Book excerpt: It is July of 1984 & two young homosexual men are walking across a small tidal bridge in Bangor, Maine. Suddenly three teenagers stop their car, jump out & assault them. One of the victims, Charlie Howard, trying to flee, trips on a curb & falls. The trio is upon him & begins to kick & punch him. They throw him over the railing into the stream as a prank. The young man dies. The State Coroner testifies that Howard succumbed to a severe attack of asthma & water ingestion. The three teenagers are sent to the Maine Youth Center in South Portland, Maine for indeterminate sentences. PENITENCE - A TRUE STORY is about the youngest of the trio, fifteen-year-old Jim Baines, who, over a two-year period, turns his life around. Realizing the terrible crime he has committed, he becomes a spokesperson for respect & understanding & toleration towards all people. Taking almost seven years to complete, the author has put the details together using a narrative & dialogue form which reviewers have stated is a powerful book, one "which should be required reading in every Junior High School in America." Now twenty-five & leading a quiet life as a salesman, Jim Baines is a frequent speaker at Junior High Schools where he tells his youthful audiences that they must make "good choices" in life, not "bad ones," & that they have no right to judge another person no matter who or what they are. (Mr. Baines has no financial interests in the book.) To order call 207-942-4665, fax 207-945-4695, or write: Lucy Madden Associates, Publishers, P.O. Box 2335, Bangor, ME 04402-2335.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is comprised of thirteen essays that explore penitential teachings and practices from the late fifteenth to the early seventeenth centuries in Western Europe and its colonies. Together the essays reveal that in this period, penitence was an increasingly important force shaping the individual and society. Consequently, the authors argue, penitence is central to our understanding of early modern Christianity as it was taught and experienced in everyday life. From Germany to France and to the Americas, Catholics turned to traditional forms of penitence not only to save individual souls, but also to assert their confessional identity. For their part, Protestants established distinctive penitential approaches and institutions in accordance with their own understandings of sin and salvation. In thus examining the treatment of post-baptismal sin across chronological and confessional boundaries, the volume breaks new ground in the history of penance. The volume concludes with a postscript assessing the ways in which the essays enrich the current state of scholarship on penitence and encourage further research. Katharine Jackson Lualdi is an independent scholar. Anne T. Thayer is Assistant Professor of Church History at Lancaster Theological Seminary, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Book excerpt: Book 2 in the Bequin Saga. In the mysterious city of Queen Mab, the forces of light and darkness are locked in a murderous struggle for truth. The dedicated agents of the Holy Inquisition battle with their shadowy counterparts, the infamous Cognitae, to discover the encrypted identity of the enigmatic, all-powerful King in Yellow. Caught at the heart of this struggle is the pariah Alizebeth Bequin. Will she stand with the Inquisition or with the Cognitae that raised her? And if she chooses the Inquisition, will it be the wise but ruthless Ravenor or his rival, the denounced heretic Eisenhorn? Bequin must withstand an onslaught of angels, daemons, and even the monstrous warriors of the Traitor Legions, to unpick the greatest riddle of her life. The beloved characters of Eisenhorn and Ravenor return, as implaccable adversaries in a novel of esoteric mystery, macabre intrigue, and vivid action, where the revelation of true identity could mean death… or might shake the Imperium to its very foundations.
