Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of Pennsylvania In this Flora analytical keys formed by the contrasting of diagnostic characters precede the families, genera and species, and a key to the orders precedes the main body of the work. A description and a figure is cited for each species for exam ple, Man. P. 469 refers to a description on page 469 in Brit ton's Manual of the Flora of the Northern States and Canada, while 11. Pi. F. 1753 refers to a figure in Britton Brown's Illustrated Flora of the Northeastern United States, Canada and the British Possessions. Following the known geograph ical distribution of each species, is recorded its distribution within the State, outlined by counties, as it wasknown to the author. The outline map of Pennsylvania was drawn for this work by Mr. Benj. H. Smith, who has also kindly read part of the proof. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora of Northeastern Pennsylvania In accordance with the expressed wish of the late Doctor Ever'hart, as a supplement to the collection of woods and seeds of Lackawanna County, which he was making at the time he was stricken with his last illness, labeled and now on exhibition in the Museum, I presented my Herbarium of over specimens to the institution which bears its founder's name. Incorporated in the Herbarium is a practically complete collection of the Flora of this part of the state, particularly of Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties. In further carrying out the wishes of Doctor Everhart I have prepared this check list of the Flora of the above region for publication. A preliminary list of the plants in the Lackawanna and Wyoming Valleys, of which Prof. W. R. Dudley, then of Cornell University, was the author, was published under the auspices of the Lackawanna Institute of History and Science, in 1887. This volume named 769 species as reported and classified. In 1892, Professor Dudley, then connected with the Leland Stanford Uni versity of California, and Prof. Charles 0. Thurston of the Wyoming Seminary Scientific Department combined their per sonal notes, observations and collections with those of other students of local botanical research and issued a very complete catalog of The Flowering Plants and vascular Cryptogams found in and near the Lackawanna and Wyoming Valleys. This volume contained the names of 107 orders and 974 species, to which there were later addenda of 88 species, - a total of Of this number several have since been considered doubtful, while others have become exterminated through forest fires or advance of cultivated areas and are not represented in this check list. The check list herewith presented contains the names of 115 orders and species. The specimens have very largelybeen collected by myself, mounted and preserved in the Alfred Twining Herbarium in the Everhart Museum. With few exceptions every plant named in this Flora is represented in the above Herbarium. There is also in this Herbarium a col lection of Filices and fern allies, - an almost complete representa tion of the ferns of the United States, and many foreign ferns with rare and odd varieties and forms. The Orchidaceae, Liliaceae and Violaceae of the eastern half of the United States are largely represented as well as the Cyperaceae and Gramineae. The classifications of the more important genera have been veri fied by such expert authority as Prof. Charles S. Sargent, the late Dr. Thomas C. Porter, the late Dr. Thomas Morong, the late Prof. James A. Graves, and Prof. E. Brainerd. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Description of the Coal Flora of the Carboniferous Formation in Pennsylvania and Throughout the United States, Vol. 3 Like the vegetation of the present epoch, that of the Car boniferous has been modified and diversified by local cir cumstances and is therefore differently represented at dif ferent localities if separated by a considerable distance. This can easily be seen in comparing the Coal Flora of Penn sylvania and Ohio with that of Illinois, Missouri, Kansas etc. A'certain degree of relation only is recognizable be tween the plants oi strata of the same stage; but a large number of species are only locally found. The differences in the vegetation are still more marked according to the stratigraphical distribution of the measures, or between the plants found in strata of different horizons; and as new coal fields have been recently opened and coal beds worked in Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, etc at a lower stage than that of the northern basins, a mass of specimens of fossil plants, not yet known in this country, have been discovered and sent from those localities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flora Peoriana: The Vegetation in the Climate of Middle Illinois When we study the history of a country, we ought to be acquainted with its geography, its physiognomy of the landscape, its climate and the physical qualities of its people. All these things will influence the moral character of the people and only in that way, combining cause and effect, we will gain a clear view of its history. Likewise when we study the flora of a country, it is not sufficient to know the names and characteristic qualities of all the species that grow in a certain district; we ought to know the circumstances under which they grow, the topography, the climate, the nature of the soil aud the geographical distribution of each species beyond the limits of the country in question. This branch of science, known by the name of phytogeography, is a comparatively new one; it was founded in the first decennium of our century by Alexander Humboldt, when he published, in 1805, his "Essai sur la Geographie des Plantes," and in 1817, his "Prolegomena de Distributione Geographica Plantarum." Since that time many botanists, by treatises on single countries or on single groups of plants, have furnished material to more general works on the subject, f. i., Wahlenberg on the flora of Lapponia, 1812; on the vegetation and climate of Northern Switzerland, 1813; in his Flora Carpathorum, 1814. Robt. Brown, in his "General Remarks, Geographical and Systematical on the Botany of Terra Australis, 1814, etc. The first attempt to arrange the vegetation of our globe into separate geographical divisions was made by the Danish botanist Schouw, in 1822, when he published "Grundtrack til en almindelig Plantegeographie," followed in 1824 by an Atlas of twenty-two maps. He used the names of the characteristic orders for each of his divisions: For North America, three only; the most northern, from 50 N. L. northward, he called the Kingdom of Saxifrageae and Mosses; the Northern United States and Canada formed that of the Asters and Solidagines; the Southern States that of the Magnolias. The country between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Coast, the flora of which was at that time nearly unknown, he passed by. Meyen, the botanist of the Prussian expedition around the world in 1830-32, published in 1836 a general work on the Geography of Plants. The most important works on the subject are the "Geographic Botanique," by Alph. De Candolle (1855), and "Grisebach's Vegetation of the Earth," in 1872. Book excerpt: Exploring and appreciating the fascinating ecosystems of bogs and fens Peatlands--and specifically "bogs"--have long been a source of fascination for humans, and these amazing places are truly living relics of the Ice Age. More recently, bogs have come to be regarded as complex and fascinating wetland ecosystems. Peatlands of Ohio and the Southern Great Lakes Region focuses on the sphagnum peat bogs and rich fens of the lower Great Lakes states of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, southern Michigan, and the glaciated northern corners of Pennsylvania. The peatlands of today are products of the Wisconsinan Glaciation, when peatland plants originating in northern latitudes migrated southward in a wide band preceding the glacial wall of ice. After thousands of years, the glacier's retreat severely diminished the sites with the very special environmental conditions needed to sustain these ecosystems. However, in a few sites, kettlehole lakes and cold alkaline hillside seeps and springs enabled remnants of peatland vegetation to survive to this day. Guy L. Denny, with accompanying photographs by Gary Meszaros, closely examines this habitat and its special environmental constraints, the geological and climatological origins, and the flora and fauna unique to the bogs and rich fens of this region. As readers will discover as they learn about places like Cranberry Bog in Michigan or Triangle Lake in Ohio, kettlehole sphagnum peat bogs and rich fens are not only essential places to protect, but they are amazing sites to explore, discover new plants, and observe the beauty and splendor of the natural world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
