Through Mary Richmond’s classical idea of social work, the book seeks to set current societal trends affecting social work into the context of a long historical line, opening spaces for the new debates within the social work discipline as well as proposing and taking some new directions in the current era of compressed modernity. From the viewpoint of social work, there still is an individual in a situation, however, the situation has profoundly changed during the past hundred years. Divided into seven chapters, topics covered include, firstly, the rethinking of Richmond’s original idea, revisiting the modernisation theories and social transformations as well as discussion on the social work theories and mandates according to the chosen classics. Secondly, the book continues with sketching the pillars of compressed modernity and rethinking the global and local relations. During the era of glocalisation, polycentrism, digitalisation and hybridisation, the previous conceptualisations of social theory have to be reconsidered. Finally, a proposal for glocal social work vision is represented by setting questions which should be taken under scrutinity. Academics, researchers, practising social workers and students of social work, as well as of social policy, administration, social law and other social sciences, will find this book to be an essential text for understanding the current societal changes, trends and tendencies. The book provides a lot of information for policymakers and citizens interested in the background knowledge for the contemporary societal situation.

Book excerpt: In the years following World War II, the concept of State Welfare did seem to be the golden mean between Marxian revolution and laissez faire evolution in the human pursuit of social justice. Western democratic states that upheld the primacy of the individual and his liberty over that of the 'State' operationalized State responsibility for welfare on the basis of social policies compatible with their socio-political and economic systems. This resulted in the coming into existence of a large number of services rendered by the State to its citizens touching all aspects of their lives, cutting through informal, intermediary institutions, and developing a direct link with it. The focus of this study is on these services in two such states, i.e., the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. Their provision and administration for ethnic minorities that form part of their national communities is dealt with in particular. The Netherlands and the United Kingdom have constitutional monarchical systems based on the sovereignty of the people. Liberalism is an underlying sociological base for their societies. Both had acquired overseas colonies which resulted in the settlement of people with ethnic origins different from their dominant group within their national communities. These factors make the two comparable. However, the ideological basis, social and economic forces and movements that led to the establishment of State welfare in the two states differ significantly. The study reveals that their particular ideological positions on State-Society relations have a significant impact on social policies adopted by them and in the modalities of their implementation. The British stand on assimilation in one dominant culture and the Dutch stand on integration with acceptance of pluralism throw up the genuine problems in the harmonization of social policy in a United Europe of the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1974, Concepts in Social Administration draws on a wide range of theoretical disciplines to examine a number of concepts which are basic to the study of the social services individually and as a whole. The topics discussed are of vital importance to students of social administration and include the relationship between welfare capitalism and the social services, the definition of need, the distribution of resources, professionalism and the structure of the social services, and the question of consumer influence and the balance of power in the provision social services. Designed especially for teachers and students of social administration, this is a lucid exploration of the philosophy and concepts which are relevant to the discipline of social administration. It offers a framework for the subject which transcends the study of individual services on which most of the literature is based.

As such, it offers an effective bridge between historical and contemporary concerns, drawing out some of the more rarely articulated premises of courses in the history of social policy and illuminating the social, political and economic dimensions of its subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, based on empirical data collected through census, interview-cum-observations including the case studies from a Bangladesh village, seeks to explore the survival characteristics of the poor. A multiple deprivations approach to poverty provides the study's conceptual framework. An uncertain as well as a very low income forced the poor day labourers, petty traders, artisans, small farmers, to adopt a variety of improvising mechanisms, viz., irregular carbohydrate diet, substandard housing and total neglect of health and education needs. Such a precarious living eroded the traditional family and kinship norms making certain categories of people particularly vulnerable. A perpetual dependence on neighbours and patrons, and alienation from the socio-political affairs of the community relegated them to a low social status. The poor, by and large, had low self-perception and aspiration, and were overwhelmingly religious and fatalistic in outlook; yet many did not resign to fate and endeavoured to take all possible measures to adust to multifarious depriving situations, thus negating the culture of poverty concept. The study outlines the policy implications at the end. An unequal social structure is identified as a basic malaise that thwarts any attempt at social development. Land and other asset redistribution is suggested as a first planned measure towards alleviation of mass poverty.
