Book excerpt: In cold regions, thermal cycles and corrosion of reinforcements are the main factors that cause deterioration in concrete structures. Per each storm event, salt is used to melt snow and ice. Ultimately, water contains aggressive substances such as chloride that penetrate the concrete. When saturated concrete experiences FT cycles, it results in internal frost damage as well as surface salt scaling. The salt solution that contains chloride ions, at normal temperature, reaches calcium hydroxide and forms calcium oxychloride which is another form of damage observed mainly in concrete joins. On the other hand, infiltration chloride ions ultimately disrupt passive film around steel reinforcement and result in corrosion of steel. A recent trend is to extend the service life of existing infrastructure beyond the designed service life. This trend serves both sustainability, using less natural resources, and carbon footprint, generating carbon in the production of new materials. Therefore, in advanced countries, preservation, repair, and restoration as much as building new structures are important. This research explores the effect of different families of penetrating sealers on the durability performance of concrete. A large variety of penetrating sealers possessing different modes of action available in the market, research is needed to quantify and compare sealer impact on concrete durability. It should be mentioned that, along with reinforced concrete structures, a large portion of this dissertation focuses on the durability of joints in concrete pavements. The dissertation includes a selection of papers investigating a variety of important aspects of concrete joint durability. The papers include: • Evaluating penetrating sealer performance, such as depth of penetration, and wettability, • Effect of sealers on the freeze- durability of concrete joints, • Effect of sealers on the potential of calcium oxychloride formation, and • Effect of sealers on chloride ion penetration and concrete surface abrasion. The investigation conducted on concrete that considers durable concrete in terms of air voids and incorporating supplementary cementitious materials along with concrete possessing durability issues, such as improper air void system concrete, concrete contains aggregate that is susceptible to D-cracking, and concrete susceptible to form expansive calcium oxychloride. The results, presented in Chapters 3-6, show that the rate and timing of sealer application substantially affect sealer performance. Most sealers reduced both water absorption and chloride ions penetration. In addition, the durability of concrete varied depending on sealer type and mode of action. All sealers almost eliminated the potential of calcium oxychloride formation.

While the vast majority of concrete pavements provide excellent long-term performance, a portion of these pavements have recently shown premature joint deterioration. Substantial interest has developed in understanding why premature joint deterioration is being observed in jointed portland cement concrete pavements (PCCP). While some have attributed this damage to insufficient air void systems, poor mixture design, or chemical reaction between the salt and the paste, it is the hypothesis of this work that a component of this damage can be attributed to fluid absorption at the joints and chemical reactions between the salt and chemistry of the matrix. This paper discusses the role of soy methyl ester - polystyrene blends (SME-PS) as a potential method to extend the service life of concrete pavements by limiting the ingress of salt solutions. The report discusses field application of the SME-PS blends for field investigation in Lafayette and Fishers. Low temperature-differential scanning calorimetry (LT-DSC) techniques identified noticeable differences between plain mortar samples and mortar treated with SME-PS. The report also discusses the development of a test to assess chloride solution ingress during temperature cycling. The aim of this work is to provide background on some aspects that can lead to joint deterioration and provide early documentation showing that sealers may help to reduce the impact of deicers on joint damage, thereby extending the life of the concrete pavement. It should be noted that these sites as well as others are still ongoing and should be monitored for long term performance. Application procedure for SME-PS should follow manufacturer's recommendation.

Book excerpt: In July 1986, the Arizona Transportation Research Center (ATRC) coordinated the installation of a joint sealant test site near Flagstaff, between mile posts 331.5 and 332.2, on the southbound lanes of Interstate 17. The original project was constructed in 1974, with 8 in. (20 cm) of portland cement concrete pavement (PCCP) over 6 in. (15 cm) of cement treated base (CTB). The test site consisted of 200 transverse joints sawed 2 in. (5 cm) deep, skewed 1:6, and spaced at a repeating sequence of 17, 15, 13, and 15 ft (5.2, 4.6, 4.0, and 4.6 m). The objective of the project was to evaluate the performance of five joint sealants: Dow Corning 888, Superseal 888, Allied Koch 9005, Crafco Roadsaver 231, and W.R. Meadows Sof-Seal. The highway sections abutting this test site were also rehabilitated and their pavement joints were sealed with Superseal 444 which, at that time, was a specified sealant in the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) standards. Field evaluations of the joint sealants were performed at nine months, one year, 1.5 years, 3 years, and 8 years after construction. The evaluations were based on: (i) sealant flexibility, (ii) length of joint with missing sealant, (iii) adhesive and cohesive failure of sealant, (iv) joint width and sealant depth, (v) joint spalling, (vi) sealant recess, (vii) Falling Weight Deflectometer testing, and (viii) slab faulting. Generally, it appeared that after about eight years of service all five sealants had exhibited comparable performance level. Clearly, all test sealants performed better than Superseal 444 which was an ADOT specified joint sealant when the test site was installed in 1986.
