, there are isolated exposures of the synorogenic of the Cretaceous Newark Canyon Formation coincident with the extent of the CNTB, which offers the opportunity to better constrain this hinterland deformation. Here, we present new detailed geologic mapping and U-Pb zircon geochronology of the four most extensive exposures of the Newark Canyon Formation which demonstrates the syntectonic deposition proximal to CNTB deformation. The detailed geologic mapping and U-Pb zircon geochronology add much-needed temporal constraints along within the Sevier hinterland. Specifically, CNTB deformation was contemporaneous with shortening in the Sevier thrust belt, which defines middle Cretaceous strain partitioning between frontal and interior components of the Cordillera. Strain partitioning may have been promoted by renewed underthrusting during a period of high-flux magmatism.

Both the Canadian and Sonoran segments have abundant porphyry copper mineralization temporally and spatially associated with the break-off magmas, which suggests a genetic link between slab failure and porphyry copper mineralization. By 53 Ma, eastwardly dipping subduction of Pacific Ocean crust was generating arc magmatism on the amalgamated Cordilleran collision zone in both the Canadian and Sonoran segments. Oceanic schists, such as the Orocopia-Pelona-Rand, were formed in the ocean basin west of Rubia and accreted during initiation of the new easterly dipping subduction zone. A major transform fault, called the Phoenix fault, connects the Sevier fold-thrust belt at the California-Nevada border with that in eastern Mexico and separates the Great Basin and Sonoran segments. It juxtaposes the Sierra-Mojave-Sonora block alongside the Transition Zone of the Colorado Plateau. Cordilleran events affected the subsequent development of western North America. For example, the structural Basin and Range Province appears to coincide with the region where exotic allochthons sit atop North American crust in both the Great Basin and Sonoran segments. Also, within the triangular Columbia embayment, large segments of Rubia appear to have escaped laterally during the Cordilleran orogeny to create a lithospheric "hole" that was later filled by basalt of the Columbia River and Modoc plateaux.
